If your laptop is running the streaming software and sending the video to YouTube, shutting it down stops that feed. The livestream can keep going only if another powered device or cloud service continues sending video independently.
What happens when you shut down the laptop?
YouTube Live needs a device or service to send it a live video feed. In an encoder setup, you enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder; that encoder sends the video. So if the laptop is running the encoder, shutting it down interrupts the feed. This is the practical consequence of YouTube’s documented workflow, rather than a separate YouTube rule specifically about laptop shutdown.

YouTube’s instruction for ending an encoder-based stream is: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” For scheduled streams, YouTube also says to click “End Stream.” YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

A stream archive is not the same as a continuing live feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not mean the stream stays live after the encoder stops sending video.

When can the stream continue with the laptop off?
It can continue if a different setup has the video source, stream connection, power, and network access needed to keep sending the feed. Merely leaving a YouTube watch page or Studio dashboard open on another device does not send video to the stream.

YouTube lists mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming as broad ways to go live. Its guidance describes encoders as useful for gameplay, overlays, and hardware such as microphones and cameras, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. Those options do not by themselves guarantee that a stream will survive a laptop shutdown; the video source and the sending device must continue operating. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.

How to check whether your setup will stay live
- Identify the device supplying the feed. Find the app or encoder that has YouTube’s server URL and stream key. YouTube’s settings guide explains that the stream key connects an encoder to the stream. YouTube Help: Stream settings.
- Check what happens when that device stops. If the laptop is the encoder, closing the lid, putting it to sleep, disconnecting its network, or shutting it down can stop its ability to send video. Do not assume another open YouTube page will take over.
- For an independent setup, verify every dependency. Confirm the source, encoder or streaming service, power, and network can all continue without the laptop. If any required component depends on the laptop, the feed is not independent of it.
- End the stream deliberately when you want it to stop. For an encoder stream, stop sending content from the encoder; for a scheduled stream, follow YouTube’s instructions to click “End Stream” as well.
What YouTube does not guarantee about a dropped feed
YouTube’s documented encoder workflow does not establish one universal grace period or reconnection behavior for every stream when a laptop shuts down, loses power, sleeps, crashes, or loses network access. Do not count on a particular number of minutes before YouTube ends a disconnected stream, or assume it will automatically resume. The outcome can depend on the streaming method and which device is still supplying the feed.
