How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream from a Cloud Server with Limited Bandwidth

A practical guide to looping authorized video from a cloud VM to YouTube with FFmpeg, including bitrate choices, transfer estimates, testing, and recovery planning.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run FFmpeg on an always-on cloud VM, loop a video you have permission to stream, and send one RTMPS feed to YouTube. Keep the encoded bitrate below the VM’s reliable outbound capacity, allow headroom for network variation, and test the setup before relying on it around the clock. The main ongoing cost to check is outbound data transfer: even a modest bitrate accumulates quickly.

What a cloud-based 24/7 stream needs

A cloud VM takes over the jobs that a computer running at home would otherwise handle: it reads the source, encodes or passes through the video, and continuously uploads a live feed to YouTube. The VM must remain running, have access to the source media, and sustain the stream’s outbound traffic for as long as you broadcast.

  • A continuous source: for this workflow, a prerecorded video or playlist that you have the rights and permissions to stream.
  • An always-on VM: with enough CPU or GPU capacity for the chosen encoding settings, plus storage or access to the media file.
  • FFmpeg: configured to produce a stream YouTube accepts and to publish to the current ingestion endpoint.
  • A reliable outbound network: capable of sustaining the selected bitrate, with capacity left over for fluctuations and protocol overhead.
  • Operational safeguards: a process restart strategy, monitoring, and a way to notice a failed stream. These depend on your VM provider and operating system; YouTube does not configure them for you.

This guide focuses on a prerecorded loop. A camera or other real-time source needs to remain continuously available to the encoder instead. In either case, only broadcast material for which you have the necessary rights and permissions.

Choose settings that fit your bandwidth

Start with the quality you need, then choose the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together. A higher resolution or frame rate generally requires more upload capacity. Lowering either is a practical way to reduce the rate; do not assume a cloud VM’s advertised network capacity is a safe sustained bitrate.

YouTube’s H.264 bitrate guidance

YouTube Help’s encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026, include the following H.264 settings. They are guidance for encoder configuration, not a guarantee that a particular VM can sustain the upload rate or that every viewer will receive that playback quality.

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
360p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 3 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

YouTube lists separate bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Use the guidance for the codec actually being sent; do not apply the H.264 figures to another codec by assumption. For a constrained VM connection, a lower resolution or frame rate may be more dependable than aiming for a high-quality setting at the edge of the available bandwidth.

  • Keyframes: set a two-second interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3 are supported choices in YouTube’s guidance.
  • Ingest: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.

YouTube transcodes an incoming stream into multiple playback formats. That helps serve viewers on different devices and connections, but it does not reduce the bandwidth your VM uses to upload the one incoming feed.

Estimate transfer before choosing a VM

A stream uploads continuously, so its data use accumulates every hour. A useful decimal planning estimate is:

Daily transfer in GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 10.8

Encoded bitrate Approximate transfer per day Approximate transfer over 30 days
3 Mbps 32.4 GB 972 GB
6 Mbps 64.8 GB 1,944 GB

These are arithmetic estimates, not provider measurements; actual use can differ because of protocol overhead and bitrate variation. Before selecting a VM, check whether its provider counts outbound traffic to YouTube, what transfer allowance is included, the charge or behavior after that allowance, any sustained-network restrictions, and the VM’s ability to encode your chosen settings. VM runtime, storage, transfer, and monitoring can all affect the total cost. Provider prices and allowances vary and are not established here, so confirm current terms directly with the provider.

