To run a 24/7 YouTube study stream, create a YouTube Live event, send it an encoder feed using the event’s RTMPS URL and stream key, and keep the encoder computer online. FFmpeg can loop media, but looping alone does not ensure seamless transitions or automatic recovery. The official material available for this guide does not establish a verified, current VLC-to-YouTube command, so this walkthrough explains the supported setup and settings without inventing VLC syntax or claiming an untested FFmpeg recipe works for every file.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live access can take time to activate, so enable it well before the planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming readiness guidance.
- A video or playlist you have the rights to stream, plus a computer that can run your chosen encoder continuously.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity and headroom above the encoder’s bitrate.
- A YouTube Live event, its stream URL and its private stream key.
- A plan to check stream health and recover if the encoder, network or YouTube connection fails.
Keep the computer powered and prevent sleep while encoding. A local setup is only as continuous as its computer, electricity, internet connection and encoder process.

Create the YouTube event and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, and create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room.
- Choose the event’s encoder setup and copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Prefer the RTMPS URL displayed for that event; YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Do not assume a sample endpoint is the correct endpoint for every event. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and RTMPS guidance.
- Enter the URL and key in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, show it in a recording or share it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s encoder settings and update the encoder with the replacement key. See YouTube’s stream-key instructions.
- Set the event’s visibility and schedule, then use Live Control Room’s preview to confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed before starting the public broadcast.
Choose output settings that match your video
YouTube’s encoder settings page, checked in 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Confirm that the selected codec is supported by the installed FFmpeg build and accepted by the ingest configuration. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Recommended Free Tools
| H.264 output example | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a measurement of your home connection. Choose the row that matches the intended resolution and frame rate; do not treat one bitrate as suitable for every stream. Leave upload headroom for network variation, and test the selected settings before announcing the event. Higher resolution or frame rate can require more bitrate and encoding capacity; re-encoding also adds CPU or GPU load.

- Bitrate: use YouTube’s current table for the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec rather than guessing.
- Rate control: select CBR where the encoder exposes that setting.
- Keyframes: target a two-second interval and keep it at or below four seconds.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3; check that audio is present and remains synchronized throughout the loop.
- Transport: use the RTMPS URL provided in the event’s Live Control Room setup.
Looping media with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents looping mechanisms, including a loop filter where loop=-1 means infinite loops for that filter. That documentation does not validate a complete 24/7 YouTube command or guarantee seamless audio, clean timestamps, compatibility with a particular media file, or reconnection after a network fault. Command-line option order matters, and FFmpeg options may apply to the next input or output depending on where they appear. Check the installed build’s documentation and inspect the input streams before constructing a command. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg filter documentation.
- Inspect the source file’s video and audio streams, duration, frame rate, codec and audio presence. Confirm that both streams can continue cleanly at the loop point.
- Choose whether to copy compatible streams or re-encode. Stream copying avoids encoding load but may not meet YouTube’s ingest settings; re-encoding gives control over output settings but requires sufficient CPU or GPU capacity.
- Build and validate the FFmpeg input-loop and output configuration against the actual file, FFmpeg version and YouTube settings. Keep the event URL and stream key out of public logs and screenshots.
- Run a private or unlisted test event, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and watch playback on another device. A loop that works locally is not proof that the live ingest, audio or reconnect behavior is reliable.
- For an actual 24/7 run, supervise the process and have a restart/recovery procedure. FFmpeg’s loop feature by itself is not a service manager and does not guarantee recovery from a dropped connection.
What VLC can and cannot be assumed to do
The available authoritative setup and implementation documentation establishes YouTube ingest requirements and FFmpeg features, but not a current, supported VLC direct-ingest command for YouTube. VLC may suit local playlist playback, but do not rely on an undocumented sout command or assume playlist repeat will survive network faults. If you choose VLC, verify its current version-specific output and repetition behavior independently, then test against an unlisted YouTube event before relying on it. Do not treat the VLC and FFmpeg paths as equivalently verified.

Test and monitor the stream
- Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test using the same media, encoder settings, network and machine planned for the live broadcast.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview and check for warnings or ingest problems.
- Watch the playback on a separate device. Confirm image quality, audio level, synchronization and loop transition.
- Keep monitoring stream health while live. YouTube advises testing the encoder and continuously monitoring stream quality; see YouTube’s live-streaming readiness guidance.
Copyright, reused material and archive limits
Only stream study music, ambience, visuals and other material you are entitled to use for a public live broadcast. The setup instructions cited here do not determine whether a particular 24/7 reused-content format qualifies for monetization, or whether specific material is cleared for your use. Check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies and the terms or licenses for every asset; do not assume that crediting an artist or finding a track online grants live-stream rights.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A continuous live broadcast and a complete 24-hour archived video are separate outcomes. YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that instruction does not establish that a longer event will be saved as one complete video. If a full archive matters, plan separate recordings or shorter events and verify YouTube’s current behavior before launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup page.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable | The channel is not verified, has a recent live restriction, or first-time activation is pending. | Check channel eligibility and enable live streaming ahead of launch; consult YouTube’s readiness guidance. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Wrong event URL or key, incorrect RTMP/RTMPS endpoint, or a key reset not reflected in the encoder. | Copy the URL and key from the current event’s Live Control Room setup; reset an exposed key and update the encoder. |
| Preview buffers or quality degrades | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable for the selected output bitrate. | Check actual upstream capacity, reduce output demands if needed, leave headroom, and repeat a test at the final settings. |
| Output settings are rejected or produce poor results | Codec, frame rate, bitrate or keyframe interval does not match YouTube’s current recommendations or encoder support. | Match the selected resolution and frame rate to YouTube’s table; check CBR and the two-second keyframe target (no more than four seconds). |
| Audio drops or the loop has a gap | The file’s audio stream or loop point may not be continuous; a filter loop does not guarantee a seamless transition. | Inspect and test the actual source file and loop boundary, then listen to playback throughout a full cycle. |
| The stream stops after a disconnect | The encoder or local network did not recover automatically. | Monitor the broadcast, confirm whether the process is still running, and use a tested restart and reconnection procedure. Do not assume looping alone handles network recovery. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live; it does not stream from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on.
