You can send a prerecorded video to a YouTube Live event from a Windows PC without OBS by using FFmpeg. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio, copy its ingest URL and stream key, then run FFmpeg to send the file at real-time speed. Your PC, the FFmpeg process and its internet connection must stay available while the stream runs.
What you need—and what this method does
- A YouTube account with live streaming enabled.
- A video file accessible from the Windows PC.
- FFmpeg installed and available from Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- A stable upload connection for the duration of the stream.
This is an encoder-fed YouTube Live broadcast, not a normal video upload. Scheduling an event in Studio does not cause a file on your PC to play by itself: FFmpeg must send the media at showtime. YouTube’s setup is based on the event’s server URL and stream key (YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder).

If live streaming has never been enabled on your account, YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do that before the planned broadcast (YouTube Help).

- Open YouTube Studio and choose Go Live.
- Create a stream, or use the Manage tab to schedule one. Set the event’s title, visibility and other details.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key YouTube provides. Keep them with the event they belong to; the key is a credential that lets an encoder send video to your channel.
Labels and controls can change, so follow the current event dashboard. Do not reuse a remembered endpoint or substitute a key from another event.

2. Install and prepare FFmpeg on Windows
FFmpeg is a command-line encoder. Install a Windows build from a source you trust, then make sure the folder containing ffmpeg.exe is on your PATH, or run the command from that folder. In Command Prompt or PowerShell, check availability with:
ffmpeg -version
If Windows reports that ffmpeg is not recognized, use the full path to ffmpeg.exe or add its containing folder to PATH and open a new terminal.
Before the event, note the video’s full path, including its extension. In a Windows command, put quotes around paths containing spaces, for example "C:Videosevening program.mp4". File container, codecs, frame rate and audio-track presence can affect whether a particular file works; there is no universal compatibility guarantee for every file and FFmpeg build.
3. Send the file to YouTube with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -re as reading input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1). This paces file playback like a real-time source. Its protocol documentation gives this generic pattern:

For your event, substitute your actual file path and YouTube ingest destination in the format supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube supplies a server URL and key; an encoder combines them as required by its settings. Do not copy the example destination literally or assume every account receives an identical endpoint.
FFmpeg’s documentation describes the input pacing option and RTMP output, but this is not a tested, universal Windows command recipe for every source file and YouTube event (FFmpeg documentation; FFmpeg protocol documentation).

Use the exact URL and protocol shown in the event dashboard, and make sure your FFmpeg build and output method support it. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS; secure ingest also depends on the correct endpoint and connection details. Avoid editing the URL from memory (Google for Developers: RTMPS).

Keep the key private
Treat the stream key like a password: do not post it, include it in screenshots, or share a command containing it. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it using the controls in YouTube Studio and update the encoder destination.
4. Check the preview, start, and end the broadcast
- For a scheduled stream, start the FFmpeg command near the event time and watch the event’s Live Control Room for the encoder preview and status.
- When YouTube indicates the stream is ready, use the event dashboard’s controls to go live as applicable. For an immediate stream, follow the dashboard’s prompts after the encoder connects.
- Keep the PC awake, FFmpeg running and network connection available throughout the broadcast. If the process exits or the connection drops, YouTube stops receiving the file.
- At the end, stop FFmpeg’s output and end the event in Studio as applicable. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same for longer streams (YouTube Help).
A short private or unlisted rehearsal is a sensible way to check that the chosen file, destination and event behave as expected before a public broadcast. This workflow does not establish a universal set of resolution, bitrate or keyframe settings: follow YouTube’s current event guidance and the capabilities of the specific file and encoder.
5. Plan around copyright and YouTube’s live rules
Having a file ready does not give you permission to broadcast everything in it. Confirm that you own or have the necessary rights for the video, music and other material, and review YouTube’s current policies and event settings before going public. Repeated playback does not make copyrighted content yours, and a live format is not a substitute for permission. See YouTube’s live-streaming help for current setup guidance; check the policies applicable to your channel and content separately.
6. Choose between a local encoder and cloud playback

FFmpeg is not recognized
Windows cannot find ffmpeg.exe. Add the executable’s folder to PATH, reopen the terminal, or run FFmpeg using its full path.
YouTube receives no video
Check that FFmpeg is running, that you used the event’s current server URL and key, and that the event dashboard shows an encoder connection. Confirm the destination protocol is supported by your FFmpeg build.

Check the full path and extension. Put the path in quotes if it contains spaces, and verify that the file is present on the PC.

There is no sound or the video will not play
The source may lack an audio track or use a container or codec the current output path cannot handle. Inspect the file and confirm its streams and format are compatible; do not assume all MP4 files have identical media streams.
The stream stalls or disconnects
The local workflow depends on a stable PC and upload connection. Check for sleep settings, a stopped FFmpeg process, network interruption and YouTube’s event status. Reconnect using the correct event settings if needed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I schedule the video in YouTube Studio and leave my PC off?
No. Scheduling creates the event, but a local encoder still has to send the file at broadcast time. A cloud playback service can handle playback without your PC running.

No. This method sends media as an encoder-fed live event. An ordinary upload is a video post; Premiere is a separate YouTube feature and is not covered by this workflow.
