You can keep a prerecorded video streaming to YouTube after you turn off your computer by running FFmpeg on a rented Linux server and managing it as a Docker Compose service. The server must stay online, the media and encoder settings must be suitable for YouTube Live, and the stream key must be protected. Compose can restart a failed container, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream or fix a YouTube, network, or hosting-provider outage.
What you need before setting up the server
This method is for sending prerecorded media from a rented Linux server to YouTube Live. FFmpeg reads the media, loops or sequences it as configured, and sends the resulting stream to YouTube over RTMPS. Docker Compose manages the FFmpeg container as a service. RTMPS is an encrypted form of RTMP; YouTube’s guidance specifies TLS and port 443 for its ingestion service (YouTube RTMPS guidance; Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide).

- A Linux server with enough sustained outbound network capacity for your selected stream bitrate, plus audio and protocol overhead.
- Docker and Docker Compose installed and working on that server. The installation steps depend on the Linux distribution and current Docker packaging.
- Video and audio files you have the rights to stream, stored where the container can read them.
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream with an encoder, and a stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- A plan for logs, monitoring, restarts, and—if you need a replay—recording and storage.
No single server size or rental price is established for this workload. If FFmpeg must transcode, CPU capacity matters; if it can pass through compatible media, the compute load may be different. Check the provider’s current sustained outbound capacity, transfer allowance, region, CPU, storage, and recurring cost before choosing a plan.
Prepare YouTube Live and check content rights
Enable live streaming well before the planned start. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Encoder streaming requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days; check the current livestream terms and conditions.

Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every video, music track, image, and other element in the stream, including any material that will appear in an archive. YouTube may interrupt or terminate a stream over third-party content, a copyright strike, or a Community Guidelines strike. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams before going live.
Create a YouTube encoder stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream using an encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the stream creation and connection workflow.
- Copy the stream’s RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Do not guess an ingest address: use the one YouTube gives you. YouTube documents the server URL and stream name/key as connection details; encoders may accept them separately or as a combined destination (YouTube LiveStreams documentation).
- Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public repositories, screenshots, container images, and files that other server users can read. Supply it through a protected runtime configuration supported by your deployment rather than embedding it in a public Compose file.
- Prefer the RTMPS endpoint and verify that the server can make an outbound connection using TLS on port 443. YouTube’s RTMPS documentation explains the encrypted connection requirements (YouTube Help; Google Developers).
Put FFmpeg in a Compose-managed service
Create a Compose project on the Linux server around a maintained FFmpeg container image. The exact FFmpeg command depends on your input files, desired loop behavior, audio layout, and whether the media needs transcoding; there is no safe universal command for every file. Configure the service so it can read the chosen media, receive the protected stream destination and key at runtime, and send its output to YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint.

- Media mount: Make the source files available inside the container. Mount them read-only where practical so the encoder cannot accidentally alter originals.
- Loop or playlist behavior: Decide whether one file repeats or several files play in sequence. Test that behavior at the end of each file; reaching end-of-file must not leave the encoder stopped if the channel is meant to remain live.
- Encoding choice: If the source already matches the required container, codecs, frame rate, audio, and keyframe cadence, stream-copy may avoid re-encoding. Otherwise configure FFmpeg to encode compatible output. Confirm the result in YouTube’s preview rather than assuming a source file is suitable.
- Restart behavior: Set a container restart policy so a process or container exit can be recovered automatically. A restart policy does not fix a bad input, invalid key, full disk, lost network route, or an outage at the server provider or YouTube.
- Logging and health checks: Keep enough logs to diagnose repeated exits and configure a way to notice when the process is restarting or the stream is unhealthy. A running container alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a usable feed.
- Recording, if needed: Mount a persistent volume for local recordings and monitor its free space. Do not rely on the streaming container’s temporary filesystem as an archive.
Compose file syntax and secret mechanisms can change with Docker and Compose versions. Use the documentation for the versions installed on your server to define the service, mounts, runtime configuration, restart policy, and logs; validate the configuration before starting it. Once the Compose project is in place, start it with docker compose up -d, then inspect its status and logs using the commands appropriate to your installed Compose version. Keep the project files and logs accessible to the person responsible for operating the stream.
Match FFmpeg output to YouTube’s ingest settings
Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate based on the source and the quality you intend to deliver. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s table for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec; do not treat one bitrate as correct for every stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and its RTMPS ingestion recommendations.

Check the server’s real outbound capacity against the selected video bitrate, audio, and transport overhead, with headroom for variation. A plan’s advertised network speed or transfer allowance is not necessarily evidence of sustained throughput to YouTube’s ingest route. The provider’s location and network path can matter, so test from the actual rented server.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Use media that represents the real stream, including its loudest audio and most visually complex sections.
- Wait for the YouTube preview and inspect Live Control Room’s stream health. Confirm that video is moving, audio is audible and in sync, and YouTube is not reporting an ingest problem.
- Check the FFmpeg logs for errors and confirm that any local recording is growing on the persistent volume. YouTube’s livestream tips recommend testing and monitoring stream quality (YouTube live streaming tips).
- Exercise the failure cases that matter to your setup: end-of-file and looping, container exit and restart, server reboot, network interruption, and a deliberately rotated stream key. Verify how the public stream behaves and whether you receive an alert.
- Only after the test behaves as expected, start or schedule the public stream and keep monitoring both YouTube’s stream health and the server. Monitoring only the server cannot show whether YouTube is successfully receiving the feed.
Plan separately for uptime and replay
A restart policy can recover from some local failures, but uninterrupted viewing depends on more than Docker: the rented host, its outbound network, FFmpeg, the media, credentials, and YouTube ingest must all work. A restart loop can repeatedly fail if the underlying cause remains—for example, an unreadable file or revoked stream key—so inspect logs and YouTube’s health status rather than assuming an automatic restart solved the problem.

A continuous stream is also not a dependable archive. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and its DVR rewind feature may be limited or unavailable for streams beyond 12 hours. If viewers need a replay, maintain a separate recording and monitor disk capacity. YouTube’s guidance covers live-stream archives and DVR on live streams.

- Live Control Room never receives a feed: Check that the stream is active, the RTMPS URL and key are the current values from that stream, and the server can reach the endpoint on TLS port 443. Confirm the key was passed correctly at runtime.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or buffering: Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check sustained server upload capacity and network stability; reduce output demands or choose a better-suited hosting plan if capacity is inadequate.
- The container repeatedly restarts: Read the FFmpeg and container logs. Check input paths and file permissions, available disk space, encoding errors, and whether the key or destination was changed. The restart policy recovers a process exit, not the cause.
- The picture works but audio is absent or wrong: Check that the input contains the expected audio stream and that FFmpeg is mapping and encoding it to an audio codec YouTube accepts, such as AAC or MP3.
- The stream stops when a file ends: Revisit the FFmpeg input/loop or playlist configuration and test the transition between files. Do not assume a file will repeat automatically.
- The stream appears live but no replay is available: Very long live sessions may not be archived by YouTube. Use a separate local recording if replay is important and check the archive and DVR limits before relying on them.
- YouTube interrupts the stream: Review Live Control Room notices and the channel’s copyright or policy status. Use only material authorized for the stream and address any YouTube-side restriction before restarting.
