This guide covers the setup, an FFmpeg recovery pattern, Linux service supervision, and the limits of an unattended stream.
What you need before starting
- A Linux machine that can remain powered, connected to the internet, and able to read the source video. A laptop that sleeps or a command attached to a closing terminal is not a dependable unattended host.
- FFmpeg installed with the required input and output support. Available codecs and muxer features depend on the FFmpeg build; check the local build and test the command before relying on it.
- A YouTube live stream created or scheduled in Live Control Room, with its stream URL and key.
- Sustained upload capacity above the selected outgoing bitrate, with headroom for network variation.
YouTube’s official encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. The current encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, with frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Use the table for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream: YouTube’s encoder settings.
Choose an ingest profile and plan the connection
Start with a bitrate YouTube specifies
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s current encoder table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. For H.264 at 720p30, it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s encoder settings, not a promise that your host or internet connection can sustain them. If the connection is uncertain, start with a lower resolution and bitrate supported by the table and verify stream health before raising the target.
Allow upload headroom
Measure upload speed, not download speed. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and says to account for primary and backup stream bitrate. Keep the configured stream below the upload capacity that remains reliable when the connection is busy or congested. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream into the FFmpeg output configuration. The key lets the encoder send a feed to YouTube; treat it like a password.
- Keep the key out of published scripts, shared terminals, and logs where possible. Avoid putting it in shell history; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before using the stream again.
- Start FFmpeg and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before treating the broadcast as ready.
YouTube’s setup and key-management guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
Prepare the video and FFmpeg command
For a prerecorded video, the basic approach is to read the file at real-time speed, loop the input, and send a stream to YouTube’s RTMP-compatible endpoint. Depending on the source codecs and the YouTube profile you choose, FFmpeg may be able to stream-copy the audio and video or may need to encode them. Do not assume a source file is suitable just because it plays locally: its codec, keyframe cadence, audio format, and container behavior may not match the ingest profile.
Use the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room as the output destination. Keep credentials out of command examples and shell history; supply the key through a protected configuration or other method appropriate to your system. The exact command options depend on the installed FFmpeg build and the input media, so validate the command with a short test rather than deploying an unverified one as a permanent service.

Align transcoding settings with YouTube
- Choose a supported video codec and a resolution/frame-rate bitrate from YouTube’s current encoder table.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Set audio to a supported format, such as AAC or MP3.
- If stream-copying, check that the source already meets the target profile; otherwise transcode to an appropriate profile.
Attempt recovery from temporary output failures
FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer pattern that can keep processing at real-time rate during temporary output failure and attempt to recover the output every second. Its example uses these options before mapping streams to an RTMP destination:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →-f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
This is an output-recovery mechanism, not an end-to-end guarantee. Test it against your installed FFmpeg version and YouTube endpoint, and monitor whether reconnection succeeds. See the FFmpeg documentation for the FIFO muxer and its options.
Keep FFmpeg running across shell exits and reboots
For unattended operation, use a service manager such as systemd if the target Linux distribution uses it. A service manager can start FFmpeg at boot, restart a process that exits, and make logs available outside an interactive shell. The exact unit file and service commands vary by distribution and machine; validate your configuration on the target system, then test a reboot before relying on it.

Process supervision addresses a process that exits. It does not repair a dead host, a missing or unreadable source file, exhausted disk space, a revoked key, a sustained network outage, or an interruption on YouTube’s side. FFmpeg’s output recovery and systemd’s restart behavior cover different failure layers, and neither makes a 24/7 stream self-monitoring. For a systemd-oriented discussion, see StreamNeo’s guide to running FFmpeg as a systemd service; check its details against your distribution and test your own service.
Test and monitor before leaving it unattended
- Run a short test with sound and motion similar to the content you plan to stream.
- Open the YouTube Live Control Room preview and confirm both picture and audio are present.
- Review stream-health messages and watch for dropped output or repeated reconnection attempts.
- Leave the stream running long enough to observe stability, then verify that the host, source file, and service behave as expected after a restart.
- Continue monitoring audio and video quality during the broadcast; an active FFmpeg process alone does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy feed.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited setup guidance does not promise an archive for an uninterrupted stream that reaches or exceeds 12 hours. If a replay matters, plan a recording or stream-segmentation approach and verify current YouTube behavior rather than assuming a multi-day broadcast will produce one complete archive. The condition appears in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that the stream is created or scheduled, that FFmpeg is using the matching stream URL and key, and that the key has not been reset or exposed. Confirm the output can reach the endpoint and inspect FFmpeg’s logs and Live Control Room status.
The stream connects but reports poor health
Compare the configured codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format with YouTube’s encoder table. Measure upload capacity and reduce the target if the connection cannot sustain it with the recommended headroom.
FFmpeg stops after a disconnect
Check whether the process exited or whether the output is still retrying. The FIFO muxer’s recovery options can attempt to re-open an output after a temporary failure; a service manager can restart an exited process. Review logs to identify which layer failed instead of assuming one setting fixes both.

The stream fails after reboot or shell logout
A command launched only in an interactive shell may end with the session or fail to start after reboot. Configure and validate a service manager on the target distribution, then test both logout and reboot behavior.
The video loops, but the broadcast is not reliable
Confirm the source file remains readable, the host has sufficient resources and disk space, and the network is stable. A loop only repeats media; it does not keep the host alive or resolve a sustained connection or YouTube-side failure.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a Linux computer or server to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, not live camera footage.
