You can run a rain-sounds YouTube livestream from OBS by sending a prepared visual and rain audio to YouTube’s Live Control Room, but a single uninterrupted broadcast lasting 24 hours is not a reliable way to preserve a replay: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use audio and visuals you own or are licensed to stream, set OBS to match your measured upload capacity, test the stream, and decide whether to run shorter sessions or use a cloud service.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions within the preceding 90 days. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
- OBS Studio, which is free and open-source. OBS help portal.
- A rain audio track and visual you have permission to livestream. Keep the original files and license or permission records.
- A stable internet connection with enough measured upload capacity for the chosen resolution and bitrate.
The cited YouTube guidance does not specify an OBS setup unique to India. Test from the actual place and network where you plan to stream; local provider performance, shared-network traffic and power continuity vary.
Configure the YouTube stream and OBS
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots. YouTube: Stream with an encoder.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream key, or use the server URL and key if configuring a custom service. Verify the destination before starting the encoder.
- Add the rain scene. In OBS, create a scene and add your visual as an Image, Media Source or other appropriate source. Add the rain track as a Media Source or audio input. For a loop, enable looping on the media source and test the transition back to the beginning; check that there is no gap, click or sudden volume change. Use a static image or gentle movement if that suits the channel, and ensure the visual itself is yours or cleared for this use.
- Set video output to a level your connection can sustain. YouTube’s current H.264 encoder guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular connection in India can sustain them. YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- Use the recommended encoder controls. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not exceeding four seconds. In OBS, choose CBR in the output settings and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Choose H.264 output when following the cited H.264 recommendations. YouTube encoder settings.
- Measure upload speed and leave headroom. Check outbound upload performance at the intended streaming location, preferably when the network is under its usual load. Do not set bitrate equal to the best speed a test briefly reports: other devices and normal variation need bandwidth too. YouTube recommends a reliable network and advises monitoring stream health. - Test privately or unlisted before a public broadcast. Start the OBS encoder and confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room. Listen for clean, continuous audio; check the image, levels, stream health and loop behavior. When ready, start the broadcast from the control room, then check the public watch page and, if enabled, your local recording. YouTube: Stream with an encoder.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local recording as a backup. Therefore, do not rely on one continuous 24-hour broadcast to produce a complete YouTube replay. If the replay matters, schedule separate sessions shorter than 12 hours and record locally when you have enough disk space. A shorter session is not a guarantee that every replay will archive successfully. YouTube: Archive live streams.
In an explanation published August 12, 2026, YouTube says public long-form videos and archived public livestreams can count toward qualified watch hours, while unarchived livestreams do not. Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
Do not assume rain recordings or visuals found online are free to use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can interrupt or terminate a broadcast. A license alone may not prevent a Content ID interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. Prefer recordings you made yourself or material with terms that explicitly cover livestreaming and any intended commercial use. Keep the source, license and permission details, and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where relevant. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams.
India-specific reliability checks
- Test upload capacity at the streaming location, not just download speed, and account for household or office devices sharing the connection.
- A wired Ethernet link from the computer to the router can remove one local Wi-Fi variable, but it cannot fix an unreliable ISP connection.
- A UPS may help through brief power interruptions if its capacity suits the computer and router load. It is not a solution for a long outage; estimate runtime for your actual equipment.
- Do a full test at the time of day you expect to stream. Network congestion and local power conditions are specific to your location.
Common problems and fixes
- OBS connects, but YouTube shows no preview: confirm the correct YouTube stream key and server settings, check that the encoder is started in OBS, and allow time for the preview to appear. Never paste the key into a public forum while asking for help.
- The stream buffers or health warnings appear: reduce bitrate or output resolution, close other high-bandwidth activity, and retest upload capacity. Keep the bitrate within what the connection can reliably deliver rather than chasing the highest possible resolution.
- Audio goes silent or the loop has a gap: check that the intended source is active and not muted in OBS’s Audio Mixer, verify the media source’s loop setting, and play through the end-to-start transition before going public.
- YouTube interrupts the live broadcast for a rights match: stop using the matched material unless you have the required rights and have addressed any Content ID allowlisting requirement with the rights holder.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter sessions when an archive matters and keep a local recording as a backup.
