You can use a Synology NAS to send a compatible camera feed to YouTube through Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature. That is different from looping prerecorded videos: Synology documents a camera-to-YouTube workflow, not a general-purpose video playlist broadcaster. If you want a prerecorded 24/7 loop, use a dedicated encoder or cloud service instead.
Choose the right setup: camera feed or prerecorded loop
| What you want to stream | Suitable route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| A live feed from an IP camera | Synology Surveillance Station Live Broadcast | Synology documents selecting a camera and stream profile, then sending it to YouTube. Its Live Broadcast documentation specifies H.264 video. |
| A loop or playlist of prerecorded videos | A dedicated encoder or cloud streaming service | This is not the documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast workflow. YouTube’s encoder directory lists services that describe 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos, but the listing does not guarantee a provider’s uptime, pricing, or current availability. |
Before relying on a NAS for a continuous broadcast, confirm that your exact NAS model, installed Surveillance Station package and camera support the feature. Synology’s retrieved help page is version 8; its specifications page is for DSM 7.4. Neither establishes that every NAS model has the same feature or menus. Check your model and installed software before planning around Live Broadcast.

What you need for a Synology camera broadcast
- A Synology NAS and Surveillance Station installation that support Live Broadcast on your model.
- A camera available as a Live Stream Source in Surveillance Station.
- A camera stream profile using H.264. Synology says YouTube Live Broadcast supports H.264; confirm the selected profile and the NAS/package combination are compatible.
- A YouTube channel set up to create a live stream, with its server URL (RTMP path) and stream key available in YouTube Studio.
- A stable internet connection and adequate upload capacity for the selected stream. The cited Synology and YouTube setup passages do not specify universal bitrate, resolution, frame-rate or bandwidth-margin values; use the current recommendations shown in YouTube Live Control Room and monitor stream health.
Set up the camera feed in Surveillance Station
- Enable Live Broadcast. In DSM, open Application Center, enable Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast application, then open it. Menu availability may vary with the NAS model and installed package.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go Live → Stream. Create or select the stream and copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions tell users to enter these values in the encoder’s server/stream URL and stream-key fields.
- Enter the YouTube connection details in Synology. In Surveillance Station’s YouTube Settings, enter the RTMP path and corresponding stream key. Match the values to the intended YouTube stream. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in screenshots or public configuration.
- Select the camera and profile. Under Live Stream Source, choose the camera and its stream profile. Verify the profile uses H.264, the format Synology lists for Live Broadcast.
- Start broadcasting and verify it in YouTube. Switch on Live Broadcast, then check the preview and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder workflow likewise calls for starting the encoder and confirming the stream there.
Run it continuously: practical limits and checks
A NAS-based camera broadcast depends on the camera, NAS, Surveillance Station, local power, and internet connection continuing to work. Treat uninterrupted operation and recovery as operational requirements to verify for your own setup, not as guarantees established by Synology’s feature description. Check the stream status in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the feed returns after any planned restart or network interruption.
Do not assume a particular resolution, bitrate, frame rate, latency mode or upload-speed margin from the Synology feature description. Set these using the current YouTube Live Control Room guidance for your stream and the capabilities of the selected camera profile; then use YouTube’s stream health indicators to identify connection or encoding problems.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. The cited YouTube instructions do not establish the same archiving outcome for a stream longer than 12 hours, so do not count on an archive for longer broadcasts without checking current YouTube guidance.

Surveillance Station’s documented Live Broadcast flow selects a camera and a camera profile; it is not a NAS playlist feature. For a prerecorded loop, YouTube’s official encoder directory lists cloud services that describe continuous streaming of prerecorded videos. Evaluate any provider’s current availability, pricing, recovery behavior and terms directly; the directory listing itself is not a guarantee of those details.

Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube loop made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. A slot streams your upload at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price; StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video, not a camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.

Troubleshooting common problems
- Live Broadcast is missing: Check that Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast application is enabled in DSM Application Center, and verify feature availability for your exact NAS model and installed package. The documented sources do not provide a universal model-compatibility list.
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck the RTMP path/server URL and stream key against the stream selected in YouTube Studio. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the Synology setting.
- The camera or profile is unavailable: Confirm the camera is available as a Live Stream Source and that the selected profile uses H.264. Synology identifies H.264 as the supported video format for Live Broadcast.
- The stream is unstable or has poor health: Check the camera profile and local internet connection, then compare the stream settings with current YouTube Live Control Room recommendations. The cited setup documentation does not prescribe universal bitrate or bandwidth values.
- A prerecorded playlist will not play through this workflow: Live Broadcast is the camera route. Choose a dedicated encoder or a cloud service designed for prerecorded-video streaming instead.
- An ended broadcast is not archived as expected: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not establish the same outcome for longer streams.
