You can loop a playlist on YouTube from a Windows PC by enabling YouTube Live, preparing compatible media, and sending it to YouTube with FFmpeg. The PC, internet connection, and FFmpeg process must stay running; a continuous stream also needs monitoring and a recovery plan. The example below is a starting point, not a tested universal command, so first run it privately or unlisted and verify the stream in YouTube Studio.
Before you start
- YouTube Live access: Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this ahead of your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Windows PC that can stay on: It needs stable power, sustained upload capacity, enough processing headroom for encoding, and storage if you also intend to record locally.
- FFmpeg: Install a build from a source you trust. Confirm it includes the input demuxer, encoder, RTMPS output support, and FLV muxer you intend to use. The appropriate Windows build provider depends on your own trust requirements; no specific third-party provider is prescribed here.
- Content rights: You need the rights or permissions necessary to stream every video and audio track in the playlist. Putting existing material into a loop does not grant rebroadcast rights.
Enable YouTube Live and get a stream key
- In YouTube Studio, start creating or scheduling a live stream and choose the encoder workflow. Follow any channel verification or live-access prompts, allowing up to 24 hours for initial activation.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. Use the exact destination and key arrangement YouTube displays for that stream and protocol.
- Keep the key private: it is the credential that lets your encoder send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it in a screenshot, command shared publicly, or support post. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. Use the RTMPS server details shown in Live Control Room when available; see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Prepare the playlist file
Create a text list in playback order
Make a UTF-8 text file such as C:streamsplaylist.txt. Put one file entry per line, in the order you want the videos to play:
file 'C:/streams/video-01.mp4'
file 'C:/streams/video-02.mp4'
Forward slashes in these example paths are accepted by FFmpeg on Windows. If a filename or path contains an apostrophe or unusual characters, it needs correct escaping; verify that FFmpeg can read the list before connecting to YouTube. The concat demuxer reads the listed files in order. Its stream-copy mode requires matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and inaccurate duration metadata or mismatched media can cause gaps or artifacts at clip boundaries. A list that concatenates successfully is not necessarily seamless.

Choose how to handle mismatched files
- Use the concat demuxer with re-encoding: This is the pattern in the example command below. It gives you control over output encoding, but encoding consumes CPU or GPU resources.
- Stream-copy with
-c copy: This avoids re-encoding, but use it only after confirming all playlist files are compatible with each other and their existing codec parameters fit YouTube’s accepted input settings. It offers less control over output settings. - Use the concat filter: When source clips are incompatible, a filter-based workflow can normalize them into a common output, at the cost of more complex setup and encoding. See the FFmpeg FAQ for the distinction between concat approaches and the FFmpeg documentation for demuxer details.
Choose output settings for your upload connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its recommended H.264 bitrate ranges are:
| Output example | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6–17 Mbps |
These are YouTube input recommendations, not a promise about what quality viewers will receive. Select a bitrate your streaming PC can sustain over the actual outbound connection. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; a speed test should represent sustained upload available to that PC, not just a headline download rate. When using a backup encoder, YouTube’s streaming tips recommend accounting for primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%. See encoder settings and streaming tips.

Start FFmpeg with a looping playlist
For compatible H.264/AAC source material where you want FFmpeg to re-encode the output, this is an illustrative command pattern:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"
Replace playlist.txt with the path to your list if you are not running the command from its directory. Replace the example destination with the exact RTMPS server URL and stream-key arrangement shown in Live Control Room. Do not share the real destination and key publicly.

The bitrate, maximum rate, and buffer values shown are examples, not universal settings.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP. It represents a two-second keyframe interval only if the encoded frame rate is 30 fps; match GOP length to your actual frame rate and YouTube’s settings.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100sets AAC audio with example bitrate and sample rate. Confirm the result suits your source and stream.-f flvselects the output container commonly used for RTMP-style streaming. The installed build must support the selected output protocol and muxer.
This command is not a tested Windows configuration or a universal YouTube preset. Adjust resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio to match the media, YouTube settings, and available upload. If the source clips do not have compatible streams, re-encoding may still require preprocessing or a filter workflow to avoid bad transitions. For current values and encoder checks, consult YouTube’s encoder settings page.
Test before making the stream public
- Start with a private or unlisted stream in Live Control Room rather than launching a long public broadcast immediately.
- Check the preview for picture, motion, sound, clipping, and clip-boundary gaps. Confirm that the intended viewer page is accessible with the privacy setting you chose.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and confirm the stream is arriving at the intended resolution and frame rate.
- If recording or archiving locally, check that the output file is being created and growing. Monitor available disk space before any extended run.
- Only switch to a public continuous stream after the test behaves as expected. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; its guidance warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
Keep the stream running safely
A single FFmpeg process is not a complete 24/7 operations plan. The Windows machine, power, network path, and FFmpeg process all have to remain available. YouTube says connectivity disruption can break a stream, so plan for monitoring and recovery rather than assuming a dropped feed will resume on its own.

- Prevent Windows sleep or hibernation during the broadcast, and ensure updates or scheduled restarts will not interrupt the machine unexpectedly.
- Monitor FFmpeg process health, YouTube stream health, sustained upload, temperature or encoding load, and disk space. Arrange a way to notice failures if you are not watching the screen.
- Decide in advance how you will restart the encoder and restore the feed after a PC, network, or YouTube-side interruption. A supervised process or a person on call may be needed; test the recovery steps before relying on them.
- An uninterruptible power supply for the PC and router can help bridge brief power interruptions, but it cannot provide internet service or guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
- Plan archive behavior separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on a single longer broadcast being saved as one complete archive. If a complete archive matters, use shorter sessions or a separately verified recording workflow. See YouTube’s encoder-stream guidance.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no video | Incorrect server URL or key, wrong protocol, or missing output support in the FFmpeg build. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify RTMPS destination syntax, and check that FFmpeg supports RTMPS and FLV output. |
| FFmpeg reports that it cannot open the playlist or a clip | Wrong working directory, invalid list path, malformed quoting, or a path that cannot be parsed. | Use a full path to the playlist and media files, check the list’s encoding and line format, and test filenames containing apostrophes or unusual characters separately. |
| Clip changes have glitches, black frames, or audio gaps | Different stream parameters, timestamps, frame rates, audio formats, or duration metadata. | Inspect the source files. Normalize incompatible clips before concatenation or use a concat-filter re-encoding workflow; do not assume the demuxer guarantees seamless transitions. |
| Stream health is poor or the feed drops | Insufficient sustained upload, network instability, or encoding overload. | Reduce output bitrate or resolution, preserve upload headroom, check the PC’s sustained outbound capacity, and monitor the encoder and network. Test the recovery procedure. |
| FFmpeg fails to start the H.264 encoder | The installed build may not include libx264. |
Check the build’s available encoders and use a build that supports the selected encoder, or choose an available compatible encoder and adjust settings accordingly. |
| The archived video is incomplete or absent after a very long run | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic-archive duration guidance. | Keep archive-dependent sessions under 12 hours or use a separately verified recording method. |
