You can host a Space Engineers dedicated server on Linux, but not with a native Linux server executable. The dedicated-server package is distributed for Windows (Steam App ID 298740), so a practical Linux deployment runs those files with Wine, usually inside Docker. A reliable setup needs persistent storage for worlds and configuration, separate network ports, a firewall and router rule, and a rollback plan for Wine, game, and mod updates.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Space Engineers servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What Linux hosting actually means
SteamDB metadata for App 298740 lists Windows as the supported operating system and exposes both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows launch executables. That means Linux administrators are using a compatibility layer rather than a native Linux server binary. Wine translates the Windows server calls; Docker packages Wine, dependencies, the server files, and your persistent data into a repeatable deployment.

This distinction matters operationally. A game update, Wine update, Mono component, or community image change can break an otherwise healthy server. Treat the Linux stack as a compatibility project: pin a known-good image or commit, keep backups outside the container, and test updates before applying them to the public instance.

Self-hosted Linux with Docker and Wine
Self-hosting gives you control over world files, mods, plugins, logs, backups, and update timing. You are also responsible for Docker, Wine, SteamCMD, firewall rules, router forwarding, public reachability, and recovery when an update fails. A current community implementation documents Ubuntu 24.04, Wine 11, Wine Mono, SteamCMD, and Docker Compose v2; its exact image layout and environment variables are project-specific.

Managed game hosting
Keen Software House identifies GTX Gaming as the official PC server host. A managed service can remove most Wine and port-forwarding work, but verify the provider’s current Linux implementation, data-center locations, mod and plugin policy, backup retention, file access, migration procedure, and pricing before committing. You trade some low-level control for less maintenance.
| Decision point | Self-hosted Linux | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Mods, plugins and files | Full filesystem and configuration control | Depends on the provider’s panel and policy |
| Maintenance | You maintain Docker, Wine, Steam files, backups and updates | Provider maintains the platform; you still manage game content |
| Public networking | You provide a public address, forwarding and firewall rules | Usually supplied by the host, subject to its network design |
| Cost predictability | Uses your hardware, power, bandwidth and administration time | Recurring hosting charge; current plans must be checked directly |
| Recovery from a bad update | Restore your own backup or pinned image | Depends on provider snapshots, backups and file access |
Prerequisites and a sensible host plan
- A supported Linux distribution. Ubuntu 24.04 is documented by one current Docker/Wine project, but other distributions may require different package and permission work.
- Docker Engine and the Docker Compose v2 plugin. Confirm both before deploying with
docker --versionanddocker compose version. - SteamCMD to obtain the official dedicated-server files. Use the official distribution path; do not download or redistribute copied game files.
- A host that can run Wine reliably. If Linux itself is virtualized, use a full virtual machine. The current Linux guide recommends KVM rather than an LXC container because Wine needs full virtualization support.
- Persistent storage outside the container for the server’s AppData, worlds, configuration, logs and mods. Container replacement must not delete these directories.
- A stable local address and, for public play, a public IPv4 or IPv6 endpoint. Carrier-grade NAT can prevent inbound connections even when router rules appear correct.
- Enough upload bandwidth for the simulation. Keen’s official networking page lists 5 Mbps as a requirement or recommendation; the page does not state a publication year, so treat it as an undated guideline rather than a modern capacity guarantee.
There is no publisher benchmark in the cited material that guarantees a particular CPU, RAM amount, or player count for Linux/Wine. World size, physics activity, scripts, mods and concurrent players can change the load dramatically. Begin with available hardware, then measure simulation speed, CPU saturation, memory pressure and disk latency under a realistic world.

Install the Windows server files legally
Keen’s dedicated-server documentation supplies the server package and identifies Steam App ID 298740. You can either obtain the current DedicatedServer.zip through that official distribution path or install the app with SteamCMD. A typical SteamCMD invocation is:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir /srv/space-engineers/steam +app_update 298740 validate +quit
Use the account and authentication method required by the official package if anonymous access is not accepted in your environment. The important checks are that SteamCMD completes without an update error, the Windows server executable exists under the chosen directory, and the files are owned by the account that will run Docker or Wine.
Keep the Steam installation separate from runtime data. Updating the game files should not overwrite worlds, settings or logs.

