You can use a Raspberry Pi as an encoder for a YouTube study-room livestream, but the platform’s ingest guidance does not prove that any particular Pi model and software setup can sustain a 24/7 broadcast. Start with YouTube’s stream settings, choose an encoding target your board and internet connection can handle, then run a realistic test before relying on it.
1. Prepare your YouTube channel and create the stream
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, according to YouTube’s streaming tips. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch.

- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go live.
- Choose to create or schedule an encoder stream. Follow the prompts for its title, visibility, and other stream details.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into your encoder. The key connects your encoder to the correct YouTube stream; keep it private and do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast on your channel.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before starting the public broadcast.
YouTube’s instructions for encoder-based broadcasts are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. The exact Raspberry Pi encoder software and commands are not specified here: the available official guidance covers YouTube ingest and basic Pi setup, but does not establish a tested Pi implementation.

2. Choose the scene and encoding target
Use a study-room scene you have prepared, such as a still image or gently changing visual. A scene’s suitability depends on the material and rights you have; a Pi camera, animation, or particular software package is not assumed or included in this setup.

YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 encoding. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. For H.264, the recommended bitrates are 5 Mbps at 720p30 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a Raspberry Pi can encode those settings continuously. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| Target | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 5 Mbps | When the scene does not need the extra detail of 1080p and the Pi or connection needs a lighter target. |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | When the scene benefits from more detail and the encoder and connection can sustain the higher bitrate. |
The two bitrate figures are YouTube Help recommendations; the pages accessed do not state a publication year. They are not results of a Raspberry Pi performance test. Use the lowest target that gives the prepared scene the detail it needs and that your specific board can sustain in a realistic test.

3. Check upload capacity and test the full setup
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth at least 20% above the stream’s total bitrate. A shared connection may offer less bandwidth to the stream than its advertised or headline speed, so leave room for other activity rather than assuming the full connection is available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Check that the connection has upload headroom for the selected stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% margin.
- Run a realistic test using the actual scene, audio, resolution, frame rate, and intended network path. Include representative movement if the scene is animated or otherwise changes.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview and monitor stream health. A successful short test does not establish that the same setup will run continuously for a full day.
- Plan how you will respond if the Pi, encoder, power, network, or YouTube connection stops working. A backup recording or recovery plan may help, but does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
YouTube’s general recommendations are available in Streaming tips and YouTube live streaming tips. There is no documented end-to-end test here establishing which Pi model, encoder, cooling arrangement, and network combination will reliably encode 24/7.

4. Plan the archive and restart schedule
YouTube Help says that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a continuous 24/7 transmission is not a guarantee of one complete archived video. If you need a YouTube replay, plan intentional stream segments shorter than 12 hours; if you need a local copy, arrange a separate local recording and verify it works. YouTube’s wording and encoder workflow are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
5. Clear the music and visuals
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. If it identifies such material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if the content remains. Even if you have a licence, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID for the live stream to proceed. YouTube explains this in Copyright issues with live streams.

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
- Use audio and visuals you created, material that is genuinely in the public domain where applicable, or material for which you have the necessary permissions.
- Check that a licence covers livestreaming on YouTube, not just personal listening or use in an offline video.
- Ask the rights holder whether channel allowlisting is required, and resolve that before going live.
6. Assemble the Raspberry Pi setup
At minimum, plan for a Raspberry Pi board, a power supply appropriate to its model, and compatible boot storage. Raspberry Pi’s setup guide identifies power and storage as setup needs and recommends an official supply appropriate to the model family. Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation notes that models do not have onboard storage and that connectors differ by model. Check the selected board’s current requirements before buying or assembling these parts.
No specific Pi model, storage device, or encoder combination is established as capable of sustaining this 24/7 workload. A preflight test on your own equipment is necessary; do not treat YouTube’s bitrate recommendations or basic setup instructions as proof of continuous encoding reliability.
