How to Run a Local LLM on an Apple Silicon Mac

Run a local language model on an Apple silicon Mac with MLX-LM or llama.cpp. This guide covers setup commands, model compatibility, memory, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a language model locally on an Apple silicon Mac with a compatible inference runtime, model files, and enough shared memory for the model and its context. For a straightforward Python-based setup, use MLX-LM; for GGUF models or a command-line/API-server workflow, consider llama.cpp. Neither option has a universal model-size limit: memory needs vary with the model, context length, and other apps in use.

What you need before you start

  • An Apple silicon Mac. The MLX route requires Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later; llama.cpp also documents Apple silicon support.
  • For MLX-LM, native ARM Python 3.10 or later. An x86/i386 Python running through Rosetta is not the expected environment and can cause installation or build problems.
  • A model packaged for your selected runtime. MLX-LM supports MLX-compatible models, while the llama.cpp examples use GGUF model repositories.
  • Available unified memory for both model weights and runtime work, including the prompt’s context cache. Leave room for macOS and other applications.

MLX’s documented operating-system requirement is macOS 14 or later, and its installation guide calls for a native Python environment: MLX installation instructions. These are documented prerequisites, not a guarantee that every model will fit or run quickly on a particular Mac.

Choose a runtime that fits your workflow

Runtime Model packaging and compatibility Typical documented interface Best fit
MLX-LM MLX-compatible model and quantization variant; not every model repository works without adaptation. Python package, interactive chat CLI, or one-shot generation CLI. Readers comfortable with Python who want an Apple silicon-focused route and MLX tooling.
llama.cpp Supports multiple quantization levels; the project’s quick-start example uses a GGUF model from Hugging Face. Standalone CLI or an OpenAI-compatible API server. Readers who want a GGUF workflow or a local CLI/server interface.

Both projects document Apple silicon paths, but the available documentation here does not establish a universal speed winner. MLX-LM’s setup and commands are in its project README; llama.cpp describes Apple silicon as a first-class target and documents its CLI and server in the project README.

Run a model with MLX-LM

1. Create a native Python environment

Open Terminal in a native ARM shell and check that Python is native rather than running as x86 under Rosetta. Then create and activate a virtual environment and install the package:

MLX-LM documents installation with pip (and also provides a conda option). Using a virtual environment keeps this installation separate from other Python projects.

2. Start an interactive chat

Run the chat command:

mlx_lm.chat

For a reproducible setup, specify a model explicitly rather than relying on a default that may change. The following is the project’s documented generation pattern:

3. Treat model compatibility and trust prompts carefully

MLX-LM integrates with Hugging Face Hub and offers many MLX Community model variants, but compatibility depends on architecture, tokenizer, and packaging. Some tokenizers may request permission to run remote code. That code comes from the model repository, so inspect the repository and trust it only if you are comfortable with its contents. Do not enable remote code just to dismiss a prompt without understanding what you are allowing.

Review the model’s license and usage terms individually. A model being downloadable or compatible with a runtime does not mean its license permits every intended use.

Run a model with llama.cpp

The llama.cpp project documents Apple silicon support through ARM NEON, Accelerate, and Metal. Its current README examples use a Hugging Face GGUF model; install or build the project according to its current instructions, then use one of these documented patterns:

Estimate memory needs without relying on a magic RAM threshold

There is no dependable one-number rule that maps a Mac’s unified-memory capacity to a maximum parameter count. The practical budget includes model weights, the key/value (KV) cache for the prompt and generated context, runtime overhead, macOS, and other open applications. Quantized weights can reduce storage and weight-memory needs, but a label such as “4-bit” does not specify total runtime memory or guarantee a given context length.

  • A POWERFUL PLATFORM FOR AI — Apple silicon is designed to run demanding AI workflows like using huge LLMs, directly on device.
  • Check the exact model variant’s published size rather than estimating from parameter count alone.
  • Account for the context length you plan to use: longer prompts and context can increase cache use.
  • Close memory-heavy applications if a run is constrained, or choose a smaller or more compressed model variant.
  • Expect a model that is large relative to available RAM to be slow; MLX-LM maintainers document this limitation.

MLX-LM offers a rotating KV cache. Its documentation explains that smaller settings, such as 512, use less RAM but may reduce quality; larger settings, such as 4096 or more, use more RAM and may improve quality. For long prompts, smaller prefill steps can lower peak memory while slowing prompt processing. These are trade-offs to tune for a workload, not universal recommended values.

MLX-LM also documents a memory-wiring feature for larger runs that requires macOS 15 or later. It is an advanced optimization, not a way to make a model larger than available RAM fit; do not treat it as a routine beginner setting.

Common setup problems

Package installation or build fails

Confirm the Mac is Apple silicon, macOS meets the runtime’s requirement, and Python is native ARM rather than an x86/i386 process under Rosetta. For MLX, the documented requirement is macOS 14 or later and native Python 3.10 or later.

The model is not recognized or will not load

Check that the repository contains a format supported by the runtime and that the model architecture and tokenizer are compatible. A model for another runtime may need conversion or adaptation; not every Hub model can be loaded directly by MLX-LM.

The run is slow or runs out of memory

Reduce the context or use a smaller or more compressed compatible model. In MLX-LM, a smaller rotating cache or smaller prefill steps can lower memory pressure, with the quality or prompt-processing trade-offs described above. Model loading and generation also compete with the Mac’s other memory use.

Which route should you use?

  • Choose MLX-LM if you want an Apple silicon-oriented Python setup, chat or generation commands, and its documented memory controls.
  • Choose llama.cpp if you want to work with GGUF models or prefer a standalone CLI or local API server.
  • In either case, select the runtime first, then verify the exact model package, license, tokenizer behavior, and memory demands before committing to a long-context workload.
