For multistreaming a live program to YouTube and other platforms, choose between a local encoder that sends separate outputs and a cloud relay that distributes one feed. A browser studio can combine multistreaming with a hosted production workflow. The best fit depends on your destinations, computer, upload bandwidth, and how much control you need—not on a universal ranking.
What multistreaming means—and what to check first
Multistreaming, also called simulstreaming, sends the same live program to YouTube and at least one other destination at the same time. Before choosing a tool, confirm that your YouTube channel is verified and live streaming is enabled; YouTube says enabling a first live stream can take at least 24 hours. Make sure your other destination accounts are active and in good standing, and check whether each needs an RTMP server URL and stream key. YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance explains the platform requirements and workflow choices.

- Choose local encoding if you want direct control over scenes and outputs and have a computer capable of encoding and sending each destination feed.
- Choose a cloud relay if you prefer to send one feed to a service that distributes it, reducing local routing complexity and computer load.
- Choose a browser studio if you want production tools in a browser as well as multistreaming, and its destination limits and platform support fit your needs.
YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists OBS, Restream, StreamYard, Streamlabs, Wirecast, and hardware options. It is a directory, not a comparative ranking or proof that every listed option supports every multistream workflow.

| Workflow | What it does | Good fit when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local encoder, such as OBS | Runs on your computer; the device handles processing. YouTube lists OBS as open-source recording and live-streaming software. | You need scene control and have a sufficiently capable computer and network. | The YouTube directory listing does not establish that OBS natively routes to multiple destinations. Verify the exact routing method, destination limits, and maintenance burden for the setup you choose. |
| Cloud relay, such as Restream | You send one feed to a cloud service, which distributes it to multiple platforms. YouTube’s directory describes Restream as a cloud studio for streaming to multiple platforms. | You want less local routing work or need to send to more than two channels, a use case YouTube says may suit cloud distribution. | Current plan limits, destination support, and pricing were not established in the cited YouTube directory or guide; check the vendor’s current terms. |
| Browser studio, such as StreamYard | Provides a browser-based production workflow. Its vendor help lists YouTube as a native destination and describes custom RTMP for platforms that accept an RTMP feed. | You want browser-based production and its available destinations and plan cap meet your needs. | StreamYard’s help currently lists multistreaming on paid plans: Core for 3 destinations, Advanced for 8, and Business for 10. These vendor plan details can change; confirm the current plan names, limits, and platform compatibility before subscribing. |
| Other verified encoder choices | YouTube’s directory also lists Streamlabs, Wirecast, and hardware encoders. | You are evaluating a particular production setup or hardware workflow. | A directory entry is not an endorsement or independent test, and does not establish identical features across products. |

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Plan bandwidth for every destination
With separate local outputs, add the target bitrate for each destination to estimate the total upload load. YouTube’s example combines a 6 Mbps stream and a 4 Mbps stream, making 10 Mbps of target bitrate; it recommends 15–20 Mbps upload capacity for that combined target to provide stability margin, especially on a shared connection. These are YouTube Help recommendations and an example, not a guarantee that a particular connection will be stable.
With a cloud relay, your computer generally sends one feed to the relay rather than one separate upload per destination. That can reduce local upload and routing demands, but you still need a stable connection to the relay and should verify the service’s requirements. A relay does not remove the need to consider output quality and destination compatibility.

Choose compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, its encoder guidance lists 12 Mbps at 1080p60 for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264; at 720p60 it lists 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 8 Mbps for H.264. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and the requirements for every other destination. When destinations differ, choose settings that all of them support.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Protocol: YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as specified in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Audio: YouTube’s guidance supports AAC or MP3 audio.
YouTube transcodes its incoming live stream into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That statement concerns YouTube’s processing; do not assume other platforms apply the same processing or accept the same input settings.

Set up and test before the event
- Confirm access: Verify that YouTube live streaming is enabled and that each other destination account is ready. Collect the correct server URL and stream key for each platform or relay.
- Select the routing method: Configure separate outputs in the local workflow you have verified, or connect one encoder feed to your cloud relay or browser studio and select the destinations there.
- Match encoder settings: Set protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format to settings supported by the encoder and every destination. Use the relevant platform’s live settings rather than assuming one site’s recommendations apply everywhere.
- Protect stream keys: Treat each key as a credential. Paste it only into the intended encoder or service, do not show it in a screen share, and regenerate it through the destination platform if it is exposed.
- Run a realistic test: YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video movement. Check the feed on each destination and confirm that sound, picture, framing, and any overlays behave as intended.
- Monitor while live: Watch encoder and platform stream-health indicators during the event. If a destination reports a problem, check its ingest status and settings rather than assuming every platform has the same issue.
An external microphone can improve the audio input to an encoder, but it is optional and does not perform multistreaming. YouTube includes external microphones among typical live-stream equipment.
Troubleshoot common multistream problems
- One or more destinations fail to start: Confirm that live streaming is enabled on the account, the account is in good standing, and the correct server URL and key were entered for that specific destination.
- Dropped frames or unstable output on local multi-output: Compare total target bitrate across outputs with available upload capacity. YouTube’s 1.5–2× margin recommendation is a useful planning reference for its example; also account for other users and devices on the connection.
- Encoder overload: A local workflow processes streams on the computer. Reduce production or encoding demands, or consider a cloud relay that receives one feed and distributes it.
- Video or audio rejected by a destination: Recheck codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe frequency, and audio format against that destination’s current requirements. Cross-platform settings may be constrained by the strictest destination.
- Test looks fine but the live event does not: Repeat the test with typical motion and audio, then monitor stream health during the event. A static test image or silent feed may not reveal issues that occur with real content.
Keep YouTube content and account rules in view
Multistreaming tools route or distribute a live feed; they do not grant rights to the material in it. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements before an event. Also review each destination’s rules, because compliance on one platform does not establish compliance on another.

Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded video that should keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate option from multistreaming a live program: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
