You can alternate new podcast episodes and reruns in a YouTube Live stream by scheduling the event in YouTube Studio and building the episode rotation in an encoder or playout system. YouTube provides the scheduled watch page and the connection details; it does not provide a native episode-rotation queue. Plan the rotation, confirm your rights for every episode, then connect and preview the feed before going live.
How the rotation works
Think of the setup as two separate jobs: YouTube handles the live event, while your encoder or playout workflow decides what viewers hear and see, and when. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. Its documentation explains how to connect an encoder, but does not establish a built-in queue for alternating podcast episodes and reruns. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the platform side.

Before choosing software or hardware, verify that it can play prerecorded media to YouTube Live, schedule or repeat a playlist unattended if you need that, and insert slates or transitions. Do not assume that any encoder supports every part of that workflow.
Plan a repeatable episode schedule
Choose a cadence viewers can understand
Set a predictable slot for each new episode, then fill the remaining hours with selected reruns. For example, you might open each weekly programming block with a new episode and rotate evergreen episodes afterward. That is a programming example, not a YouTube rule; choose a cadence that matches your release schedule and rights.

Prepare the playlist and transitions
- Arrange the media in the order you want it to play, marking which entries are new episodes and which are reruns.
- Use a short slate or transition between episodes. State whether the next item is a rerun and, if useful, display its original release date.
- Check the full sequence in the playout system, including what happens at the end of the list and whether playback repeats as intended.
- Confirm the workflow can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live and can run for the length of your planned event without an operator, if unattended playback is required.
For a live host introduction or interruption, verify that your setup can switch between the playlist and the live input. A prerecorded-only rotation does not require a microphone or preamp; those are relevant only if you plan to record or host live segments.
Schedule the YouTube Live event and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, create and schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow. Give the event a title and description that accurately describe the mix of new episodes and reruns.
- Share the scheduled watch page so viewers can find the event; scheduled streams can offer a reminder option. YouTube’s encoder streaming guide explains scheduling and connecting.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into your encoder or playout system. Keep the key private: it authorizes a feed to your event.
- Review the preview in Live Control Room. Check picture, audio, slate timing, and playlist order before starting the event.
- Start the encoder feed and then start the scheduled event as prompted in Live Control Room. Confirm the public watch page shows the intended feed.
Review reused settings before each event
YouTube lets creators reuse settings from a previous stream, including metadata, stream settings, and the stream key. Before starting a reused event, check its title, description, privacy, and other copied settings so the new episode schedule is represented accurately. See YouTube’s stream reminders and reuse-settings guidance.

Rights and archive checks before you air
Clear the complete episode, not just the main recording
Confirm that you have the necessary rights for both live transmission and archived playback of every element in every episode. That includes guest releases, music, clips, and other embedded third-party material. YouTube’s Terms of Service require the necessary rights for content you exploit through the service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can interrupt or terminate a stream. A license alone may not prevent a Content ID interruption: where licensed material is matched, ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel. Review YouTube’s live-stream guidance on copyrighted content before scheduling the episode.

Keep an archive backup and mind the duration
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours and cautions that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. If the archive matters, keep the session below 12 hours and make a local recording as a backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Choose software or hardware to fit the production
YouTube describes encoders as useful for overlays and hardware inputs, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. It also says creators do not need expensive equipment to get started. A dedicated hardware encoder is therefore an option for a more involved production, not a baseline requirement. YouTube’s live streaming tips explain encoder use and production considerations.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The wrong episode or title appears: Pause the event if necessary, check playlist order, and review reused metadata in YouTube Studio before restarting.
- The encoder will not connect: Confirm that the event’s server URL and stream key were copied correctly and that the key belongs to the scheduled event. Keep the key private.
- A stream is interrupted during an episode: Check for third-party content matches. Confirm rights for the full episode and, if licensed content is involved, verify that the rights holder has allowlisted your channel.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: Check whether the session exceeded 12 hours. For archive-critical programming, keep each session below that threshold and record a local backup.
- A playlist does not continue or transition as expected: Test the entire rotation in the chosen playout system, including its end-of-list behavior and any live-input handoffs, before scheduling the public event.
