Yes—you can run a continuous YouTube stream from a mini PC by running an encoder locally and sending its output to YouTube Live. Whether it will stay reliable depends on the mini PC sustaining your chosen encoding workload, a stable local power supply and internet connection, and a plan to detect and recover from failures. Unlike a cloud server, the mini PC depends on services at your location.
How a mini PC sends a continuous stream to YouTube
The mini PC runs streaming software (an encoder), which sends audio and video to YouTube using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. The source could be a camera, screen, composed scene or prerecorded video; the right machine depends on what you ask it to do. A stream that must encode video in real time has a different workload from one that can pass through an already encoded source.

Choose a mini PC for the actual workload
There is no universal minimum mini PC specification established for 24/7 YouTube streaming. Before buying or repurposing a machine, decide the source, output resolution and frame rate, codec, audio, and whether the encoder must transcode, add overlays or combine inputs—or can simply transmit a compatible feed. Then test that exact configuration under sustained load. Do not assume a machine’s ability to play a video means it can encode that video continuously at the same resolution and frame rate.

- Encoding: Confirm the selected encoder and codec are supported by the machine, and test sustained output at the target quality. YouTube’s supported ingest options do not mean every mini PC can encode every option.
- Network: Check stable upstream capacity at the location where the PC will run. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom over the stream bitrate; include the primary and backup streams if you use both. Other devices sharing the connection and ISP interruptions can reduce available capacity.
- Power and environment: The mini PC needs local power and a suitable place to run continuously. A UPS can help through brief power interruptions, but will not fix an internet outage or a YouTube ingest issue.
- Operations: Plan for software updates, storage, monitoring and recovery after the encoder, network or host stops. A machine that works during a short test is not necessarily ready to run unattended.
Set YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Google describes it as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.” YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Follow YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the settings available to your encoder.
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates, not a measurement of mini PC performance or a guarantee that a particular connection will sustain them:

YouTube’s settings guidance also specifies progressive scan, a frame rate up to 60 fps, and 128 Kbps audio for stereo. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Match settings to your encoder’s capabilities and test before relying on a long-running stream.
Configure and test the mini PC
- Enable YouTube Live in advance. Confirm the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled; allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Choose the source and output. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, audio and codec. Determine whether the mini PC will encode, compose multiple inputs or transmit an already encoded feed.
- Create or select the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as the encoder’s password and address; treat the key as a credential and keep it out of screenshots, public scripts and logs. See YouTube stream settings.
- Set the encoder. Use RTMPS where supported, select a codec and bitrate appropriate to the output, use CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval without exceeding four seconds. Set audio and frame rate to match the intended stream.
- Check upload capacity. The available upload must exceed the total stream bitrate. Follow YouTube’s recommendation for 20% headroom, counting a backup stream if applicable. A wired connection is a practical choice where available, but the key requirement is a stable connection with sufficient upstream capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Run a representative test. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, listen to the audio, inspect the video and confirm public or unlisted playback behaves as expected. If recording locally, check that the recording file is growing and can be played back.
- Test failure and recovery. Before treating the setup as unattended-ready, test what happens when the network is interrupted and when the mini PC restarts. Arrange a way to notice a stopped encoder, failed source, lost network or reboot and to alert or recover. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing and monitoring but does not prescribe one watchdog or restart implementation.
Plan for outages and stream archives
A mini PC keeps the encoder at your location, so its power, network and machine health are part of the broadcast path. Monitoring can help you notice a failure; a UPS may cover a brief local power interruption. Neither solves every failure mode: an ISP outage can still stop delivery, and successful transmission does not guarantee that YouTube will retain a full archive.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Very long streams can also have limited DVR rewind. If retaining the content matters, record locally and consider ending and restarting the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours. Verify the local recording rather than assuming YouTube will retain a continuous archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance and YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Mini PC or cloud server?
| Consideration | Mini PC at your location | Cloud server |
|---|---|---|
| Compute | Test whether the exact machine sustains the chosen source, resolution, frame rate and codec. | Check whether the selected server can sustain the encoding workload and output settings. |
| Network path | Depends on local upstream capacity, the shared connection and local ISP availability. | Depends on the provider’s network and the connection from the server to YouTube. |
| Power and recovery | Depends on local electrical service and your monitoring and recovery arrangements. | Depends on the hosting provider and your ability to manage the server remotely. |
| Cost | Account for hardware, electricity, internet service, backup equipment and operator time. | Account for recurring server and bandwidth charges. |
| Control and maintenance | You control the local machine and source files, and maintain its software, storage, logs and recovery process. | You manage the server remotely and remain responsible for its streaming configuration and monitoring. |
There is no universal cost winner established by these factors alone. Compare actual costs for the intended run and location; the right choice also depends on whether you prefer maintaining local hardware or a remote server.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that live streaming is enabled, the server URL and stream key are correct, and the encoder is using a supported ingest configuration. Keep the stream key private.
- Frames drop or the connection disconnects: OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnects indicate a network problem between the computer and ingest server. Check the connection and available upload capacity; reducing bitrate is one troubleshooting option. See OBS connection troubleshooting.
- Playback is unstable despite adequate configured bitrate: Check whether other devices or streams are consuming upload bandwidth and whether the local connection is fluctuating. Confirm the available upstream still exceeds the total stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- The stream stops after a power event or restart: Check whether the mini PC rebooted, whether the encoder relaunched, and whether the source and network returned. Test your alert and recovery arrangement rather than assuming the encoder will resume automatically.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: Check the broadcast duration and local recording. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured in its archive.
