Optimize client-side web performance by first finding which real-user experience is failing, then reproducing it under controlled conditions and fixing the measured cause. Track the three current Core Web Vitals—Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)—at the 75th percentile, separately for mobile and desktop. Google’s good thresholds are LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP at or below 200 milliseconds, and CLS at or below 0.1; these are population-level targets, not promises about every visitor.
Start with the user experience, not a speed trick
A page can score well in a synthetic load test and still feel slow or unstable to visitors. Conversely, a low score does not tell you which code, resource, device, or interaction needs attention. Treat optimization as a diagnosis-and-validation loop: field data identifies affected users and experiences; lab tests help reproduce and investigate the cause; field data then shows whether the fix helped.
The current Core Web Vitals cover three distinct parts of the experience:
| Metric | What it measures | Good threshold |
|---|---|---|
| LCP | How quickly the largest visible image, text block, or video renders | ≤ 2.5 seconds |
| INP | Responsiveness across a page’s user interactions | ≤ 200 milliseconds |
| CLS | Unexpected visual movement during the page’s lifetime | ≤ 0.1 |
Google evaluates these thresholds at the 75th percentile, with mobile and desktop considered separately. A site-wide average can conceal a failing template, device group, or interaction, so start with representative page types and key user paths rather than only the homepage.

Build a baseline with field data and lab tests
Use field data to find the affected experience
Field data comes from actual visits and reflects the devices, networks, pages, and interactions people use. Segment it by metric, device class, page template, and important user path where your instrumentation allows. Look for the pages or cohorts that fail a threshold and, for INP, the interactions associated with poor responsiveness. This tells you where to investigate; it does not, by itself, explain the code-level cause.
Use lab tests to reproduce and diagnose
Lab tests run under controlled conditions and are useful for comparing a change before release. Google web.dev’s Web Vitals guidance describes lab measurement as the best way to test features during development, before release. Chrome DevTools, Lighthouse, PageSpeed Insights, and WebPageTest are options named in that guidance. WebPageTest can apply chosen device and network conditions, which helps when investigating constrained mobile experiences.
Keep the two forms of evidence distinct. A Lighthouse load-only run has no user interaction and therefore cannot measure INP directly. Total Blocking Time (TBT) can help diagnose main-thread blocking in a lab, but it is a proxy, not a substitute for field INP. Likewise, an initial-load capture may miss layout shifts that occur later or after a user acts.
Run a controlled comparison
- Record the current field LCP, INP, and CLS at the 75th percentile for mobile and desktop, along with the page templates and user flows represented.
- Choose a failing metric and narrow the affected page, device cohort, or interaction using field data.
- Reproduce the relevant experience in a lab. Keep test conditions, page state, and network/device settings consistent between the baseline and changed version.
- Inspect the metric’s actual contributing resource, interaction, or layout shift before choosing an intervention.
- Compare like-for-like lab runs, then monitor field data after release. Recheck all three metrics and important flows after substantial changes.
A higher Lighthouse score alone does not establish success. A change counts as an optimization only when the relevant user experience improves in field data without creating a regression elsewhere.

Improve LCP by fixing the critical path
LCP is the render time of the largest visible image, text block, or video. The LCP candidate can change as a page loads, so inspect the final reported candidate and the resource responsible for it. LCP also includes time spent before that element renders—including connection setup, redirects, and server response—so the bottleneck may occur before image decoding or painting.
Trace the candidate and its discovery
- Identify the page’s actual LCP element rather than assuming the hero image is responsible.
- Trace when its resource is discovered, requested, downloaded, and rendered. If an important image is referenced only from CSS or JavaScript, the browser may not discover it until those resources have been fetched and processed.
- Check upstream navigation and network/server delays as well as the asset itself. Compressing an image will not resolve a delay caused by redirects or a late response.
Make critical content discoverable without creating contention
Where appropriate, expose important content in the initial HTML and ensure the visible LCP image is not lazy-loaded. Consider preloading a critical asset only when measurement shows the browser discovers it late. Preload is not a general-purpose speed switch: excessive hints compete for bandwidth, particularly on constrained connections.
Images are a common place to investigate, but not a universal answer. Google web.dev’s 2025 summary reports that 40% of sites in the Chrome UX Report do not meet the recommended good LCP threshold. The same web.dev summary reports that an image is the LCP element on 73% of mobile pages, citing the 2024 Web Almanac. These figures describe those reported datasets and years; they do not show that every page has an image bottleneck or identify a cause for any particular site.
Improve INP by finding slow interactions
INP concerns responsiveness during real interactions, not just initial page loading. Find which user actions are slow using field instrumentation or interactive browser tooling, then inspect the relevant path and main-thread work. A load-only synthetic run cannot fully describe how a menu, search, form, navigation control, or other interaction responds.

