To run a nonstop Hindi devotional stream from a VPS, create a YouTube Live event, prepare a rights-cleared video loop, and send it from a Linux server to YouTube with FFmpeg. Choose a bitrate your VPS can sustain, use YouTube’s current encoder settings, and monitor both FFmpeg and YouTube Live Control Room. A VPS can keep the encoder running without your home computer, but it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted stream or an indefinitely archived replay.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that can create live streams, plus access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A Linux VPS with FFmpeg, enough storage for your media, and sustained outbound network capacity for your chosen stream settings. YouTube does not prescribe a universal VPS CPU or RAM size for this workflow; provider limits and the source media affect what is suitable.
- A video file containing the devotional program, or a set of compatible media files you can assemble into one. Check that the picture and audio play correctly before uploading them to the server.
- Permission to broadcast and archive each sound recording, composition, image, and video in the program. Devotional, traditional, publicly available, or free-to-download material is not automatically cleared for streaming.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and supports AAC or MP3 audio. The FFmpeg example below uses H.264 and AAC for a broadly compatible output.

Choose a resolution and bitrate
For H.264, YouTube’s encoder settings guidance gives these recommended and minimum bitrates. These are encoder targets, not a guarantee that a particular VPS connection can sustain them. Leave capacity for audio and network overhead, and test the actual server and route before relying on the stream.
| Output | Recommended H.264 bitrate | Minimum H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
If the VPS has variable or constrained outbound throughput, start at a lower supported resolution and bitrate rather than choosing a higher setting based only on the provider’s advertised port speed. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; four seconds is the maximum in its guidance. The command below uses a two-second GOP for 30 fps video.

Prepare the media and VPS
Check the source file
Inspect the file before deciding whether to re-encode it:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i devotional.mp4
Confirm that it has the expected video and audio streams, duration, dimensions, and frame rate. If the source already has compatible codecs and timing, stream copy can reduce server encoding work, but it will not fix incompatible media or normalize the output. Transcoding gives you control over resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate, at the cost of CPU usage. The example uses transcoding.

Install FFmpeg and place the file
On an Ubuntu or Debian VPS with the distribution package available, install FFmpeg with:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
Upload the cleared media to a stable location, such as /srv/devotional/devotional.mp4, and ensure the account running FFmpeg can read it. Package versions and availability vary by distribution; use a maintained FFmpeg build supported by your operating system.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and open the Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream and copy the server URL and stream key shown for that setup. YouTube associates the incoming encoder feed with a live broadcast; follow the event’s on-screen workflow for when to start and make the broadcast live.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
Do not paste a real key into a command you may save in shell history. The following example prompts for the key without echoing it, then builds the destination from the server URL and key. It still passes the destination to FFmpeg as a process argument, so a privileged local user may be able to inspect it while the process runs. On a multi-user server, use an access-controlled secret-management method and restrict who can inspect processes.
Start the FFmpeg loop
Set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL to the exact server URL copied from YouTube Studio. Then run this Bash example from a terminal:

-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads it at its normal playback rate. This example assumes an input with one video stream and optionally one audio stream. The 3000k video bitrate is the recommended H.264 target for 720p30 in YouTube’s guidance; adjust resolution and bitrate together if you change output settings. For 720p30, add -vf scale=-2:720 before the video codec options if the source needs resizing; check the result rather than upscaling low-resolution material unnecessarily. The 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds at 30 fps. The FLV muxer is used for the RTMP-family encoder feed.
The URL syntax may differ if YouTube Studio displays a server URL with a different path or formatting. Use the values exactly as Studio provides them; do not expose the key in the article’s command, terminal history, or shared logs.

Verify the feed and keep it monitored
- Start FFmpeg and check that it continues printing progress rather than exiting with an input, codec, or connection error.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and stream-health status. Review any warnings, then make the broadcast live using the event workflow shown in Studio.
- Monitor the VPS process, outbound network activity, audio/video continuity, and YouTube’s stream health. Test with representative audio and motion; a static image or silent file may not reveal the same issues as the actual program.
- Plan for failures. A process restart policy may restart FFmpeg after a crash, but it does not prove viewers will see an uninterrupted picture, restore a dropped YouTube connection correctly, or resolve a network problem. Check the event after any restart and confirm the feed is healthy.
Plan event duration and archives
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise that a longer continuous transmission will be saved as one uninterrupted replay. If keeping an archive matters, plan event turnover around that limit, verify the current behavior in your Live Control Room, and confirm that the resulting replay meets your needs. Do not assume that a single FFmpeg process running indefinitely also means a single replay will be archived indefinitely.
Copyright, policy, and monetization checks
- Clear the broadcast and archive rights for every composition, sound recording, and visual asset. A devotional setting does not exempt the stream from copyright rules.
- YouTube says a live stream can be terminated after a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. If you receive a notice, address the specific issue rather than repeatedly restarting the same feed.
- Do not assume that creating a live stream enables earnings. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program.
VPS costs and data transfer
Compare VPS offers by sustained outbound throughput, transfer limits and accounting policy, CPU allocation, storage, region and latency, and service terms. A headline port speed does not establish that a provider will sustain your stream continuously. There is no single monthly transfer figure that applies to every configuration: estimate it from your chosen video-plus-audio bitrate and how long you stream, then check how your host counts outbound traffic.
Transcoding consumes server CPU; stream copy can lower encoding work but requires compatible source streams and does not correct them. Test the actual file and VPS before settling on a plan. Neither a running server nor a process manager is an uptime guarantee.
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the event is available in Live Control Room, the copied server URL and key are current and paired, and the VPS can make an outbound connection. Replace the key if it may have been exposed.
- FFmpeg exits immediately: Check the input path and read permissions, inspect the source with
ffprobe, and read the first FFmpeg error. Unsupported input streams, missing codecs, and malformed URLs can prevent startup. - Stream health is poor or the picture stalls: Test sustained VPS upload capacity, not just a nominal network speed. Reduce output resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected rate, and leave headroom for audio and protocol overhead.
- The output has no sound: Confirm the input contains an audio stream. The example maps audio only when present; if no audio exists, the stream will be silent. Check the actual audio track and rights before restarting.
- The video repeats incorrectly or ends: Confirm the correct input is being read and that
-stream_loop -1appears before the input option. Verify that the media itself plays through to its intended end. - The stream stops after a VPS or network interruption: Check whether FFmpeg is still running and inspect its latest error output. Restarting the process can restore an encoder feed, but verify the YouTube event and preview afterward; a restart policy alone cannot guarantee continuity.
