Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Set your FFmpeg output to YouTube’s recommended live-stream video bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate you are sending—not for how long the stream runs. For H.264, common targets are 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, and 8 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, no longer than four seconds. Test the stream on your actual connection before leaving it live.
Choose the bitrate for your input format
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended live-stream video ingestion bitrates, not totals including audio. Match the row to the codec, resolution and frame rate FFmpeg will send. These are encoder-input recommendations; YouTube’s separate upload-video bitrate guidance is for uploaded prerecorded videos and is not interchangeable.

The table reflects YouTube Help’s live-encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026; the page does not state a publication year. A minimum is not the target to choose automatically: use the recommended value if your connection and encoder can sustain it. If they cannot, reduce resolution or frame rate and select the corresponding row rather than assuming a lower bitrate will preserve the same picture quality.
Does an always-on stream need a different bitrate?
No duration-based adjustment is specified in YouTube’s live encoder guidance. A 24/7 stream uses the same recommended input rate as a shorter stream with the same codec, resolution and frame rate. What changes is the operational importance of stable upload capacity: a rate that intermittently exceeds what the connection can deliver can starve the incoming video, even if it matches YouTube’s recommendation on paper.

Set the accompanying encoder options
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
- Keyframes: use a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s Live API health guidance says to use a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS for live streaming. Use the ingest address and stream key provided in YouTube Studio; do not invent an endpoint. RTMPS is RTMP carried through SSL/TLS, and Google’s developer guidance specifies port 443 for integrations using that protocol.
- Supported video choices: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm your particular FFmpeg build and encoder support the codec you intend to send.
- Audio, if included: YouTube’s advanced-setting recommendations include AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo audio. These are audio settings, separate from the video bitrate table.
Apply the setting in FFmpeg without guessing at flags
The bitrate target and encoder behavior are separate things. YouTube specifies the output behavior it recommends, but its guidance does not document FFmpeg command-line syntax. FFmpeg option support and behavior depend on the installed version and the selected video encoder. In particular, a generic video-bitrate setting by itself does not establish that the encoder is operating in CBR or that its peak rate and buffer behavior meet the intended configuration. Do not copy an unverified command or assume one set of flags applies to every FFmpeg build.
- Identify your build and encoder. Check the installed FFmpeg version and the available encoders, then identify the exact encoder the command will use (for example, a software or hardware implementation). Consult documentation matching that version and encoder.
- Set the target output format. Choose the codec, resolution and frame rate you will actually send, then use the matching recommended rate in the table. Verify in the matching FFmpeg documentation how that encoder configures CBR and any associated rate-control or buffer settings.
- Configure keyframes. Set a two-second interval using the syntax documented for that encoder and verify that the resulting GOP is not longer than four seconds. YouTube’s health diagnostics can also flag long or overly short GOPs and open GOPs.
- Use YouTube’s stream details. In YouTube Studio, use the ingest address and stream key for the broadcast. Keep the stream key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Test and inspect the result. Run a representative test with audio and motion similar to the intended stream. Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages before relying on it for continuous broadcasting.
This approach is deliberately version-specific: without the FFmpeg version and selected encoder, an exact flag sequence cannot be verified reliably. Avoid treating a command copied from another setup as proof that your stream is CBR-compliant.

Test upload capacity and monitor stream health
Choose a quality your internet connection can sustain, not merely the highest row your encoder can produce. YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the actual content, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. For an always-on stream, include the busiest parts of your normal network use in the test if other people or devices share the connection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the output codec, frame rate, resolution, bitrate and keyframe interval in the encoder configuration.
- Send a test stream to YouTube and let it run long enough to expose interruptions or inconsistent upload capacity.
- Inspect the stream health panel in YouTube Studio. If the stream is not healthy, use the specific diagnostic rather than changing several encoder settings at once.
- If the recommended rate cannot be sustained reliably, step down to a lower resolution or frame rate and test the matching bitrate again.
YouTube’s Live API represents whether data is arriving with a stream state such as active, and health values include good, ok, bad and noData. Those fields are mainly useful to integrations; most creators should start with Studio’s stream health display. The API also treats resolution and frame rate as separate properties; if automatic detection is requested, both properties must be set to variable.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and ingest warnings
| Diagnostic or symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Bitrate too high | Configured video rate and the rate YouTube is actually receiving | Check encoder rate control and upload stability. If the connection cannot sustain the target, lower resolution or frame rate and retest at that row’s recommendation. |
| Bitrate too low | Output rate against the recommended value for the codec, resolution and frame rate | Correct an unexpectedly low setting if the connection can sustain the recommendation; otherwise choose a lower output format and test it. |
| Long or overly short GOP; open GOP | Keyframe interval and whether the encoder is producing a closed GOP | Use the encoder-specific documentation to set a two-second interval, keep it at or below four seconds, and check the GOP structure. |
| Video ingestion starvation | Whether YouTube is receiving video consistently | Check upload interruptions, encoder load and actual stream health; reduce the output format if sustained delivery is not possible. |
| Unsupported codec | The codec actually selected by the FFmpeg build and YouTube’s supported live codecs | Select a supported codec and confirm the chosen encoder implementation is available in the installed build. |
| Missing audio or video; multiple audio/video streams | Input mapping and the streams present in the outgoing broadcast | Inspect the FFmpeg input and output stream selection, then test again with the intended audio and video. |
| Backup-stream settings mismatch | Whether primary and backup streams use matching settings | Compare the configurations and align the backup settings with the primary stream. |
These are among the issues covered by YouTube’s live-stream health diagnostics. The Google for Developers configuration-issues page was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.