Create persistent storage before starting a container
A community Docker project separates a space-engineers tree into docker, data and steam directories. The names are not mandatory, but the separation is useful:
steamcontains the Windows server files downloaded by SteamCMD.datacontains AppData, world saves, server configuration, logs and downloaded mods.dockercontains the Dockerfile, Compose file and any launch scripts.
Create the directories on a filesystem that is included in your backup plan, for example:
sudo mkdir -p /srv/space-engineers/{docker,data,steam}
sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /srv/space-engineers
The exact container paths differ among projects. Read the chosen image’s Compose file and mount every path it uses for AppData, saves, configuration, logs and mods. A bind mount or named volume is useful only when it is mapped to the path the Windows process actually writes; mounting the wrong directory can produce a server that appears to work while losing its world when the container is removed.
Build or select a Wine/Docker implementation
Current community implementations are not identical. Some build an image locally and patch DLLs to solve mod-download problems; others publish a maintained Compose stack with automatic updates and optional plugin support. Review the project’s recent commits, issue tracker and documented mount points. Pin a release tag or commit digest instead of tracking an unpinned latest image on a public server.
Your Compose service should provide four things:
- The downloaded Windows server files, either baked into the image or mounted from the Steam directory.
- Wine and its required components, including Wine Mono where the project specifies it.
- Persistent mounts for AppData, worlds, configuration, logs and mods.
- A restart policy and an explicit network/port mapping for the instance.
After placing the project’s Dockerfile and Compose file in the docker directory, build and start it from there:

Do not assume that a generic Wine image has the patches required by Space Engineers. If the server starts but mods never download, compare the implementation’s documented DLL or winetricks steps rather than copying random files from another installation.
Configure the dedicated server
Use the dedicated-server configuration interface supplied by the package, or edit the generated SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg only when the selected project documents that workflow. The essential settings are:
| Setting | What to enter | Operational note |
|---|---|---|
| Listen IP | 0.0.0.0 is the documented default |
It listens on available host interfaces; restrict the bind address only when you understand the container network. |
| Port | An unused UDP game port, such as 27016 in the current community example | Only one server instance can use a given port on the same host. |
| Server name | The name players will see | Use a distinctive name if several instances share one public address. |
| World name | The selected save | Confirm that it points to the persistent save directory, not a temporary container path. |
| Steam Group ID | Optional group identifier | Use only if you intend to restrict or organize access through a Steam Group. |
| Password | Optional server password | Use a unique value and avoid placing it in publicly readable Compose files. |
The wiki reference also documents additional EOS network parameters. Keep values within the ranges tested by the game; an arbitrary value that parses successfully is not necessarily supported.
Pay attention to ports in Server settings, as a single port can only be used by one server instance.

Open the correct ports
The current Docker example uses UDP 27016 for game traffic and UDP 8766 for Steam networking. It lists TCP 8080 only when the optional remote API is enabled. Your chosen implementation may use different defaults, so treat these as the documented example rather than universal constants.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
| Traffic | Example port | Protocol | When to expose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game traffic | 27016 | UDP | Required for the example server; match the configured game port. |
| Steam networking | 8766 | UDP | Required by the example implementation. |
| Remote API | 8080 | TCP | Only if you enable the optional API; keep it private or restrict it by source address. |
Allow only the ports you use in the Linux firewall. With UFW, an example for the documented ports is:
sudo ufw allow 27016/udp
sudo ufw allow 8766/udp
sudo ufw allow 8080/tcp
Do not add the TCP rule unless the remote API is enabled and secured. Also publish the same UDP mappings in Compose and forward them from your router to the host’s fixed LAN address. For multiple instances, assign a distinct host game port to every instance and publish each mapping explicitly.
Recommended Free Tools
Start, test and expose the server in stages
- Start the container and follow its logs with
docker compose logs -f. Wait for the server process to finish loading the world rather than testing while it is still creating files. - Join from a client on the same LAN. This checks the world path, server configuration, Wine process and local firewall without involving the router or internet.
- Confirm that the intended server name, password behavior, world and mods appear in the client browser.
- Have a player connect from outside the LAN using the public address. If LAN play works but external play fails, inspect router forwarding, the host firewall, public-address assignment and possible carrier-grade NAT.
- Record the working image tag or commit, configuration files, port numbers and backup location before inviting players.
Testing locally first is important because changing mods and changing network topology at the same time makes failures difficult to isolate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Move an existing world from Windows
The official guide places Windows saves under AppDataRoamingSpaceEngineers. To migrate a world, stop the Linux server, copy the relevant save into the dedicated server’s persistent save location, then select that world in the server configuration. Preserve the directory structure and copy all files required by the world, including the configuration generated by the game.
After migration, start with the same mod set used by the original world. A missing or changed mod can make a save appear empty, fail to load or behave differently. Keep the original Windows copy untouched until the Linux instance has loaded, saved and restarted successfully.

