To request tagged PDF output from DocRaptor, set prince_options.profile to PDF/UA-1. That setting is only the start: use semantic, well-ordered HTML, then inspect and test the generated PDF. A successful conversion or profile selection does not by itself prove full WCAG conformance or legal compliance.
Request a tagged PDF from DocRaptor
DocRaptor’s documentation says to set prince_options[profile] to PDF/UA-1 to create a tagged document. In the JSON API request, that option is nested under prince_options:
{
"type": "pdf",
"document_content": "<html lang="en"><head><title>Accessible report</title></head><body><h1>Accessible report</h1><p>Report text.</p></body></html>",
"prince_options": {
"profile": "PDF/UA-1"
}
}
Before relying on this option, check the [DocRaptor API Reference](https://docraptor.com/documentation/api) for the pipeline applicable to your account: its reference lists PDF/UA-1 support on pipeline 7 and later. For request details, see DocRaptor’s accessible and tagged PDFs guide.
Make the request repeatable
Build the HTML as part of your normal document-generation workflow and pass it as document_content. DocRaptor disables JavaScript by default; if your source document genuinely depends on JavaScript, enable the API’s javascript option and verify the generated output rather than assuming scripts completed as intended. See DocRaptor’s HTML and JavaScript tutorial.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare accessible HTML before conversion
PDF tags are derived from the source, so start with HTML whose structure communicates the document’s meaning. The profile cannot infer relationships that the markup does not express.
- Use semantic elements and a logical heading hierarchy. Organize sections with headings in a meaningful sequence; use actual lists, quotations and tables where those structures apply. DocRaptor says Prince maps common elements such as headings and block quotes to PDF tags automatically.
- Declare the document language. Put the main language on the root
<html>element, such aslang="en", and mark a different-language phrase or section with its own language attribute where appropriate. - Write useful image alternatives. Give informative images text alternatives that convey their purpose. Treat purely decorative images as decorative so assistive technology can skip them.
- Do not make color carry meaning alone. Pair color-coded status or instructions with text or another discernible cue, and make links distinguishable by more than color.
- Use sufficient text contrast. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3 sets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large-scale text, subject to exceptions including inactive interface components, pure decoration and logos. See W3C’s explanation of Contrast (Minimum).
- Set a meaningful title. Include a descriptive HTML
<title>; DocRaptor notes that assistive devices use the document title rather than the filename. Add metadata such as author or subject when useful. - Keep source order meaningful. Arrange content in the order it should be read. CSS can move elements visually without changing the logical order used in the PDF, so check both presentation and reading sequence.
Inspect the generated PDF, not just the API response
After conversion, review the actual PDF. Automated tagging and default bookmarks can help, but complex content or layouts may need corrections; DocRaptor notes that some material, such as a table of contents, may require custom tagging.

- Review the tag tree. Check that headings, paragraphs, lists, table headers and captions, image alternatives, abbreviations, quotations, footnotes and bibliography entries have appropriate structure and are represented meaningfully.
- Check bookmarks against the outline. DocRaptor creates bookmarks from headings by default. Confirm that the resulting navigation reflects the document’s actual sections and hierarchy.
- Compare tag order with visual meaning. W3C explains that reading order is determined primarily by the order of tagged elements; complex layouts can produce an incorrect sequence. Read through the PDF with a screen reader or read-aloud tool, and test the tab order of interactive content.
- Apply custom tagging where necessary. DocRaptor documents Prince’s
-prince-pdf-tag-typeCSS property for cases such as table-of-contents tags, decorative content and ARIA roles. Usenonefor content that is genuinely decorative; do not suppress meaningful repeated content, such as page numbers. - Use a validator as one part of review. DocRaptor names CommonLook PDF Validator and PAC as checking tools, axesPDF as a checking and remediation tool, and pdfGoHTML for tag inspection. DocRaptor notes that pdfGoHTML does not itself test against standards. No single tool’s result substitutes for reviewing whether the document works for its intended readers.
W3C’s WCAG techniques are informative examples of ways to meet WCAG, not mandatory implementations. Use them to inform checks without treating a particular technique or validator as proof of conformance.
What PDF/UA-1 does—and does not—establish
Selecting PDF/UA-1 requests tagged output through DocRaptor’s generation settings. It does not, on its own, establish that every WCAG success criterion is met or that a particular legal requirement is satisfied. The source semantics, visual presentation, reading and interaction order, and the needs of the document’s users still require evaluation. DocRaptor itself cautions that additional modifications may be needed.
