How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream from a Linux Server with an M3U Playlist

Use an always-on Linux server and FFmpeg to loop playlist media into YouTube Live, while keeping ordinary M3U source lists distinct from HLS media playlists.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream from Linux by having FFmpeg read your media playlist, encode its output, and send it continuously to the ingest address shown in YouTube Live Control Room. First identify what your M3U file contains: an ordinary M3U source list is not the same thing as YouTube’s HLS media playlist. The steps below cover the source-list workflow and explain when HLS is a different choice.

What you need before setting up the stream

The basic arrangement has four parts: media files or accessible media URLs, an M3U playlist that points to them, an always-on Linux server running an encoder, and a YouTube Live stream to receive the encoded output. The server needs stable outbound connectivity for as long as you want the channel live.

  • Media and rights: Use files or URLs the server can access, and make sure you have permission to stream every item, including music, artwork, and any embedded material. Continuous rebroadcast does not grant rights.
  • A playlist whose entries work on the server: Local paths must exist on the Linux host; remote URLs must be reachable from it. Relative paths are interpreted in relation to the playlist’s location or the player’s working directory, so verify how your chosen FFmpeg workflow resolves them.
  • An FFmpeg build with the needed support: Install a current package from your Linux distribution or another trusted packaging route, then confirm that it includes the protocols and codecs your input and output require. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes supported protocols: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
  • A YouTube Live setup: Live streaming must be available for your account. Check the current Live Control Room requirements and settings before scheduling the stream.
  • Server capacity and bandwidth: The host must sustain the output stream and any input downloads. If you transcode, it also needs enough CPU capacity for the chosen encoding settings. Check the provider’s sustained outbound bandwidth or transfer allowance, uptime terms, support, and network route to YouTube; no particular server size or monthly cost is established here.

First decide what your M3U file represents

Ordinary M3U source list

A conventional M3U playlist is a list of media inputs for a player or encoder. FFmpeg reads the listed source media and produces a live encoded feed; YouTube receives that feed through an ingest protocol. You do not simply upload an arbitrary M3U file to YouTube and expect it to play as a live stream.

Inspect the file in a text editor. Entries might be local media paths or URLs, with optional metadata lines. Confirm every entry is valid from the server itself. If the playlist relies on a format or feature FFmpeg does not accept as a concat-style input, use an input method suited to that playlist’s actual syntax rather than assuming every M3U works identically. The FFmpeg documentation is the place to verify the options supported by your installed build.

YouTube HLS media playlist

YouTube also uses the term “media playlist” for an HLS protocol file that describes media segments being sent to YouTube. This is not the same as an M3U list of complete source videos. YouTube’s HLS ingest guide requires the playlist filename to end in .m3u or .m3u8, a sequence number beginning at zero and increasing monotonically, and no more than five outstanding segments. It also recommends retaining a few acknowledged segments in each playlist. Those requirements apply to the HLS ingest workflow; the extension alone does not make an ordinary source list a valid HLS feed. See YouTube HLS ingestion documentation.

Choose YouTube’s ingest protocol

YouTube documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH as ingest options. The right choice depends on the stream’s codecs, latency needs, and the protocol selected for the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

Protocol Documented codec support Encryption and workflow notes
RTMP H.264 Supports normal through ultra-low latency; not the encrypted option listed in YouTube’s comparison.
RTMPS H.264 RTMP over an SSL connection. YouTube documents the RTMPS endpoint on port 443 and notes that correct SNI hostname handling matters for authentication.
HLS H.264 and HEVC Encrypted, segment-based ingest; typically higher latency than RTMP-family workflows. Requires the HLS segment and playlist workflow.
DASH H.264 and VP9 Encrypted, segment-based ingest; typically higher latency than RTMP-family workflows.

These are YouTube’s documented protocol and codec distinctions, not a promise that every combination is available for every account or stream. Check the current protocol comparison and the options presented for your stream: YouTube Live Streaming Ingestion Protocol Comparison. For a common file-based stream using H.264, RTMPS is a reasonable secure option to investigate, not a universal requirement.

Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream using the current interface. Confirm that the stream is configured for the ingest protocol you plan to use.
  2. Copy the stream’s ingest details from YouTube. Use the URL and stream key (also called a stream name in API documentation) supplied for that stream. Do not reuse an endpoint copied from an unrelated tutorial: YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says the correct endpoint and path matter.
  3. Keep the key private. Treat it as a password. Do not commit it to a public repository, paste it into a public script or screenshot, or share it in logs or support requests. YouTube’s LiveStreams API describes ingestion addresses and stream-name fields, including primary and backup addresses: LiveStreams API reference.
  4. Enter the values in your encoder. Depending on the interface, the server URL and stream key may be separate fields or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the format YouTube and your encoder specify; for RTMPS, use the actual RTMPS endpoint and path shown for the stream.