Prepare the cloud VM and YouTube stream

  1. Choose your source and settings. Confirm that the media is authorized for continuous streaming. Decide on a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that fit both YouTube’s published guidance and the VM’s tested network and compute capacity.
  2. Create an always-on VM and install FFmpeg. Make the source file readable from the VM. Check that the selected VM can encode at the intended settings if you are encoding there; pre-encoded media can reduce live compute work, but it does not remove the outgoing stream transfer.
  3. Configure the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Retrieve the current ingestion endpoint and stream key from your channel’s own stream setup. YouTube’s endpoint and key are configuration details to obtain there, not values to copy from an example. Keep the key private: do not expose it in a public repository, logs, or shell history.
  4. Build the FFmpeg command for your input and installed build. The command below illustrates the shape of a looped-file RTMPS publish. It is not a tested, ready-to-run command. Replace the placeholders with the current YouTube ingestion details and set output parameters appropriate to your media, YouTube’s requirements, and the FFmpeg build on your VM.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/authorized-video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -b:v 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M
  -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv 'rtmps://<youtube-ingest-endpoint>/<stream-key>'

In this example, -re paces file reading at its native rate, and -stream_loop -1 requests an indefinite loop. The example’s 3 Mbps video bitrate and GOP value are illustrative, not suitable defaults for every resolution or frame rate. A two-second keyframe interval means the GOP length must match the output frame rate—for example, 60 frames at 30 fps. Set the output frame rate and resolution deliberately if the input does not already match your target. Validate the pixel format, audio mapping, and output behavior with your own file; media with audio that ends before video, or an unusual stream layout, may need different handling.

FFmpeg’s command-line and protocol documentation describe file pacing and RTMP/RTMPS publishing. An AWS example demonstrates a looped-file FFmpeg pattern for AWS IVS, but its destination settings are for IVS; do not use that destination unchanged for YouTube. Verify the command against the installed FFmpeg build and the current settings shown in YouTube Live Control Room.

  1. Run a short test before going public. Use a private or unlisted test, confirm that YouTube receives the feed and inspect the ingest preview and stream-health indicators. Test representative motion and audio, not just a static opening frame.
  2. Set up persistence and monitoring for your environment. Arrange a process supervisor or equivalent restart method, logs, health checks, and alerts appropriate to your operating system and cloud provider. Test what happens if FFmpeg exits, the VM reboots, or the network drops. Restart behavior and alerting are deployment work; they are not automatic consequences of sending a YouTube stream.
  3. Watch both stream health and transfer use. Check for disconnects, encoder overload, and unexpected network use after the test and during operation. Confirm the provider’s current billing rules and sustained-use policy before leaving the stream running continuously.

Troubleshooting a cloud stream

Symptom Likely area to check Practical fix
YouTube does not receive the stream Ingestion endpoint, stream key, output protocol, or encoder command Retrieve the current endpoint and key from Live Control Room, check that the key has not been mistyped or exposed, and confirm that the FFmpeg output is configured for RTMPS/FLV as intended.
Stream-health warnings or repeated disconnects Unstable outbound capacity, a bitrate too close to the VM’s sustainable throughput, or a VM/network interruption Test at a lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate; leave more network headroom; and inspect VM and network logs around the interruption.
Video stutters or the encoder falls behind Insufficient compute for live encoding, unsuitable output settings, or input-processing issues Check VM CPU/GPU load and FFmpeg output. Reduce encoding demands or use media prepared at the target format, then test again. Pre-encoding does not reduce stream transfer.
Audio disappears or the loop breaks at a boundary Input audio/video streams have different durations or an unusual layout Inspect the file’s streams and test a complete loop, including the transition. Adjust audio mapping or looping behavior for that file rather than assuming one command fits every input.
Stream stops after an FFmpeg or VM failure No tested supervisor or restart handling Configure and test process supervision and VM startup behavior in the chosen environment, and add a health check or alert so a stopped broadcast is noticed.
Unexpected cloud charges or transfer exhaustion Outbound traffic accounting, allowance limits, or sustained-use terms Compare observed transfer with the bitrate-based estimate and check the provider’s current allowance, overage handling, and network policy.

Or let it run in the cloud

Copyright and channel-policy checks

A technically stable loop is not automatically authorized or eligible for monetization. Use video and audio you own or have permission to broadcast, and check the applicable YouTube copyright and channel policies before scheduling continuous playback. Do not assume that a video being available online means it can be rebroadcast. A 24/7 loop also does not itself establish that a channel meets any YouTube monetization requirement.
