GigWatch is an open-source Python command-line tool that watches configured job feeds, filters listings against your criteria, remembers listings it has seen, and can alert you to new matches. You can install it and run a first scan quickly; keeping it running around the clock takes a machine that stays online or a scheduler such as cron. The project’s “five minutes” framing is not a measured setup guarantee.
What GigWatch does—and what it does not do
GigWatch is a self-hosted watcher, not a job board. It retrieves listings from configured sources, applies your filters, compares results with locally stored state, and surfaces new matches. Its README lists Remotive, We Work Remotely, RemoteOK, Jobicy, Hacker News “Who is Hiring?”, RSS/Atom feeds, and JSON endpoints as sources. Feed availability, completeness, and update frequency can vary; a scan cannot report a posting a source has not made available.

The local JSON state file records listings already seen so repeat scans are intended to avoid repeating alerts for the same entries. Output formats include text, Markdown, JSON, and HTML for commands that support formatting. These capabilities are described in the GigWatch project README.
Install it and run a first scan
The project README documents both a package install and a source-based quick start. The shortest documented package path is:

The repository also documents pipx install gigwatch-nova as an alternative package-install command. A matching DEV Community search result dated September 26, 2026 surfaced this shorter sequence: pip install gigwatch-nova, gigwatch add --source remotive --where "remote", and gigwatch scan. The article page itself was unavailable to verify, so treat that invocation as the search result’s reported quick start, not an independently confirmed setup.
If you prefer to run from source, the README’s flow is to clone the repository, initialize a starter configuration, edit the keywords, inspect matches with list, and run scan. Python availability, package installation, source changes, and configuration all affect how quickly a working scan is ready.

Keep it checking feeds instead of stopping after one scan
A one-off scan ends when that scan finishes. For repeat monitoring, choose a run mode that fits how you want to use the watcher:

These commands and examples are documented in the project README. A 15-minute poll interval describes how often GigWatch attempts to check; it does not guarantee that every source updates on that schedule or that a new job appears immediately.

For 24/7 availability, run the chosen mode on a computer that stays powered, connected, and awake, or on an always-available host such as a VPS. The README also documents Docker Compose and persistent storage for seen-state and digest data. A separate server is optional: a local computer can work if it does not sleep or lose connectivity, but a laptop that closes, suspends, or disconnects cannot keep polling.
Choose a host and run mode
- Existing computer: simplest if it is already on and reliably connected; sleep or shutdown stops monitoring.
- VPS with scheduled scans: use cron for periodic checks without a continuously running watcher process. You will need to maintain the host and schedule.
- Docker deployment: the project documents Docker Compose; preserve its persistent volume so locally remembered listings and digest data survive container restarts.
- VPS with
serve: appropriate if you want the dashboard or API reachable remotely, but it requires deliberate network access and TLS configuration.
The project documentation does not provide a provider-specific price comparison or a hardware requirement. A Raspberry Pi or other always-on home computer is a possible general hosting approach, not hardware specifically tested or recommended by GigWatch.

Configure alerts and optional ranking
GigWatch can print alerts in the console, send email through SMTP, or send messages to Slack; its README also describes a daily digest workflow. Notification credentials are read through environment variables rather than being placed directly in the configuration file. Console output avoids setting up an external notification service; email and Slack require their respective credentials and configuration.
The optional rank command scores listings against a profile. With an OpenAI-compatible endpoint configured, it can use an LLM; without a key, it can use a deterministic heuristic. Ranking is not required to scan or filter jobs, and the project documentation does not establish that its scores improve job-search outcomes.

Secure a public dashboard or feed service
By default, the documented gigwatch serve setup binds to 127.0.0.1:8765, making it local to the machine. The service provides an HTML dashboard, /api/jobs JSON, an /feed RSS endpoint, and /health. The README’s VPS example binds to 0.0.0.0 and uses a bearer token for the JSON and RSS endpoints. It also says the dashboard and health endpoint remain open, so a bearer token on those API/feed endpoints does not make every route private.
Do not expose the service directly to the public internet without understanding which endpoints are open. For a real deployment, the README recommends a TLS reverse proxy; review and configure access to each endpoint before making the service publicly reachable. See the project’s server deployment instructions.
What “24/7 in 5 minutes” really means
The tool is designed to be self-hosted and its documented quick start is short, but setup time depends on whether Python or Docker is ready, how much filter configuration you need, and whether you are adding email, Slack, a VPS, or public web access. Five minutes is not a verified duration for every installation. Likewise, 24/7 describes the availability of the host and running process, not a guarantee that sources publish continuously or that every matching listing will be found instantly.
