You can run a podcast stream on YouTube from a mini PC by sending an OBS scene to YouTube Live over RTMPS, then keeping the computer and network available. The basic chain is: prepare a verified YouTube channel, create an encoder event, configure OBS with your stream key, test the full audio-and-video setup, and monitor it while live. Treat “continuous” as an operating goal rather than a guarantee that one YouTube event will run or archive forever.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live: it must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned start. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- A mini PC that can handle your chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and OBS scene. There is no universal mini PC specification for this job; compatibility alone does not establish that a system can stream reliably.
- OBS Studio, a stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity, your podcast audio source, and a simple visual such as episode artwork or a show image.
- Permission to stream every recording, music bed, clip, and other material in the show. YouTube may restrict or remove streams that violate copyright rules. A continuous stream also does not, by itself, guarantee monetization eligibility; assess the content and rights independently.
Set up YouTube Live and create an encoder event
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. If this is your first live stream, complete any channel verification or activation steps and allow up to 24 hours for access to become available.
- Create or schedule the stream, choosing the encoder workflow. Set its title, audience, visibility, and other event details before you go live. Schedule ahead when possible so you can test the setup.
- In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key. Use these in OBS, or choose YouTube/RTMPS in OBS if the integration is available. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, show it in a screen capture, or share it with anyone who should not control the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streams. Start OBS before the planned live time, then wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room preview. Check the event and preview before selecting Go live in YouTube. YouTube’s guidance recommends setting up in advance and monitoring the stream after launch. Build a lightweight podcast scene in OBS
- Connect the audio source you intend to use, such as a mixer, audio interface, or USB microphone, and confirm that OBS receives a clean signal.
- Create a scene with the podcast audio and a simple visual: for example, the show logo, episode artwork, or a restrained waveform. A static visual is often sufficient for an audio-led program; it is an editorial choice, not a YouTube requirement.
- Keep browser sources, animated overlays, filters, and other effects to a minimum unless the show needs them. OBS sources and scene complexity use system resources, so a modest scene makes it easier to test the actual workload on a mini PC.
- Listen to the audio in OBS and check for clipping, silence, unwanted room noise, and synchronization issues. If you are looping recorded episodes, verify the playlist order, transitions, and restart behavior before relying on it live.
Configure OBS output for YouTube
Use the YouTube settings that fit the content and the upload connection. YouTube’s standard encoder guidance for SDR includes H.264 video, CBR rate control, a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds), and Rec. 709 color. For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 44.1 kHz sampling at 128 kbps. Consult the current YouTube encoder table when you configure a stream because platform guidance can change.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular mini PC or network will deliver a healthy stream. A podcast image with little motion may not need a high frame rate, but choose a supported output that the machine and connection can sustain. In OBS, set the video encoder to a supported option, set the output resolution and frame rate, and match the bitrate and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current guidance. Select the YouTube server URL and stream key, or use the integrated YouTube/RTMPS connection.

Choose and validate the mini PC
Do not buy or configure a mini PC based only on a processor label or minimum compatibility list. OBS notes: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its workload depends on encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Hardware encoding can shift work away from the CPU, but support depends on the mini PC’s platform and encoder hardware. OBS Project: System Requirements
Before treating the computer as an always-on system, run an extended test that resembles the real show. Use the intended audio source, OBS scene, output settings, network, and playlist or loop behavior. During the test, watch OBS statistics and logs for dropped frames or encoding strain, listen for audio failures, and check YouTube stream health. A short successful preview is useful, but it does not prove long-term reliability.

Make the network and day-to-day operation reliable
Upload stability matters as much as computer performance. YouTube recommends about 20% bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate and advises testing the connection and monitoring the stream. Measure upload capacity rather than relying on download speed alone. For example, a stream configured at 8 Mbps calls for roughly 9.6 Mbps of available upload capacity using that headroom guidance; other household or office traffic can reduce what is actually available. A wired Ethernet connection is a practical option for a stationary mini PC, though it is not a YouTube requirement. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Test at the time and location where the stream will run, including other devices that may use the connection.
- Check that the operating system will not unexpectedly sleep or restart during the scheduled broadcast. Plan for updates and maintenance windows.
- Confirm the audio device remains available after a reboot or reconnection, and that OBS selects the intended input.
- Decide how you will notice an outage and whether someone can respond. OBS and YouTube do not guarantee recovery from every PC, power, network, or platform failure.
- Consider a UPS as an optional continuity measure if brief power interruptions are common; it is not a YouTube requirement and cannot replace a stable connection or tested recovery plan.
What “continuous” means for YouTube duration and archives
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The reviewed platform guidance does not establish an unlimited event duration or confirm that a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived in full. If a complete archive matters, plan sessions accordingly or make a separate local recording and verify current YouTube rules before launch. Do not assume a single event can remain live indefinitely just because OBS continues sending a signal.

Common problems and fixes

DIY mini PC or cloud service?
A local mini PC running OBS gives you direct control over the scene, audio chain, and any local recording workflow, but you maintain the computer, power, network, software, and recovery process. A dedicated hardware encoder or hosted service shifts some of that setup elsewhere; compare options by who maintains the system, whether it can schedule or loop the material you need, outage handling, archive control, encoding support, and ongoing cost. YouTube supports software and hardware encoder workflows as well as cloud services, but the right fit depends on those operational needs.
