You can run a 24/7 YouTube study-music stream by sending a looping audio-and-video program from FFmpeg on a VPS to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The VPS keeps the encoder running when your own computer is off, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: the media, server, network, ingest, and YouTube broadcast configuration all need to work together.
What you need before starting
- A VPS with enough sustained CPU capacity to encode your chosen video and audio settings, plus outbound bandwidth to carry the stream continuously. No universal minimum VPS plan is established; assess the provider’s CPU, network limits, region, reliability, support, and total price.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS. Confirm the installed build supports your chosen output protocol and codecs, and consult its documentation for the exact syntax supported by that version.
- A stable audio program and visual loop that decode cleanly and can repeat without unwanted gaps or abrupt transitions.
- Permission to use every track in a livestream, and, if you keep an archive or monetize it, permission for those uses too. Buying a file, calling it study music, or giving attribution does not by itself establish those rights.
- A YouTube channel and a configured or scheduled live broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Account eligibility and activation requirements depend on YouTube and are not covered by this guide.
Do not use a VPS as a substitute for clearing music rights. No particular music catalog or license is established here as sufficient for this use.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet up the YouTube broadcast and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, configure or schedule the live broadcast you intend viewers to watch.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that setup. Use the RTMPS URL when supported: YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the stream in transit. If the ordinary RTMP URL is displayed, check the available RTMPS setup details in Live Control Room.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a public command, screenshot, repository, or log. Store it in a restricted environment variable or a permissions-limited configuration file, and avoid printing it during troubleshooting.
- Use the URL and key for the same YouTube stream configuration. Depending on the encoder, the stream URL and stream name may be entered separately or combined as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. For API-based setups, use the account’s returned ingest address and stream name; do not copy an endpoint from an old tutorial.
YouTube’s Live API distinguishes the encoder-facing stream configuration from the broadcast event. Reconnecting FFmpeg does not necessarily create or resume the public broadcast you intended, so verify the broadcast lifecycle as well as the encoder connection.
Choose FFmpeg settings that fit both YouTube and the VPS
Set resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, codec, and the VPS’s sustained upload capacity as one configuration. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into viewer formats. These are current YouTube Help recommendations accessed 2026-10-03; consult the live guidance for bitrate ranges at your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than carrying over a bitrate from an unrelated example: YouTube encoder settings.

- Protocol: For a standard SDR stream, use RTMPS if your FFmpeg build and YouTube setup support it. YouTube says HLS can be considered for HDR or capabilities not supported over RTMP(S); choose based on actual codec, HDR, and encoder compatibility rather than assuming one protocol fits every use.
- Video quality: Select a resolution and frame rate the VPS can encode and upload continuously. Higher settings need more encoding capacity and network headroom. Use YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate ranges, then test the VPS’s real outbound capacity.
- Bitrate mode: Use CBR as YouTube recommends for encoder output. Do not assume the VPS can sustain the target just because a short speed test reaches it.
- Keyframes: Aim for one keyframe every two seconds and do not exceed a four-second interval. Calculate GOP length from the selected frame rate: for example, at 30 fps, a two-second interval corresponds to 60 frames.
- Audio: YouTube’s current guidance lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1, with recommended audio bitrates of 128 kbps stereo and 384 kbps 5.1. Use settings appropriate to your actual channel layout and encoder path.
There is no single FFmpeg command that can be guaranteed for every FFmpeg build, media format, and YouTube ingest configuration. Check the installed FFmpeg documentation for input looping, output options, and protocol syntax, then test the complete command with your own files before using it for a public broadcast: FFmpeg documentation.
Build and test the continuous program
- Check the media first. Confirm that the audio and visual files decode, have the intended duration and layout, and are cleared for livestreaming and any archive. Decide how the visual should repeat and whether you need one continuous audio file or a playlist.
- Configure looping intentionally. Use FFmpeg’s documented input-loop or playlist behavior for the formats you have. Option names and behavior can vary with FFmpeg version and input type; test for gaps, drift, unexpected transitions, and whether the process exits when an input ends.
- Set the output for real-time streaming. Configure the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR target, audio format, and keyframe interval, then send it to the RTMPS ingest URL with the protected stream key. Confirm whether your encoder expects the key separately or as part of the destination.
- Test before going live. YouTube explicitly advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with representative audio and visual movement, not only a static or silent sample. Check that the VPS can sustain the upload and encoding load, and review YouTube’s incoming stream health and messages.
- Verify what viewers will receive. An FFmpeg process that remains alive proves only that the process is running. Confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream and that the intended broadcast is live and displaying the correct program.
YouTube’s official encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, described as a secure extension to RTMP, and calls for testing before streaming. The page does not state a publication year; these recommendations refer to the current page accessed 2026-10-03.

Keep FFmpeg running and monitor the broadcast
Run the encoder under a process supervisor or service manager configured for your VPS, so it can start after a server reboot and restart after a process failure. A supervisor handles the local process lifecycle; it cannot detect every YouTube-side problem or guarantee that a restarted encoder will resume the intended public broadcast. Check the manager’s logs without exposing the stream key, and separately inspect Live Control Room’s health indicators and messages.
Plan for the broadcast lifecycle independently from FFmpeg. YouTube’s Live API treats stream settings and broadcast events as separate resources and discusses 24/7 feeds. Confirm how your channel’s continuous broadcast is configured, including what should happen when the encoder disconnects and reconnects. Do not assume that an encoder reconnect automatically creates or resumes the correct public video.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming signal | Destination URL, RTMP/RTMPS selection, stream key, and whether the URL and key belong to the same stream setup. | Compare the destination with the values in Live Control Room. If using RTMPS, use the RTMPS ingest URL and verify the key without exposing it in logs or screenshots. |
| TLS or SSL connection error | Whether the protocol and server are both configured for RTMPS and whether the destination matches the account’s current ingest details. | Correct the protocol/server mismatch. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says port 443 may be specified if an SSL error persists and the URL setup calls for it; do not add it blindly to an unrelated endpoint. See YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| Stream is unstable or health warnings appear | Whether the VPS sustains the configured bitrate and encoding load, and whether settings are appropriate for the selected resolution and frame rate. | Lower the target quality or bitrate within YouTube’s current guidance, run another test using representative content, and review Live Control Room health messages. |
| FFmpeg is running, but viewers see a problem | Whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream and whether the public broadcast is in the expected state. | Separate process status from received-stream status: inspect YouTube’s health feedback and the broadcast configuration instead of relying on the VPS process alone. |
| FFmpeg reconnects, but the public broadcast behaves incorrectly | The encoder-facing stream resource and the broadcast event are separate; reconnection alone may not restore the intended broadcast. | Review the channel’s broadcast lifecycle and the YouTube stream/broadcast settings. Confirm the intended event is live and linked to the correct ingest configuration. |
| Audio or video stops, drifts, or exits early | Input files, playlist or loop behavior, FFmpeg version, and end-of-file handling. | Test the exact media and command locally or on a non-public test broadcast; consult the documentation for the installed build and adjust its documented looping behavior. |
Cost and operational trade-offs
A VPS approach gives you control over the encoder and media workflow, but you pay for rented infrastructure and take responsibility for configuration, monitoring, restarts, and recovery. Compare providers on sustained CPU, outbound traffic limits, network reliability and region, support, and total price. The available guidance does not establish a minimum VPS size or a tested end-to-end command, so choose capacity based on measured load and a representative test rather than a promised plan specification.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain an FFmpeg process and VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded content in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for uploaded video playback, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
