You can run a prerecorded nature video and audio stream continuously by feeding media files to FFmpeg, looping the inputs, and sending the encoded output to YouTube’s live ingest URL. Run FFmpeg as the foreground process in a Docker container and choose a restart policy to recover from some container exits. That does not prove the stream is healthy at YouTube: monitor the destination as well as the container. This guide explains the setup, but does not report a tested command or personal operational experience; a public implementation is an example, not proof of indefinite reliability.
What you need before starting
- A computer or server that can run Docker and FFmpeg, or a rented server with those tools installed.
- Video and audio files you have permission to use in a live broadcast, any saved replay, and commercial use if you plan to monetize.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and a stream key from YouTube Studio.
- Sufficient storage for your media and, if you need a complete recording, a plan for a local archive.
A published Docker project demonstrates a file-based stream, but its sample media is not automatically cleared for your use. Check each recording’s actual license or get permission. Keep a manifest or playlist if you plan to rotate several files.

Create the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live broadcast and open its Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into your encoder configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the RTMPS URL available from the lock icon beside the stream URL when supported.
- Protect the stream key as you would a password. Do not commit it to source control, expose it in screenshots, or leave it in publicly visible logs. If it leaks, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- If the channel has never streamed live before, allow up to 24 hours for live activation.
Organize media and loop it with FFmpeg
Put the media in a directory that Docker can mount into the container. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option loops an input indefinitely. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so place the loop option before the input it is intended to affect.

-f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"The example encodes H.264 at 720p/30fps only if the input and output configuration actually produce that resolution and frame rate; it does not scale the picture. Set output dimensions and frame rate deliberately for your source. The command also assumes the media contains audio. For separate audio and video files, choose inputs and mapping intentionally: files with different durations or formats do not become synchronized playlists automatically. If you need several tracks or clips to rotate in a particular order, build and test that sequence explicitly.
Choose encoder settings for the actual output
YouTube’s current guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends these settings for the listed case. They are ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a host has enough processing power or upload headroom.

Match the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to the stream you intend to send, and consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. YouTube recommends testing with representative picture movement and audio, checking your upload capacity with a speed test, and watching stream health in Live Control Room. Leave headroom above the video and audio bitrate for network variation.

Keep FFmpeg as the container’s foreground process so Docker can observe its exit status. Mount media from persistent storage rather than relying on files that exist only inside a disposable container. The exact image, mount syntax, user permissions, and network settings depend on your Docker and FFmpeg versions and the host operating system.

Choose the restart behavior deliberately. Docker’s always policy restarts a container after it exits and also restarts it when the daemon starts; unless-stopped behaves similarly but preserves an intentional manual stop across daemon restarts. Check Docker’s restart policy documentation for exact behavior in your installed version. Avoid stacking a host process manager on top of Docker’s own restart policy.
A restart policy can help recover from a process or container exit. It cannot establish that YouTube is still receiving valid, decodable media: FFmpeg may remain running while the destination has a problem. Add external monitoring or health checks if a silent stall would matter, and verify recovery with the YouTube event setup you intend to use.

Test the stream and plan for recording
- Start with representative video and audio, then check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming signal and stream health.
- Confirm the picture, sound, and intended resolution and frame rate before relying on an unattended run.
- Test the failure cases you care about, such as restarting the container and recovering after a network interruption. Confirm the event receives the restarted feed.
- If preserving the complete broadcast matters, record a local archive or schedule broadcasts to fit YouTube’s archive behavior.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends a local archive backup. A nominal 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as one guaranteed complete YouTube replay. If you record locally, estimate storage from the bitrate and duration you intend to keep; YouTube’s archive guidance does not prescribe a particular drive or capacity.
Choose where to run it
There are three practical approaches. Which costs less or proves more reliable depends on your existing hardware, network, storage, and how much maintenance you want to handle; the available evidence does not establish neutral price or performance rankings.

Troubleshooting
YouTube receives no signal
- Check that the event is live-ready and that first-time channel activation has completed.
- Verify the ingest URL and stream key from the correct Live Control Room event. Replace a key that has been exposed.
- Confirm the host has outbound connectivity and enough upload capacity for the configured stream.
The container restarts but the stream does not recover
Container restart only addresses container lifecycle, not successful delivery to YouTube. Check FFmpeg logs, destination stream health, and whether the URL, key, and event are still valid. Add external monitoring if unattended continuity matters.
The picture or sound is missing, wrong, or out of sync
- Check the selected input streams and output mapping; do not assume separate files will synchronize or loop together.
- Verify that the media contains the audio track you expect and that the output codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate match the target.
- Test the complete chosen playlist before leaving it unattended, particularly when clips have different durations or formats.
The stream looks unstable or drops
Check YouTube’s stream health, the host’s available upload capacity, and FFmpeg’s output for errors. Run the recommended speed test and test using representative movement and audio. A bitrate recommendation alone does not ensure sufficient network headroom.
Copyright and monetization considerations
Clear rights for nature recordings, music, and visuals for both live transmission and any retained replay. If you want commercial use, make sure the permission covers it. A sample project’s copyright warning does not grant rights to its materials.

The policy page notes a July 15, 2025 clarification renaming the repetitious-content policy to “inauthentic content.” That does not mean every long ambience stream is ineligible, nor does duration alone promise monetization. Add original, viewer-valued programming and keep rights clear; eligibility depends on YouTube’s policy and review.
