How to Run a Local AI Interview Coach Without Sending Your Answers to the Cloud

Run interview practice with a local LLM and, if desired, local speech recognition and voice playback. Learn how to verify transport, endpoints, and on-device data retention.

You can rehearse interviews with an AI coach on your own computer by keeping the language model, speech recognition, optional voice playback, and any real-time transport local. A “local model” alone does not guarantee privacy: a hosted model endpoint or cloud transport can still receive your resume, job description, transcript, or spoken answers.

What a local AI interview coach needs

An interview coach is a chain of components, not just a chatbot. The language model (LLM) creates questions and feedback; speech-to-text (STT) turns spoken answers into text; optional text-to-speech (TTS) reads questions or feedback aloud. A fully local voice setup keeps each of those steps on your device, along with any service transporting audio or messages between them.

  • Text-only: type answers into a local LLM and skip microphone, transcription, and voice playback.
  • Voice: record locally, transcribe locally, send the resulting text to a local LLM, and optionally synthesize speech locally.
  • Interview context: some apps can parse a resume and job description locally to tailor the interviewer and questions. Check whether those files are processed locally before using them.

For example, Lemonade Server’s Interviewer documents an app that combines a local LLM, Whisper transcription, and Kokoro speech synthesis, then analyzes answers for feedback.

Choose a setup path

Install a purpose-built interview practice app

Lemonade Server documents an Electron desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its described workflow parses a resume and job description, creates an interviewer persona, generates behavioral and technical questions, accepts voice input through Whisper, speaks with Kokoro, and returns answer feedback. The documented setup installs the app dependencies, starts Lemonade Server, downloads the recommended LLM, Whisper-Base, and Kokoro models, and launches the app. The project recommends 32 GB of RAM for larger models and GPU acceleration for faster responses; these are project-specific recommendations, not universal minimum requirements or independent performance findings.

This path reduces the work of connecting separate components, but verify the app’s data path and storage behavior rather than assuming every feature is offline just because its models are local.

For voice, a local pipeline can capture audio, transcribe it with a local Whisper implementation, pass only the transcript to the local LLM, and optionally read the reply with local TTS. The LocalTeacher example uses Ollama for local responses, whisper.cpp for transcription, Piper for speech, and FFmpeg for recording and playback. Its documentation says a working microphone and speakers are needed for voice use; it also supports text input, so you can begin without voice hardware.

Expect a first-time setup to download model files. Local execution after installation does not mean setup itself required no network access, and you should confirm each component’s endpoint and settings.

Check hybrid apps component by component

DeepInterview documents local configurations for its LLM, STT, and TTS, but also uses LiveKit for real-time transport. Its documentation says a locally run LiveKit server is needed for a genuinely offline configuration; LiveKit Cloud makes the setup not wholly offline. It also warns that directing a compatible model endpoint to a hosted gateway sends prompts—including CV text, job descriptions, and answers—to that provider. See DeepInterview’s local-model setup.

The distinction is practical: a local model can coexist with remote transport or hosted inference. Judge the complete route taken by your data, not the label attached to one model.

Set up and verify a local workflow

  1. Choose text or voice. Start with text if you want the fewest moving parts. For voice, identify the recording, transcription, LLM, playback, and transport components before adding personal material.
  2. Install the app or local runtimes and download models. Use the setup steps documented by the selected project. Record which models and services are local, and note any component that requires an account or hosted endpoint.
  3. Set local endpoints explicitly. Check the LLM, STT, and TTS provider settings and endpoint addresses. A “local-first” description is not proof that prompts stay on-device.
  4. Try a harmless test answer with the internet disconnected. After downloads and setup, disconnect the network and try a practice session. If a feature fails, it may depend on remote transport or another online service. Passing this test shows the workflow can operate without a connection at that moment; it does not prove the app never sends data when connectivity returns.
  5. Review network and privacy settings. Check firewall activity, analytics and crash-reporting controls, and the app’s privacy settings. Do not claim that no data leaves the computer unless you have checked the full data path.
  6. Inspect local storage and cleanup. Find where the app saves transcripts, answer history, resumes, job descriptions, temporary audio, logs, caches, model files, and backups. Confirm how temporary recordings are removed and whether records remain elsewhere.

Protect the files and recordings on your computer

Keeping processing local reduces exposure to remote services, but it does not prevent other people or software with access to the device from reading retained files. LocalTeacher documents configuration and model locations and temporary WAV recordings; its documentation says temporary WAV files are cleaned up on startup and exit. That behavior is specific to the project, so check the retention policy of whichever app you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a copy of your resume or a sanitized job description for initial setup and testing.
  • Check the app’s data directory and operating-system backups if you need to delete interview material completely.
  • Do not paste a resume or confidential employer interview material into a hosted endpoint if your goal is local-only processing.
  • Keep downloaded models and logs in mind when sharing, backing up, or moving the computer; “local” data is still data you must protect.

If spoken practice is useful and you do not already have one, a working microphone is optional hardware to add; LocalTeacher’s documentation specifies the requirement but does not recommend a particular model. You can also start with text input.
