How to Fix Dropped Frames in OBS When Streaming a Video Playlist to YouTube

Find out whether OBS dropped frames come from the YouTube upload path, rendering, encoding, or playlist playback—and which fix to try first.

First check which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames point to the connection between OBS and YouTube; rendering lag and encoding lag point to a computer struggling to build or encode the video. The remedies differ, so open View → Stats while streaming a representative part of the playlist before changing settings.

Identify what OBS is reporting

In OBS, open View → Stats during a test stream. Watch the network dropped-frames count, frames missed due to rendering lag, and skipped frames due to encoding lag. Record which counter rises and when. A choppy picture alone does not identify the cause.

  • Network dropped frames: OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the remote server or sustain the configured bitrate. OBS Project defines it this way in its connection troubleshooting guide.
  • Rendering lag: OBS is having trouble compositing and rendering the scene, a GPU workload. A complex scene or demanding media playback can contribute.
  • Encoding lag: the system or encoder is not encoding frames quickly enough.

A local playlist does not inherently cause network drops. It may add decoding or rendering work, but a rising network counter directs attention to the sending path. If OBS counters stay clear while viewers report buffering, investigate playback separately: the viewer’s connection or congestion can affect playback even when OBS is sending properly. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for streaming and video issues on a computer.

Fix network dropped frames

Change one thing at a time, then test the same playlist segment again and watch Stats. Lowering bitrate can reduce quality, but a bitrate your connection reliably sustains is better than one that repeatedly outruns it.

1. Lower the video bitrate to a sustainable level

Use the YouTube recommendations below as a platform target, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain it. Measure your upload under the conditions you will stream in, allow headroom for fluctuations and other network use, and choose a bitrate the connection can maintain consistently. Avoid selecting a rate solely from a brief best-case speed test.

In OBS, open Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and adjust the streaming encoder’s bitrate. Menu labels can vary slightly by OBS version and encoder. If you are unsure which codec or mode you are using, check the encoder settings in OBS and match YouTube’s applicable row rather than copying a bitrate from a different resolution, frame rate, or codec.

2. Test the network path

  • If you are on Wi-Fi, test over wired Ethernet. A steadier local connection can help distinguish Wi-Fi instability from an upstream issue.
  • Temporarily test without a VPN, if you use one. Check whether security software or a firewall is interfering with OBS’s connection.
  • Check for vendor network-management or “prioritization” software, and update network drivers where appropriate.
  • Restart or inspect the router and modem, and consider ISP congestion or routing problems, especially if drops occur at particular times.
  • Testing another streaming service can help establish whether the trouble is service-specific, but it does not repair a route to YouTube.

OBS documents these potential network causes and remedies in its connection troubleshooting guide. Its network optimization and TCP pacing options are Windows-only; they are not universal fixes. Dynamic bitrate can reduce bitrate during congestion to preserve continuity, but image quality can fall and it does not solve the underlying connection problem.

3. Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings

YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), recommends RTMPS, and says Live Control Room detects encoder settings automatically by default. Match bitrate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. The figures below are YouTube’s published recommendations accessed October 3, 2026; the page view has no visible publication date, and the recommendations may change.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 H.264
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 30 Mbps recommended; 8 Mbps minimum 42 Mbps recommended; 11 Mbps minimum
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum 34 Mbps recommended; 8 Mbps minimum
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum 21 Mbps recommended; 7 Mbps minimum
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum

These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not a custom setting for every connection. The full YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page includes 720p and lower modes. Use its current table if streaming at those settings.

Fix rendering or encoding lag

If rendering or encoding lag rises while the network dropped-frames count remains low, focus on workload rather than first lowering network bitrate. OBS Project notes that it needs GPU time and resources to composite and render a scene in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

  • Reduce output resolution or frame rate in Settings → Video. If 60 fps is not working reliably, try 30 fps.
  • Simplify the scene: remove unnecessary sources and disable costly filters or effects to see whether the counter improves.
  • Close other GPU-heavy applications while streaming.
  • If a media file is much larger in resolution than the stream output, use a more appropriate source or media resolution where practical.
  • For a supported file, OBS Media Source offers a hardware-decoding option when the GPU supports it. Results depend on the file and machine, so test rather than assume it will help.

After each adjustment, run the same representative section again. Reducing resolution or frame rate can lower visual detail or motion smoothness; choose the highest setting that runs consistently on your system.

Check the playlist source and media playback

For a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and requires VLC to be installed. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. The source has loop, shuffle, visibility, and network-caching controls. OBS documents these details in Media Sources.

  1. In the scene that should play the playlist, add or select a VLC Video source and confirm the intended files or playlist entries are present.
  2. Check the source’s loop and shuffle choices against the intended playback behavior.
  3. Confirm the source is visible in the scene when it should be on screen. Visibility changes can make a source appear to stop even when the stream itself remains connected.
  4. For local files, verify that each file opens and plays correctly. For network URLs, distinguish media fetching and playback trouble from the separate OBS-to-YouTube upload connection.
  5. VLC Video exposes network caching, but OBS does not prescribe one universal cache value for local-file playlists. Avoid guessing a number; change it only to investigate an observed playback problem and compare the result.

For a single supported media file rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source handles individual files and offers hardware decoding where supported. A playlist source or decoder issue can disrupt playback without being the cause of OBS’s network dropped-frames counter.

Run a representative test and read the result

  1. Choose a playlist segment with the usual motion, audio, and scene changes; a static or unusually light section may hide a problem.
  2. Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate YouTube test stream, and monitor OBS Stats throughout the segment.
  3. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health as well as the OBS counters. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health.
  4. Change only the setting tied to the counter that rises. Repeat the same segment so the comparison is meaningful.

If the counters remain clear but viewers still see buffering, compare playback from another network or device and consult YouTube’s viewer-side troubleshooting steps. That test helps separate delivery to viewers from OBS’s upload to YouTube.
