A live broadcast needs YouTube Studio’s server URL and stream key plus an encoder output that YouTube can ingest. VLC documents stream-output and playlist features, but its desktop documentation does not establish a current, official VLC-to-YouTube RTMP/RTMPS setup. Check your VLC build before relying on a direct connection; if it cannot send a compatible feed, use an encoder that can.
First, choose what you mean by “loop”
- Repeat a local file in VLC: VLC plays the video again. Unless a compatible output is also sending that playback to YouTube, viewers will not see a live stream.
- Broadcast a repeating video live: YouTube Studio provides an ingest URL and stream key; an encoder sends the video and audio feed to YouTube.
- Loop an existing YouTube upload: the YouTube player’s Loop command repeats playback for a viewer. It does not create a live broadcast, scheduled event, or encoder feed.
Enable live streaming and create the YouTube event
- Confirm live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one from the Manage tab.
- If you schedule the event, use its watch-page URL to promote it; viewers can opt in to reminders.

Get the URL and stream key
In Live Control Room, copy the server or stream URL and the stream key. The encoder needs both: the URL is the destination, and the key identifies the stream. YouTube cautions, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.”
Paste each value into the matching server and key fields in your encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in screenshots, public articles, logs, or example URLs. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.

Set up VLC looping—and understand the desktop limitation
Repeat a single file
VLC’s repeat controls can replay media locally, but the exact desktop control can vary by version and interface. Confirm that repeat applies to the current item rather than the whole playlist. VLC Android documentation describes repeat mode for the current video; that is not evidence of a particular desktop interface or of a YouTube output.

Repeat a playlist
VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0 includes stream-output chains and a VLM playlist broadcast example. That example moves through multiple files and keeps the output open between items using sout-keep, but it sends the result over local HTTP. It is not a YouTube Live ingest recipe, so do not copy its HTTP destination and treat it as YouTube’s server URL.
The reviewed desktop documentation does not establish a current, official direct VLC recipe for YouTube RTMP or RTMPS. VLC’s stream-output capabilities alone do not prove that a particular desktop build exposes the compatible output, codec, and mux combination YouTube needs. Check your specific build’s output options and confirm compatibility before depending on VLC alone. If it cannot provide a compatible feed, use an encoder application that can play the source itself or receive VLC’s output; check that application’s current YouTube compatibility separately.

Match the encoder output to YouTube
Use YouTube’s ingest settings as the target when configuring a compatible encoder. The right bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; the examples below are YouTube recommendations, not universal requirements.

These figures come from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; use the recommendation for your selected codec and output format rather than applying one number to every stream. Your connection’s sustained upload capacity must support the chosen bitrate with headroom.

Test the stream before viewers arrive
- Start the encoder with representative video movement and audio. A static or silent test may not reveal issues that occur during the actual program.
- Open the Live Control Room preview and confirm picture and sound before starting the public broadcast.
- Check stream health and audio/video quality in Live Control Room. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower it or choose a more stable upload connection.
- Monitor the broadcast after it begins. A successful local VLC playback does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.

When finished, stop the encoder feed and end the stream in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an event longer than that will have the same automatic archive outcome.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC repeats locally, but no live appears: repeat mode only affects playback. Connect a compatible encoder output to YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
- YouTube shows no incoming feed: check that live streaming is enabled, the encoder is running, and the URL and key are in the correct fields. Replace the key if it may have been exposed.
- The key or URL works in another encoder but not VLC: the desktop VLC documentation cited here does not establish a direct YouTube ingest workflow. Verify output, codec, and mux support in your exact VLC build or use a separately verified compatible encoder.
- Preview is unstable or stream health is poor: test with representative movement and audio, check the selected codec-specific bitrate, and ensure upload capacity can sustain it.
- The playlist has gaps or closes between files: local playlist broadcast behavior depends on the output pipeline. VideoLAN’s documented
sout-keepexample is for its local HTTP playlist broadcast, not proof of YouTube compatibility.
