To play videos in random order on a YouTube live stream, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source: add your authorized video files to its playlist, enable Shuffle Playlist, and optionally enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, check the preview, and start the broadcast.
Before you set up the stream
Check that your channel can go live
Your channel must be verified and eligible for live streaming. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Live streamers must also be at least 16, and the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before planning a broadcast.

Use videos you have permission to broadcast
Prepare local video files and confirm you have the rights needed to rebroadcast them. A video being publicly viewable on YouTube does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube warns that copyright strikes or Community Guidelines strikes can lead to a live stream being terminated; Content ID claims may also be made against an archived stream. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Set up a shuffled playlist in OBS
Install OBS Studio and VLC
Install OBS Studio and VLC on the computer that will run the stream. The OBS VLC Video Source depends on VLC being installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well; matching the application architecture avoids the source being unavailable because of a mismatch. OBS documents the requirements in its Media Sources guide.

Add your files and enable shuffle
- Open OBS and select or create the scene that will show the videos.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a VLC Video Source.
- In the source properties, add the local video files you want in the playlist.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist to randomize the playlist’s file order.
- Enable Loop Playlist if you want the source to restart the playlist after it reaches the end.
- Confirm the source is visible in the preview and that its audio is routed as intended in the OBS audio mixer.
OBS describes shuffle as randomizing the playlist files. Its documentation does not specify exactly when the order is reshuffled or promise a fresh independent random choice after every video. Treat this as shuffled playlist playback, not as a guaranteed new draw for each clip or each loop.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
Get the stream URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live.
- Create a stream in Live Control Room or select a scheduled stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service when available, and enter or select the server and stream key as prompted by your OBS version.
The stream key is a credential that allows your encoder to send video to your channel. Keep it private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube’s current steps are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Start and end the broadcast
- Start streaming in OBS so the encoder sends the playlist to YouTube.
- Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room and inspect the preview.
- For a scheduled stream, select Go live in Live Control Room once the preview is correct.
- When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder as directed by the current interface.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For longer broadcasts, check the current YouTube guidance rather than assuming the archive will be complete.

Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. In its H.264 guidance accessed in 2026, YouTube lists 5 Mbps recommended at 1080p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p60; these are recommendations for those specific outputs, not universal settings for every codec or frame rate. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for your target format. Use RTMPS where available for encrypted ingest.

- Run a private or unlisted test before an important public stream.
- Check that the YouTube preview shows both video and audio before going live.
- Monitor stream health in Live Control Room and make sure your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
Troubleshooting
VLC Video Source is missing in OBS
Confirm VLC is installed. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installing VLC and check the Sources add menu again.
The playlist will not play or loop
Reopen the VLC Video Source properties and verify that the intended files are in the playlist, then check the Loop Playlist setting if playback should restart at the end. Test the source in OBS before connecting to YouTube so you can distinguish a local playback problem from a streaming problem.

YouTube does not show a preview
Confirm that OBS is streaming, the correct stream URL and key are configured, and the selected YouTube event is the one whose credentials you copied. Keep the stream key private and replace it in OBS if you suspect it has been exposed.
The stream buffers or looks poor
Compare the OBS output settings with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Reduce the output demand if your upload connection cannot sustain it, then test again and monitor stream health in Live Control Room.
