First decide what “sermon loop” means for your church: a playlist that repeats for each website visitor, or a continuous live stream of prerecorded sermons that every viewer can watch at the same time. An embedded playlist is usually simpler if you only want visitors to replay sermons. For a channel-wide live broadcast, a Lightsail VPS runs an encoder that sends video to YouTube Live; YouTube then distributes it to viewers.
This guide covers both approaches, then walks through the VPS setup, YouTube configuration, reliability checks, and common failure points.

| What you need | Best-fit approach | What viewers experience | Operational work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visitors should replay existing sermons on a church webpage | YouTube embedded playlist with looping enabled | Playback starts separately for each visitor; it is not a synchronized channel broadcast. | Low: configure the YouTube player and keep the videos available on YouTube. |
| Everyone should see the same ongoing program, with a live event, notifications, or live chat | Continuous live stream sent from an encoder to YouTube Live | Viewers join the same live broadcast, subject to stream delay and interruptions. | Higher: prepare media and encoding, run and monitor a VPS process, and handle reconnection. |
These solve different problems. A live stream can offer a shared live destination, but requires an encoder and operational oversight. An embedded playlist avoids running an encoder, but each visitor controls their own playback and it does not create a live event.
Option 1: Loop sermons in an embedded YouTube player
If sermons are already uploaded to YouTube and the goal is a repeating player on your church site, start with YouTube’s share/embed workflow. The official YouTube IFrame Player API parameters explain playlist and loop controls. For a playlist, enable looping; to loop a single video, set loop=1 and include that video’s ID in the playlist parameter. Autoplay can be limited by browser policies, so treat it as an optional player setting, not a guarantee.

A Lightsail VPS is not required to make the YouTube player loop. You may need hosting for the church website itself, but the player continues to use YouTube for video delivery.
Option 2: Run a continuous live stream from Lightsail
In this design, Lightsail is cloud compute, not a physical streaming appliance: a Linux/Unix instance runs encoder software, reads a prepared video or playlist, and sends an outgoing stream to YouTube Live. YouTube’s encoder setup guide says: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Keep the key private; do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, or source control.

1. Confirm the channel can go live
Check eligibility before planning a launch. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help. Enable it well ahead of the service or event you intend to broadcast.
2. Choose and configure a Lightsail Linux instance
Select an available Linux/Unix bundle after estimating the encoder’s CPU and memory needs, the size of locally stored media and logs, and expected data transfer. AWS lists vCPU, memory, storage, and data allowance by bundle in its Lightsail pricing and bundle table. There is no universal minimum established for every sermon file and encoding configuration; test the actual workload before relying on a particular size. Plan prices and allowances can change, so check the current table for your region and plan before purchase.

Attach a static IPv4 address if a stable address or DNS record matters. AWS notes that the default public IPv4 changes when you stop and restart an instance, while an attached static IP remains stable; see Lightsail static IP documentation.
3. Limit inbound access
Use the Lightsail firewall to allow only inbound traffic the design needs. SSH is for administration; HTTP/HTTPS is needed only if the VPS also hosts the church website. A process sending video out to YouTube does not by itself require an inbound streaming port: AWS allows outbound traffic, while firewall rules govern inbound connections. Configure IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules separately. See AWS Lightsail firewall documentation.

4. Prepare the stream and encoder
- Prepare media you have the right to broadcast. Make a playlist or other repeatable source from the prerecorded sermons. Confirm the church has permission to rebroadcast each sermon and all music or other material it contains. YouTube’s copyright and monetization outcomes are not guaranteed by the act of looping a video.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s live-stream workflow and obtain the server URL and stream key for the chosen stream.
- Install and configure an encoder appropriate to the media and instance. Enter the YouTube server URL and key, and set the source, output quality, and repeat behavior. The sources here do not establish a particular encoder, command, maintenance status, or universal CPU requirement, so validate those choices with the actual files and selected bundle before going live.
- Protect the key. Store it where only the service account and authorized administrators can access it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Start the encoder, then complete YouTube’s launch step. Confirm the stream appears in Live Control Room and start the event when YouTube indicates it is ready.
5. Test continuity before depending on it
Run a rehearsal long enough to observe the encoder, outbound connection, YouTube Live Control Room, and viewer playback. Check that the sermon sequence repeats as intended, audio remains usable, and the stream recovers after a controlled encoder restart or network interruption. Assign someone to check alerts and the broadcast; a cloud instance does not remove the need for monitoring.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, as described in its live-stream archive guidance. Do not treat that limit as a promise that one event can run uninterrupted indefinitely. Plan for maintenance and have an alternate playback option if the broadcast stops.

Reliability: backups are not stream recovery
Enable automatic snapshots for a Linux/Unix Lightsail instance if you want point-in-time machine recovery. AWS says automatic snapshots retain the seven most recent daily copies; see Lightsail automatic snapshots. A snapshot preserves instance state; it does not establish that the encoder restarts, reconnects to YouTube, or resumes a live event. Test those behaviors separately and decide who receives operational alerts.
The available documentation does not establish a specific uptime for this application or guarantee that a continuous broadcast will run indefinitely. Reliability therefore depends on the selected bundle and encoder configuration, monitoring, restart behavior, maintenance planning, and an alternate way to serve viewers.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an active stream | Live streaming is not enabled yet, the encoder has the wrong server URL/key, or the YouTube launch step is incomplete. | Verify channel eligibility and activation, recheck the stream details in Studio, start the encoder, and finish the Live Control Room launch flow. |
| The VPS is running but viewers see no video | The encoder process may have stopped, the media source may have ended, or the output may not be reaching YouTube. | Check encoder and system logs, confirm the source is available and configured to repeat, and inspect Live Control Room before restarting the process. |
| The stream fails after an instance restart | The encoder may not start automatically, may lack access to its media or key, or may not reconnect to YouTube. | Test startup and reconnection deliberately; verify permissions and configuration without exposing the key. Do not assume a snapshot handles this. |
| A website name or DNS record stops reaching the instance | The default public IPv4 may have changed after stop/start. | Attach a Lightsail static IPv4 and update DNS if needed. |
| Visitors cannot hear or watch consistently | Source file, encoder load, network transfer, or browser playback conditions may be involved. | Test the actual sermon files and output on the selected bundle; distinguish a live-stream issue from browser autoplay restrictions on an embedded player. |
| A port change does not fix outbound streaming | Inbound firewall configuration may be confused with the VPS’s outgoing connection. | Review only the inbound ports your design requires and check the encoder’s outbound connection; IPv4 and IPv6 rules are separate. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded sermons without maintaining an encoder on a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for always-on YouTube streaming: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For an always-on prerecorded sermon stream, this avoids operating a VPS encoder, though it does not remove the need to use content you have rights to broadcast. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
