To run a 24/7 rain sounds livestream with a cloud server and OBS, put the rain audio and visuals on a server that stays online, run OBS there to encode the scene, and send the stream to YouTube using the current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Your home computer can then be off—but the server, network route, OBS process, and content rights all need to hold up continuously.
What the setup does—and what it requires
In this arrangement, the cloud server stores and plays your prerecorded rain recording and visual; OBS combines them into a live video stream and sends it to YouTube. YouTube receives it as a live broadcast, even though the underlying media is prerecorded. The server replaces your home computer as the machine that must stay running.

There is no single universally prescribed cloud operating-system image, server size, or headless-display recipe established for this workflow. Choose a host based on the actual OBS workload and its sustained networking, and confirm the chosen operating system and display setup can run OBS reliably before committing to a long broadcast.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream.
- Rain audio and visuals you created or have permission to use for the live stream and any archived copy.
- A cloud host with sufficient CPU, storage, and continuous outbound network capacity for your OBS settings.
- OBS installed and configured on that host, plus the current YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key.
Check YouTube eligibility and content rights first
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. Check the channel and Live Control Room before building the setup; a server cannot bypass a channel restriction. YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility guidance describes these requirements.

Use rain sounds and visuals you have cleared
Use recordings and images you made yourself or have permission to livestream and, if you keep an archive, to retain in that archive. Keep the relevant license records. YouTube’s livestream terms make the content provider responsible for necessary rights, including music licensing rights. YouTube’s terms set out that responsibility.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects a match. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says licensed content can still be stopped if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. Choose a cloud server for the workload
OBS must encode your scene and transmit it continuously. Select a cloud host by checking these workload factors, rather than assuming that any virtual server will handle the stream:
- CPU capacity: enough sustained processing for the OBS encoder and output settings you intend to use.
- Outbound bandwidth and transfer policy: enough capacity for the total stream bitrate, with room for variation; check transfer allowances, throttling, and fair-use terms.
- Network route and region: assess the provider’s network reliability for a continuous connection to YouTube’s ingest service.
- Storage: enough space for the source recordings and any other media used by OBS.
- Maintenance and recovery: remote access, restart behavior, and a practical way to inspect OBS if it stops or needs attention.
YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate and warns that network disruptions can break a stream. For a cloud host, apply that guidance to the server’s available outbound capacity, not your home internet connection. It is guidance, not a guarantee against interruption. No specific host, server size, or current VPS price is established here. Compare providers’ current terms and test the configuration you intend to use; do not treat a generic size label as proof that OBS will encode your scene reliably.
Prepare the rain scene in OBS
- Put the media on the server. Store the rain audio and visual files where OBS can access them after a restart. Avoid relying on a file located only on your personal computer.
- Create a simple scene. Add the visual and audio sources to a scene, then confirm the audio is present and the picture does not unexpectedly turn black or stop when the media reaches its end. Set up a loop using the source’s available playback controls and test it through more than one repeat.
- Check the encoding workload. Select output settings your server can sustain; monitor the server and OBS during a test. OBS’s YouTube service configuration is a useful reference, but actual recommended settings depend on resolution and encoder. Follow the current guidance in YouTube Live Control Room rather than treating a static repository value as universal.
- Keep OBS and its media available after a restart. Configure your server’s own startup and maintenance approach so a reboot does not leave the stream unattended. The exact procedure depends on the operating system and display environment; there is no universally validated headless-OBS recipe in this guide.
Connect OBS to YouTube using RTMPS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the channel and retrieve the current stream’s RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. Use the issued details, not an old URL copied from a tutorial.
- In OBS, select YouTube RTMPS as the service if available. If you configure the server manually, enter the exact RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room, then enter the matching stream key.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a screenshot, public configuration, or command output; limit access to the server and OBS settings.
- Start a private or unlisted test stream and inspect YouTube’s preview. Confirm the video, audio level, and playback loop work as intended before making the broadcast public.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP secured with TLS/SSL. OBS’s maintained service configuration lists YouTube RTMPS endpoints and recommendations, but Live Control Room is the authority for the ingest details issued to your channel. See OBS’s service configuration and YouTube’s stream setup guidance.

Test continuity before relying on a 24/7 broadcast
A successful start is not proof the stream will keep running unattended. Use a test period to check both media playback and recovery behavior:
- Verify the audio remains audible and the visual remains intentional across multiple loops.
- Watch OBS and YouTube’s preview for connection interruptions or encoding warnings.
- Confirm that OBS returns to a usable state after a planned server restart, and check whether you need to restart the broadcast manually.
- Check the host’s actual outbound usage and provider limits against the bitrate you selected.
- Keep a way to access the server remotely if OBS, the source media, or the connection needs attention.
These are operational checks, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Network disruptions can break a live stream, so plan how you will identify and recover from a failed connection.

Understand copyright, monetization, and ads
A rain loop is not automatically eligible for monetization
YouTube’s monetization policy expects original, authentic content and says highly repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible. Its policy page notes a July 15, 2025 clarification and the use of “inauthentic content” for this policy area. A long loop by itself does not establish that a channel or stream qualifies. Troubleshooting common failures
