Use the spare PC as the streaming and encoding computer: send it the source PC’s video and audio, bring that feed into OBS, then send a 3840×2160, 60 fps stream to YouTube. For 4K60, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 50 Mbps for H.264. A second PC is optional, not a YouTube requirement—and it will work only if the capture path, encoder, and upload connection can all handle the target.
Choose between one-PC and dual-PC streaming
You can stream from the same PC that produces the video, or use a dual PC streaming setup in which one machine runs the game or other source and the spare PC captures, encodes, and sends the stream. A second PC can separate streaming work from the source machine, but does not automatically improve quality. The spare PC must still be capable of encoding 4K60, and the source signal must reach it without losing the resolution, frame rate, or audio you need.
| Setup | Signal path | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One PC | OBS captures sources on the same computer and encodes them for YouTube. | That PC must run the source, capture, and chosen 4K60 encoder workload together. |
| Two PCs | The source PC sends video and audio to the spare PC; OBS on the spare PC captures and encodes the incoming feed. | Check the capture device’s actual 4K60 capture support, host connection, audio routing, encoder capability, and upload stability. |
There is no universal CPU or GPU minimum established here: feasibility depends on the exact source and spare-PC hardware, encoder, capture device, and network. Check the current requirements and manuals for the particular components rather than assuming that any spare computer can handle the job. OBS’s official knowledge base links to its Quick Start, system-requirement, and Game Capture guides.
Build the dual-PC signal path
1. Send video and audio to the spare PC
A common two-PC arrangement uses an HDMI capture card: connect the source PC’s video output to the card, then connect the card to the spare PC. Duplicate the source display if your configuration requires the game or content to appear on both a local display and the capture feed. Exact cabling and display settings depend on the capture card and graphics outputs; follow their manuals. A dual-PC setup guide illustrates this general signal path, but its model-specific details should not be treated as current compatibility advice.

2. Verify capture, not just passthrough
Before buying or connecting a 4K60 capture card, confirm that the exact model captures 3840×2160 at 60 fps to the host. A 4K60 passthrough specification alone does not establish 4K60 capture. Check the card’s capture resolution and frame rate, interface bandwidth, required host slot or USB connection, operating-system support, audio handling, and HDR limits. Then make sure the source GPU output and display/capture topology support the signal you intend to send.
3. Add the feed and audio in OBS
Install OBS on the spare PC, add the capture device as a source, and configure its audio so the stream carries the intended sound. Set the OBS canvas and output to 3840×2160 and the frame rate to 60 fps; choose an encoder the spare PC actually supports. Menu names and available controls vary by OBS version and encoder. Use the OBS knowledge base for the current setup and system-requirement guidance, and consult the capture-device manual for its source and audio configuration.

Configure YouTube Live for 4K60
Connect OBS to the YouTube broadcast using the stream key and ingest details shown for your live stream. Treat the key as a password: do not display or share it, and replace it in YouTube if it is exposed. YouTube’s encoder setup page lists encoder options; the live encoder settings page gives the ingest requirements and bitrate recommendations.
Video, protocol, bitrate, and keyframes
| Setting | 4K60 guidance |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 3840×2160 (2160p), 60 fps. |
| Video codec and bitrate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC: 35 Mbps recommended, 10 Mbps minimum. H.264: 50 Mbps recommended, 14 Mbps minimum. These are YouTube live-ingest figures, not a guarantee that a particular encoder or connection can sustain them. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate). |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS is recommended by YouTube; its encoder settings also list RTMP. |
The recommended bitrate is not a substitute for stable upload capacity. If the connection cannot reliably hold the chosen rate, reduce the output settings or use the fallback below rather than forcing a bitrate that causes an unstable stream. The encoder must also support the selected codec at the target resolution and frame rate; a codec being listed by YouTube does not mean every PC can encode it.

Audio and optional advanced SDR settings
For stereo audio over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s guidance is AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its 5.1-channel guidance is AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. For advanced SDR encoder settings, YouTube lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709, and 8-bit depth. Not every encoder or OBS interface exposes these controls in the same way; use the matching options where available rather than assuming identical labels.
Fallback: 4K30
If the spare PC or connection cannot sustain 4K60, 4K30 is a different target that may be more manageable. YouTube’s live table recommends 30 Mbps for AV1/HEVC at 2160p30 (8 Mbps minimum), or 42 Mbps for H.264 (11 Mbps minimum). Do not confuse these live-ingest figures with YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos.

Test the whole setup before going live
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test broadcast. Include representative motion and audio, as YouTube advises, rather than checking only a static screen.
- Check the complete signal chain. Confirm the captured image is 3840×2160 at 60 fps, audio reaches OBS, and sound and picture stay synchronized.
- Watch YouTube stream health and messages. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the event. Check OBS and YouTube for dropped frames, capture interruptions, or encoder overload.
- Confirm upload stability at the selected rate. A nominal connection speed does not prove that the stream can hold a steady bitrate. If the test is unstable, reduce bitrate, frame rate, or resolution until the full chain is reliable.
YouTube automatically transcodes live video into formats for viewers, but that does not eliminate the need to send a stable, correctly configured ingest stream. YouTube says 2160p streams do not offer its low-latency option and run at normal latency.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.HDR is a separate configuration
Do not assume a normal SDR 4K60 setup will produce HDR. YouTube’s HDR live-streaming instructions say HDR live streaming currently requires HEVC and describe additional source, encoder, profile, bit-depth, color-format, color-space, and stream-key requirements, including OBS configuration. Confirm every link in that chain supports the intended HDR format before enabling it.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Capture feed is not 4K60 | The card supports 4K60 passthrough but not capture at that rate, or another part of the signal path limits the mode. | Check the exact card’s capture specifications, source output, display topology, host interface, and OBS source settings. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health degrades | The upload cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate, or there is a connection or ingest issue. | Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS stats; test a stable connection and reduce bitrate or output settings if needed. A wired Ethernet connection can be worth checking if the current network path is unstable, but YouTube does not require Ethernet. |
| Video stutters while encoding | The spare PC or selected encoder cannot keep up with the 4K60 workload. | Check encoder load and frame drops, verify the selected encoder is supported, and try 4K30 or a lower output resolution. Do not infer capability from the fact that OBS launches. |
| Audio is missing or out of sync | The capture device’s audio path or OBS source routing is incomplete, or the source and captured audio arrive at different times. | Check the card’s audio setup and OBS mixer/source configuration, then retest synchronization with representative content. |
| Stream does not match the intended codec or format | The OBS encoder, YouTube ingest settings, and source configuration may not align. | Verify the selected encoder and codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current live encoder settings. |