Keep worlds and mods safe through updates
Back up before every change
- Stop the server cleanly so the world is not being written while copied.
- Archive the persistent world directory and
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. - Save a copy of the Compose file, Dockerfile or image digest used for the current deployment.
- Store at least one backup on a different disk or host.
Update in a reversible order
- Record the current image tag or commit and take a backup.
- Update the image or Steam files in a staging copy, not the live data directory.
- Start the staging server and verify that the world loads, players can connect and mods download.
- Only then schedule the live restart. Keep the previous image and backup available until the new version has survived a normal play session.
The current Docker README documents pinning an image by commit digest. Use that capability when available; an unpinned automatic update can change Wine, dependencies and game files together.
Run more than one server on one host
Each instance needs its own game port, Steam networking port when required by the implementation, world directory, configuration and logs. Duplicate the Compose service or project directory, change every host mapping, and mount a different persistent data directory. Never let two containers share a save path: a restart or scheduled update can otherwise attach the wrong world or corrupt simultaneous writes.
Give each instance a unique server name and document the port-to-world mapping. If you expose an API, protect each API endpoint separately rather than publishing one unrestricted management port for all instances.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Checks and recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Container exits immediately | Incorrect executable path, missing Wine component, permissions or a failed image build | Read the first error in docker compose logs, verify the mounted Steam directory, run the project’s documented Wine/Mono setup, and confirm the container user can write to data mounts. |
| World resets after recreation | AppData or save directory was not persisted, or the mount targets the wrong path | Stop the container, inspect where the process wrote the save, correct the bind mount, and restore the last backup. |
| Server visible on LAN but not from the internet | Missing router rule, host firewall block, wrong public address or carrier-grade NAT | Verify the configured UDP port, forwarding destination and firewall, then confirm that the ISP supplies an inbound-reachable address. |
| Players cannot connect after adding a second instance | Two services share a host port or one instance’s Steam port | Assign unique mappings and restart both services after checking the Compose file. |
| Mods fail to download | Wine/DLL incompatibility, missing write permission or a changed mod | Check the implementation’s documented patches, inspect logs, verify writable mod storage and test with a minimal mod set. |
| World loads slowly or simulation speed drops | CPU saturation, memory pressure, disk latency, heavy physics or scripts | Measure host CPU, RAM, swap and storage latency while players reproduce the load; reduce simulation complexity or move to stronger hardware. |
| Update breaks startup | Game, Wine or dependency change in an unpinned image | Revert to the recorded image digest and world backup, then test the update in staging. |
Performance and reliability monitoring
The 5 Mbps figure from Keen is a bandwidth guideline, not a player-count promise. Measure the variables that determine your actual limit:
- Simulation speed and tick consistency while the busiest areas are active.
- Per-process CPU usage and whether one core remains saturated.
- Resident memory, swap activity and container memory limits.
- Disk latency during autosaves and mod loading.
- Upload utilization and packet loss at the host’s public interface.
Keep logs outside the container and rotate them so a runaway log cannot fill the filesystem. Use Docker’s restart policy for routine crashes, but do not treat automatic restarts as a substitute for investigating repeated failures.

- Expose only the configured UDP game and Steam networking ports. Leave the optional TCP API closed unless needed.
- Restrict API access by firewall source address and use the authentication mechanism documented by the implementation.
- Run the container with the least host access practical; do not mount unrelated host directories.
- Use a strong, unique server password when the world is private.
- Keep the operating system, Docker, Wine image and Steam files updated, but stage updates and retain rollback copies.
- Check whether your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT before spending time on port forwarding. If no public endpoint is available, use a provider with a public address or a compatible tunnel only after verifying that the game’s networking works through it.
When Linux/Wine is the right choice
Linux is a good fit when you already operate Docker, want filesystem-level control, can provide a reachable network endpoint and are comfortable testing compatibility updates. It is a poor fit when you need a zero-maintenance service, cannot forward ports, or cannot maintain off-host backups. In those cases, managed hosting removes much of the platform work, while a Windows host avoids the Wine compatibility layer entirely.
The dependable pattern is straightforward: obtain App 298740 through the official channel, run it under a pinned Wine/Docker implementation, persist every data directory, assign unique ports, test locally before exposing the server, and keep a tested rollback. That approach protects the world and makes Linux hosting maintainable even though the dedicated server itself remains a Windows application.
