How to Change Videos in a YouTube Live Stream Without Ending It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To change what viewers see without ending a YouTube live stream, switch the video source or scene in your encoder—such as OBS—while leaving the encoder’s streaming session running. Do not press Stop Streaming in the encoder or End Stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

Why you change the video in your encoder

YouTube receives the encoded feed; the encoder decides which video or scene appears in that feed. A scene or source change changes the program picture without ending the YouTube event. YouTube describes stopping the encoder’s feed as an end-of-stream action: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

This walkthrough uses OBS Studio. Other encoders may use different controls, so consult their current documentation for switching scenes or inputs while keeping the YouTube output active.

Prepare your videos in OBS before going live

  1. Create a scene for each video or layout. In OBS, add and name scenes so the operator can identify the right one quickly. OBS scenes are layouts made from sources. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  2. Add each video as a Media Source. Select the scene, add a Media Source, and choose the local file. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Configure options such as looping or restarting playback when the source becomes active if they suit your plan. See OBS Media Sources.
  3. Choose how you will switch. You can switch directly between scenes, or use Studio Mode to prepare the next scene in preview and transition it to the live program. OBS documents Cut and Fade transitions, with configurable duration. See the OBS overview.
  4. Check source order and visibility. If you prefer one scene with several video sources, add them to that scene and show the one you want while hiding the previous one. OBS’s Sources Guide covers adding, showing, hiding, and ordering sources.
  5. Test audio as well as picture. Confirm that the active video’s sound is routed into the encoder’s audio mix. A visible video source does not guarantee its audio is included.

Switch videos while the YouTube stream is live

  1. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder as directed by YouTube’s encoder setup guide. The stream key identifies where the encoder sends its feed; it is not a control for changing videos. See Manage live stream settings.
  2. Start the encoder and take the event live. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow to start sending the feed and take the stream live in Live Control Room.
  3. Select the next scene or source in OBS. For a direct switch, click the prepared scene. In Studio Mode, select it in Preview and use the chosen transition to send it to Program. With multiple sources in one scene, show the new source and hide the old one.
  4. Verify the result. Check that the intended picture and its audio reach the live stream. YouTube notes that its video away-slate overlay does not change audio sources; slate audio may need to be added separately to the encoder mix. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
  5. Keep the output running. Leave OBS streaming and the YouTube event open. Do not select Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in Live Control Room unless you intend to end the event.

Choose the switching method that fits the show

Method How it works Useful when Check before relying on it
Switch between scenes Each scene has its own layout and video source; select the next scene while the output remains live. You want distinct layouts or a simple manual change. Confirm the selected scene has the right video and audio sources.
Studio Mode Prepare a scene in Preview, then transition it to the live Program output. You want to preview the next layout before viewers see it. Choose and test the Cut or Fade transition and its duration.
Show and hide sources in one scene Toggle source visibility to replace the visible video. Your layout stays the same and only the video changes. Check source ordering and audio routing; picture visibility alone does not confirm sound.

OBS also documents playlist support through VLC when installed. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal best method for every encoder or setup; verify supported media and playback behavior in the documentation for your installed version.

What this does—and does not—change in YouTube

Switching a scene or source changes the picture being encoded. It does not require changing the YouTube event or resetting the stream key. YouTube’s stream settings govern the event and ingest connection; the stream key tells the encoder where to send its feed. If the encoder cannot connect, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to check the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the current key: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

If you need both horizontal and vertical output, plan that format before starting: YouTube’s getting-started guidance says you cannot add the vertical format once a stream has started.

Troubleshooting a video change

  • The stream ended. Check whether you stopped the encoder or selected End Stream in Live Control Room. Those actions end the feed or event. Reconnect or start a new stream using the encoder and YouTube controls; YouTube’s cited guidance does not promise that a concluded event can resume as the same live event.
  • The new video appears, but there is no sound. Check the Media Source’s audio settings and OBS’s audio mix. Make sure the intended audio source is active and routed to the stream.
  • The encoder will not connect. Check the stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the current key, following YouTube’s troubleshooting steps. Changing videos is not a reason to reset the key.
  • You mean a video already uploaded to YouTube. The encoder workflow described here switches sources supplied to the encoder; it does not establish a general way to switch between arbitrary YouTube video pages inside an active event. The video must be supplied as part of the ongoing encoder feed, and you should confirm the required capability in the production setup’s documentation.
  • You need a format change after going live. YouTube says vertical format cannot be added once the stream has started. Configure required output formats before the event using its live-streaming setup guidance.
