Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You can run a study stream from Ubuntu by building a simple scene in OBS Studio, connecting OBS to a YouTube Live broadcast with the current stream details from YouTube Studio, and keeping the Ubuntu computer online while it encodes. The steps below cover setup, settings, testing, and practical safeguards. “24/7” is an operating goal, not a guarantee: a local OBS setup can still be interrupted by power, network, computer, software, or YouTube problems.
Before you start
- YouTube Live access: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An Ubuntu computer that can encode your scene: OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X window system or Wayland for Linux/Unix. Meeting those baseline requirements does not guarantee the computer can encode your chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene continuously. See OBS system requirements.
- Stable upload capacity: The stream must be uploaded continuously. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and the actual broadcast rather than assuming a connection can sustain a chosen bitrate.
- Content you have rights to use: Use visuals and audio you own, have permission to use, or are otherwise legally entitled to stream. A looping format does not exempt content from copyright or platform rules.
Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu
OBS’s Linux installation instructions say Ubuntu 18.04 or newer can use the OBS Studio PPA and apt package. The page was dated 2021-08-26, so check the current OBS Linux installation page before running package commands; repository and package instructions can change.

Build a simple study scene
Keep the scene restrained so it is easier to encode and test. You might use a static study visual, a session clock, or a session indicator. Add only audio that is necessary and that you have rights to broadcast. These are design choices, not required OBS settings.

In OBS, create a scene for the study stream.
-
Add the visual sources the scene needs, such as an image or a permitted video source. Check how the composition appears in the OBS preview at the output resolution you plan to stream.
-
Add audio only if needed. Check the mixer meters while representative audio is playing; avoid leaving unlicensed music or other material in the broadcast.
-
Preview transitions and any loop point that viewers will encounter. A scene that appears still can still produce audio, animation, or encoding load, so test the real arrangement rather than an empty preview.

Use RTMPS when YouTube Studio and OBS offer it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension of RTMP. Google’s technical documentation explains that RTMPS transports RTMP over an SSL connection and that the ingest connection requires a valid protocol, server, path, and port 443. See Google’s RTMPS delivery documentation.

Choose encoder settings that your connection and computer can sustain
YouTube’s settings depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. It supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options; availability also depends on your encoder. Review the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table before choosing values.
| Example output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | A recommendation for this resolution and frame rate, not a guarantee or universal preset. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | A recommendation for this resolution and frame rate, not a guarantee or universal preset. |
For a study scene, choose a resolution and frame rate based on the detail viewers need and what your upload connection and encoder can sustain. Higher output demands more upload capacity and encoding work. A lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate stream may be more appropriate on a constrained system. Do not copy a high-bitrate preset until a representative test shows it is stable.
-
In OBS, open Settings and check the output and video settings available in your installed version. Set the output resolution and frame rate to the level you intend to test.

Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate as a starting point, then verify against measured upload capacity and stream health. Leave enough connection headroom for normal network variation; a speed-test result is not proof of uninterrupted performance.
-
Use the simplest encoder and scene your hardware can handle reliably. CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; OBS does not establish one universal minimum CPU for continuous streaming.
Test before treating it as a continuous stream
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then checking stream health and messages. For a study stream, include the exact visual, audio, transition, and loop behavior you expect to run.

Adjust bitrate, output resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity if the test shows instability, then repeat it. Do not assume a short successful test proves weeks of uninterrupted operation.
What 24/7 operation requires—and cannot promise
With Ubuntu and OBS, the computer must remain powered, cool, connected to the internet, and running the broadcast. YouTube and OBS documentation do not promise a guaranteed 24/7 configuration or provide an end-to-end automatic recovery recipe. Plan for local and platform failures, and describe safeguards as risk reduction rather than a promise of no downtime.
- Power: Use reliable power and appropriate cooling. An optional UPS may help through some short local power interruptions, but it cannot protect against an ISP or YouTube outage.
- Network: Prefer a stable connection and monitor it remotely when possible. A wired connection can reduce some local wireless risks, but cannot eliminate upstream outages.
- Host and software: Decide how you will notice if Ubuntu or OBS stops, and how you will restart and reconnect the broadcast. Automatic restart planning should be tested on your own machine; it does not guarantee YouTube will accept a reconnect or preserve a single uninterrupted event.
- Monitoring and recovery: Have a way to check YouTube stream health and respond to alerts or a dropped stream. A separate recovery plan adds complexity and still cannot prevent failures in the platform, ISP, power, software, or hardware.
- Content and policy: A stream that stays online can still be removed or restricted if it violates YouTube rules or copyright requirements. Review the event and content, not only the technical status.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not offer live streaming | Confirm the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. Check the current YouTube Studio status and eligibility guidance. |
| OBS cannot connect to YouTube | Recheck the current server and stream key in YouTube Studio, confirm the selected protocol and connection details, and make sure the key has not been reset or exposed. Use RTMPS when offered. |
| Stream health reports insufficient bitrate or instability | Run an upload test, reduce bitrate or output demands, and repeat a representative test. The recommended bitrate is tied to codec, resolution, and frame rate; it is not a guarantee for a particular connection. |
| Video stutters or OBS reports encoding trouble | Reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or try an encoder your hardware supports. OBS requirements alone do not demonstrate that a given machine can handle the workload. |
| Viewers hear no audio or unexpected audio | Check the OBS audio mixer, selected input, and scene sources while representative audio is playing. Confirm the intended source is active and that any broadcast audio is authorized. |
| The stream stops after running for a while | Check power, cooling, Ubuntu/OBS status, internet connectivity, and YouTube stream-health messages. Restart and reconnect only after identifying whether the host or ingest connection failed; do not assume one OBS setting prevents recurrence. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want an Ubuntu computer and home connection to stay on, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
