Run a bulk screenshot job as asynchronous, per-URL work—not as one long HTTP request. Accept the batch, return a job ID, enqueue one task per URL, and let bounded-concurrency Playwright workers capture pages and save results to durable storage. Use Durable Functions when you need workflow state and fan-out/fan-in; keep browser work in activity functions.
Why a bulk capture should be asynchronous
Azure Functions documents a 230-second maximum for an HTTP-triggered function response, even when the configured function timeout is longer. An HTTP endpoint should validate and persist the request, create a job record, and return its identifier promptly. It should not wait for every browser navigation and screenshot to finish. See Microsoft’s Azure Functions scale and hosting documentation.

Think of a batch as many independent items with their own status. A failed URL should not erase successful captures, and a retry should not create an ambiguous second output. Store a job record, per-item outcomes, and screenshot files durably; expose progress and completed results through an authorized status or delivery path.

Choose a work-distribution pattern
Queue-triggered workers
For straightforward distribution, enqueue one message per URL (or a deliberately bounded chunk). A worker processes each task independently, records its result, and acknowledges or retries according to the queue’s delivery semantics. This keeps the producer separate from browser execution and makes it easier to limit active work.

Durable Functions fan-out and fan-in
Use Durable Functions when the application needs orchestration state, coordinated fan-out/fan-in, or workflow-level tracking. The orchestrator should schedule activity functions; browser navigation and screenshot capture belong in those activities. Durable orchestrators replay and should not perform I/O, blocking, or CPU-intensive work. Activities follow the same function timeout rules as other functions. Microsoft’s Durable Functions performance and scale guidance explains the workload placement considerations.
Decide from requirements, not URL count alone
- Choose a queue when tasks can be distributed independently and the application can own batch status aggregation.
- Choose Durable Functions when orchestration state and coordinated completion are important enough to justify that workflow model.
- Make output needs explicit: immediate access, eventual status, retention or archival, and visual-baseline comparison lead to different storage and delivery choices.
Implement the job lifecycle
- Accept and persist. Validate the batch, assign a stable job ID, and persist the input list or manifest, creation time, and initial state.
- Return promptly. Respond with the job ID and a way for the caller to check status. Do not keep the HTTP request open for the batch.
- Create stable item tasks. Each task should carry the job ID, stable item ID, target URL, and capture options. Use a stable output identity so retries can safely overwrite or recognize a prior result.
- Capture in a worker. Start the configured browser, create a context and page, navigate using an explicit readiness rule, take the screenshot, and close browser resources in a cleanup path even when an operation fails.
- Persist each outcome. Save the screenshot to durable object storage and record item state, output reference, and any failure category. Treat navigation timeouts, blocked targets, browser startup failures, and storage failures as distinct cases.
- Aggregate terminal states. Mark the batch complete when all items have reached a terminal state, including failures. Serve results through the application’s authorized delivery mechanism and apply an explicit retention policy.
- Observe and tune. Track queue age, completed and failed items, browser startup failures, duration percentiles, memory, CPU, and storage errors. Adjust worker concurrency and hosting only after measuring representative pages and batch sizes.
Capture a page with Playwright
Playwright’s Page API documents navigation and screenshot capture; its basic flow is browser, context, page, navigation, screenshot, and close. The example below is the core worker operation in Node.js, not a complete Azure Functions project. Package and install the browser runtime for the same operating system and runtime configuration used by the deployed Function App.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
async function capture(url, outputPath) {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const context = await browser.newContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 45000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: outputPath, fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
}
Choose the readiness condition deliberately. A navigation event such as domcontentloaded does not guarantee that a client-rendered page, lazy image, or data request is finished. Where the target has a known ready element, wait for that selector; where page behavior is predictable, use an explicit delay or another suitable condition. Set navigation and overall task timeouts within the function’s execution budget. See the Playwright Page API.