Reduce work that delays a response
Investigate long main-thread tasks and unnecessary JavaScript during startup and interaction. Work that occupies the main thread can delay the browser’s response to input. Make changes against the identified interaction rather than removing code indiscriminately, then measure that interaction again. Use TBT as supporting lab evidence about blocking, not as an INP score.
Validate the actual user path
Test the interaction with realistic page state and input, including the relevant device conditions. After deployment, check field INP for the affected cohort and verify that the change did not worsen LCP, CLS, or another important flow.
Improve CLS by reserving space and inspecting shifts
CLS captures unexpected movement, including movement caused by content appearing after the initial render. Images without reserved space can push surrounding content when they load. Provide intrinsic width and height, or otherwise reserve the correct aspect ratio, so the browser can allocate space before the image arrives. Use srcset and sizes where suitable to serve responsive image choices.
Images are only one possible cause. Fonts, inserted content, and interactions can also affect stability. Inspect actual layout shifts and when they occur; changing image compression alone will not fix a shift caused by injected content or a later interaction. Combine field data with lab inspection across the page lifecycle, because a load-only capture may not trigger user-driven or later shifts.

Make the work repeatable and weigh its costs
Use the lowest-effort test that can answer the current question, but preserve enough control to tell whether a change caused the result. A one-off DevTools inspection can help locate a cause; repeatable lab runs are better for regression checks; ongoing field data is necessary to see how real users fare after release. If a lab tool cannot generate the interaction of interest, do not infer its INP from a load-only result.
- Compare like with like: keep device, network, page state, and test procedure consistent when comparing versions.
- Optimize the bottleneck, not the score: an improvement to a non-critical asset may not move LCP, and a faster load does not establish better INP.
- Watch for trade-offs: excessive preload can compete for bandwidth; code changes can improve one flow and harm another.
- Wait for field evidence: lab results support a decision before release, while field data checks whether the expected experience actually improved.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots of a page while investigating its rendered output, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not replace Core Web Vitals field monitoring or interactive performance testing. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; for example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API. Before capture, it can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot and page-info tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Troubleshoot misleading or stubborn results
Lab LCP is good, but field LCP is poor
Check whether the lab’s device and network resemble the affected field cohort, and inspect field segmentation by template and device. Trace the real LCP candidate and include connection, redirect, and server-response time in the investigation; the asset may not be the only delay.

The LCP image seems to start late
Check whether it is hidden behind CSS or JavaScript discovery and whether it has been incorrectly lazy-loaded. If it is a critical asset that measurement shows is discovered late, consider a targeted preload; avoid preloading numerous resources.
CLS looks fine on initial load, but users report movement
Inspect field data and later page states, including interactions. Reserve space for images and investigate fonts or content inserted after load rather than relying only on an initial-load capture.
A change improves one metric but another gets worse
Recheck all three Core Web Vitals and key flows under the same conditions. Keep or revise the change based on field outcomes, not a single synthetic score.

Does a Lighthouse score tell me whether my site passes Core Web Vitals for real users?
No. Lighthouse is a controlled lab test; field data is needed to assess real-user experience at the 75th percentile.
Can I use TBT as my INP result?
No. TBT can help diagnose main-thread blocking in lab tests, but it is not interchangeable with field INP.
