How to Run a Prerecorded YouTube Stream on a Headless Ubuntu Server

Send a prerecorded video from a headless Ubuntu server to YouTube Live with an encoder, a protected stream key, and remote checks in Live Control Room.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can send a prerecorded video from a headless Ubuntu server to YouTube Live by running an encoder on the server and connecting it to a stream you create in YouTube Studio. The server sends the video; YouTube Live Control Room still manages the event, stream key, preview, and live status. YouTube’s guidance covers that workflow and recommended ingest settings, but does not provide a current Ubuntu-specific FFmpeg installation procedure or command.

What you need before you start

  • A video file the encoder can read and a headless Ubuntu server with enough upload capacity to sustain the stream’s bitrate.
  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream. Eligibility depends on the account’s state; check YouTube’s current requirements in YouTube Studio.
  • An encoder installed and configured on the Ubuntu host. The official YouTube workflow describes connecting an encoder, but does not specify an Ubuntu package version, installation command, FFmpeg command line, or universal server size.
  • Remote access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room so you can check the incoming preview and manage the event without a desktop on the server.

This setup retransmits a file as a live feed; it is not an ordinary video upload. YouTube’s encoder instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. Use the event’s own details in your encoder.
  3. If you want encrypted ingest, select or retrieve the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room’s stream settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS; do not assume the default displayed URL is secure, because YouTube warns it may be ordinary RTMP.
  4. Keep the stream key private. It is the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or command example that others may copy. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.

YouTube explains stream keys and auto-start/auto-stop controls in Manage live stream settings.

Prepare the encoder on Ubuntu

Install and configure an encoder using current Ubuntu and encoder documentation. Configure it to read the prerecorded file and send the resulting feed to the event’s ingest URL with its stream key. Check that the encoder supports the protocol and codecs you choose. The YouTube sources cited here do not establish a current FFmpeg command, Ubuntu package procedure, file-loop flag, service manager configuration, or unattended-recovery recipe, so verify those details against the documentation for your chosen encoder and Ubuntu release before deploying them.

Do not embed a real key in a public script or shareable command. Use a protected configuration mechanism suitable for your deployment, restrict access to it, and avoid logging the secret. Also confirm that the source file’s audio and video are present and that the host’s network can sustain the outgoing stream.

Choose video, audio, and ingest settings

YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Select settings supported by your encoder and source media. YouTube’s bitrate table gives the following example:

Those bitrate figures are YouTube’s published recommendations; the source page does not show a publication date. They are not a guarantee of server performance or an independently measured requirement. Check the full current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. Make sure the server’s sustained upload capacity can handle the configured bitrate, with room for network variation.

Start the feed and confirm the event

  1. Start the encoder on the Ubuntu server with the correct file, event URL, key, and settings.
  2. Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room from another device and wait for the incoming preview. A headless server has no local desktop preview; use the remote control room to check the feed.
  3. For a scheduled stream, review the preview and click Go live when ready. If you have enabled auto-start in stream settings, the encoder can control that stage instead; understand the selected event settings before relying on automatic behavior.
  4. Check the channel’s watch page and, where relevant, a mobile device to verify viewers can reach the event. Monitor picture and sound during the stream.

YouTube’s guidance recommends testing, checking viewer access, and monitoring audio and video; see YouTube live streaming tips.

End the event and check its archive

End the event and stop the encoder according to the auto-stop or manual controls you chose. Confirm the event’s end state and archive in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; verify the dashboard behavior for longer streams rather than assuming they will be saved in the same way. This archive guidance is from YouTube’s encoder workflow and the source page does not show a publication date.

Troubleshooting checks

  • No incoming preview: Confirm the encoder is running, the event URL and key belong to the intended stream, and the selected ingest protocol is supported. Check the encoder’s connection output and the server’s outbound connectivity.
  • RTMPS connection fails: Verify that you copied the RTMPS endpoint from Live Control Room rather than assuming the displayed default is secure, and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS.
  • Unstable or poor-quality feed: Check that the host can sustain the configured upload bitrate. Revisit the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR setting, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current recommendations.
  • Preview appears, but the event is not live: In a scheduled workflow, wait for the preview and select Go live, unless the event’s auto-start setting is enabled and intended to handle that transition.
  • Key may have been exposed: Reset the stream key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder’s protected configuration before reconnecting.
  • Video or audio is missing: Check the source file and encoder configuration, then verify picture and sound in the Live Control Room preview before relying on the stream.