Set concurrency and hosting deliberately
Concurrent function executions on one instance share memory, CPU, and connections. Browsers can be resource-intensive, so do not assume a fixed number of Chromium processes per instance. Start conservatively, measure the actual workload in the intended plan and deployment, then raise concurrency only when resource headroom and failure behavior support it. Microsoft’s concurrency guidance and Functions best practices cover shared resources and application organization.
| Hosting option | Documented timeout or consideration | When to evaluate it |
|---|---|---|
| Consumption | Five-minute default function timeout; ten-minute maximum. | Potentially suitable for short, bounded individual screenshot tasks, not a single execution that must finish an entire large batch. |
| Flex Consumption | Thirty-minute default and no enforced maximum function execution timeout in current scale documentation. The documentation describes a 60-minute scale-in grace period and 10 minutes during platform updates for relevant plans. | Evaluate when its execution and scaling characteristics fit the individual task and operational needs; still checkpoint work. |
| Premium | Thirty-minute default and no enforced maximum function execution timeout in current scale documentation. The documentation describes a 60-minute scale-in grace period and 10 minutes during platform updates for relevant plans. | Evaluate when the workload needs its hosting characteristics and longer-running work; do not use the timeout as a substitute for durable task boundaries. |
| Dedicated / App Service | Timeout configuration still matters; Always On is needed for Functions on an App Service plan to run correctly. | Consider where a stable or manually/autoscaled allocation suits the workload. |
| Container Apps | Confirm the current Functions hosting comparison and trigger/replica behavior for the specific design. | Consider when a containerized browser runtime or custom image is relevant. |
These limits and operational details are from Microsoft’s current scale and hosting documentation; check that page before deployment because platform guidance can change. The HTTP response ceiling remains separate from function execution timeout. Configure functionTimeout intentionally for the unit of work, and do not design a batch around one execution exceeding the plan’s limit. Microsoft’s legacy-plan documentation says Linux Consumption is planned to retire on 30 September 2028; recheck the notice and prefer current plan guidance for new deployments: Azure Functions Consumption plan (legacy).

Make retries and results safe
- Give every job and item a stable identity and derive output keys from those identities.
- Record an explicit state for each item, such as queued, running, succeeded, or failed, along with a useful failure category.
- Retry transient navigation or infrastructure failures with bounded attempts and backoff appropriate to the failure class. Avoid blindly retrying deterministic failures such as an invalid URL.
- Make storage writes idempotent or use a temporary-then-finalize approach so a retry cannot present a partial file as a finished screenshot.
- Keep batch completion separate from batch success: all items can be terminal while some have failed.
These are implementation practices, not guarantees supplied by Azure’s runtime. Microsoft’s Ceruleoscope repository is an example combining Playwright with scheduled Azure Functions and Application Insights, including Linux/Node.js setup notes, browser path configuration, and trace storage. Treat it as an example to inspect, not a supported deployment contract; confirm package versions and browser installation behavior against current documentation.
Keep visual captures comparable
If the job supports visual regression, standardize the capture environment. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with operating system, browser and version, fonts, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. A changed pixel is not automatically an application change if the capture environment also changed. Pin or otherwise control the browser and runtime setup and use consistent fonts and capture settings. See the Playwright project README.

Or skip the browser setup
For a hosted screenshot API instead of maintaining browser workers, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request with a URL and can return a screenshot or PDF. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. For a batch, call the endpoint once per URL from your producer or worker and keep your own job manifest and status tracking.
ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try if you want to avoid deploying and maintaining browser infrastructure. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Response |
|---|---|---|
| The HTTP caller times out while the function is still running. | The endpoint is waiting for the entire batch; HTTP responses have a 230-second ceiling. | Persist the job, return its ID promptly, and process items asynchronously. |
| A task ends before navigation or capture completes. | The task exceeds its configured function or operation timeout, or an individual page is slow. | Check the hosting plan limit, set a deliberate functionTimeout, set bounded navigation timeouts, and split the work into per-item tasks. |
| Browser startup fails in Azure although it works locally. | The deployed OS image may lack the matching browser binary or required system libraries. | Install/package the selected Playwright browser and dependencies for the deployed runtime; verify in the same OS configuration. The Ceruleoscope example can inform investigation, but confirm its setup against current Playwright and Azure guidance. |
| Workers become slow or unstable as parallel work rises. | Browser processes are competing for shared CPU, memory, or connections on an instance. | Reduce parallel browsers, inspect resource metrics and duration percentiles, then increase concurrency gradually only after representative tests. |
| Some pages render incompletely. | The chosen navigation event occurred before application content or lazy assets were ready. | Wait for a page-specific selector or suitable readiness condition and validate against representative target pages. |
| Retries produce duplicates or confusing output. | Tasks lack stable identities or writes are not idempotent. | Use stable job/item IDs and output keys; record attempt and terminal state separately from the file reference. |
| Visual diffs appear after deployment without a site change. | Browser, OS, fonts, headless mode, hardware, or other rendering conditions changed. | Keep the capture environment and browser version consistent before interpreting pixel differences. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Should every URL get its own task?
That is a useful default because it isolates failures and supports per-item status; use a small bounded chunk only when the application has a reason to group URLs.
Does the Azure timeout determine how long my HTTP client can wait?
No. The HTTP-triggered response ceiling is separate from the configured function execution timeout.