Keep secrets out of command history where possible. A protected configuration file or service-manager environment setting with restrictive permissions is safer than embedding the key in a script that may be shared. If a key is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live-stream controls.

Prepare and test the M3U-to-YouTube workflow

Check the input before making it continuous

  1. Review the playlist entries. Verify ordering, file paths, URL availability, and whether each item has video, audio, or both. Remove broken entries and confirm that the server can read the media under the account that will run the service.
  2. Check whether the playlist repeats. A one-pass playlist ending is not automatically a 24/7 loop. Use an FFmpeg input/playlist workflow that explicitly repeats the content, or arrange for a supervisor to restart the encoder when a completed playlist should begin again. Test the intended behavior rather than assuming the M3U itself loops.
  3. Choose output encoding deliberately. Match the video and audio codecs to the selected YouTube ingest protocol and the stream settings. If copying source streams without re-encoding, verify that their codecs, timestamps, and stream properties are suitable for the target; otherwise transcode and allow for the CPU load.
  4. Set and verify output parameters in the encoder. Resolution, frame rate, video and audio bitrate, keyframe interval, audio presence, and pixel format affect compatibility and quality. The supplied official documentation here does not establish universal numeric values for these settings, so do not copy guessed numbers: follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the configuration shown for your stream.
  5. Run a short test first. Start the encoder against a private or otherwise appropriate test stream, check the YouTube preview and stream health, and confirm that audio and video remain synchronized. Review FFmpeg output for missing files, unsupported input, protocol errors, or encoder overload before leaving it unattended.

There is no safe one-command example for every M3U: syntax, audio presence, source codecs, playlist behavior, FFmpeg build options, and YouTube’s selected ingest settings all change the correct command. Confirm the installed FFmpeg options against its documentation rather than pasting an unverified command into a production server.

Keep the Linux process running and observable

A shell session alone is not a robust 24/7 service. Run the encoder under a service manager such as systemd or a container supervisor, configured to restart after an unexpected exit. Make sure the restart policy does not conceal a persistent failure by restarting endlessly without alerting you.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Logs: Capture FFmpeg’s standard output and error output with timestamps and configure log rotation or retention so logs do not fill the disk.
  • Restart behavior: Set a restart policy and a sensible delay. Decide whether a normally completed playlist should restart immediately, wait, or stop; that is different from recovering from a crash.
  • Disk and source monitoring: Alert on low disk space, inaccessible media, expired URLs, or a playlist that no longer advances.
  • Capacity and network monitoring: Watch CPU use when transcoding and the sustained outbound network rate. A stream can fail even while the encoder process remains alive if the host loses connectivity or cannot keep up.
  • YouTube monitoring: Check Live Control Room preview and stream health after launch and after interruptions. Confirm that the broadcast is actually reaching YouTube rather than relying only on a running process.

YouTube’s RTMPS documentation notes that the endpoint, port 443, and SNI hostname handling are relevant to connection and authentication. If RTMPS fails, compare the configured URL and path with the current YouTube-provided endpoint and check whether the host’s network permits the required outbound connection: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube receives no video Wrong ingest URL or protocol, incorrect stream key, blocked outbound access, or encoder input failure. Re-copy the endpoint and key from the current stream settings; verify protocol selection, server connectivity, and FFmpeg logs. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
RTMPS connection or authentication fails Incorrect RTMPS endpoint/path, port or network issue, or SNI hostname handling problem. Use the stream’s YouTube-provided RTMPS endpoint, check outbound access to port 443, and ensure the client preserves the expected hostname for TLS/SNI.
Playlist stops after one pass The selected input workflow processes entries once and does not repeat them. Configure explicit repeat behavior or have the service restart a successfully completed playlist according to your intended schedule.
One or more items are skipped Missing local files, inaccessible URLs, unsupported input, or path resolution differences. Test each entry as the service account on the server; correct paths and permissions, then inspect FFmpeg’s input errors.
Video works but audio is absent A source has no audio, audio mapping is wrong, or the output configuration does not provide the audio YouTube expects. Inspect each source’s streams, set an intentional audio strategy for silent items, and validate the encoded preview before relying on the loop.
Stream health degrades or video stutters Insufficient CPU for transcoding, inconsistent source timing, or inadequate network capacity. Check encoder load and outbound throughput; reduce the workload or adjust encoding only after consulting current YouTube settings and testing again.
The process is running but YouTube is offline The encoder may be stalled, disconnected, or no longer sending valid media. Inspect recent logs, process activity, network state, and YouTube stream health; restart only after correcting the cause.
Disk fills over time Unbounded logs, downloaded media, or temporary segment files. Configure log rotation and cleanup for generated files, and monitor free space. For an HLS workflow, manage segment retention deliberately.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to manage a Linux host and an encoder process, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It does not stream from a camera and is for YouTube only.
