To keep a 24/7 lecture stream running, prevent the computer from entering system sleep while OBS is streaming. You can still let the display turn off: screen-off and system-sleep timers are separate on Windows 11, and macOS has a power-adapter setting for staying awake with the display off. Keep the computer plugged in, check the relevant setting for your operating system, and test the full setup before relying on it.
First, distinguish display sleep from computer sleep
Turning off the screen does not necessarily stop a stream. The important setting is whether the computer itself sleeps, because system sleep can suspend the work OBS needs to keep streaming. For an unattended lecture, configure the computer to stay awake on power while choosing a separate display timeout if you do not need the screen lit.

OBS has sleep-inhibition functions in its developer API: os_inhibit_sleep_create creates an inhibition object, and os_inhibit_sleep_set_active activates or deactivates it. That establishes that sleep inhibition exists in OBS’s code; it is not proof of a universal user-facing toggle or identical behavior across operating systems and versions. Set up Windows 11
Keep the computer awake while allowing the screen to turn off
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Find the plugged-in controls. Set the device sleep timeout so Windows will not put the computer to sleep during the lecture stream. Choose a longer timeout or Never if that option is available and appropriate for your setup.
- Set the screen-off timeout separately. You can let the display turn off after a chosen interval without choosing the same behavior for system sleep.
- Keep the computer connected to power for the stream, then run a test long enough to confirm the screen and system behave as intended.

Do not start with power-request overrides
OBS forum discussions mention powercfg -requests and request overrides, but those are community suggestions rather than Microsoft- or OBS-endorsed first-line instructions. An override can change how Windows honors sleep requests. If the ordinary plugged-in sleep timeout solves the problem, there is no need to alter request handling. (OBS forum discussion)
Set up macOS
Prevent sleep on adapter power while the display is off
- Connect the Mac to its power adapter.
- Open System Settings and check the Lock Screen and Battery options for your installed macOS version.
- Enable Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.
- Set the display to turn off according to your needs, then test that the Mac stays awake and OBS continues streaming.
Apple documents this option for preventing automatic sleep while the display is off on adapter power. The wording or location may differ by macOS version, so use the settings search or the current Apple guide if you cannot find the exact label. Linux: check the distribution and desktop settings
Sleep controls depend on the Linux distribution and desktop environment, so there is no verified universal menu path to give here. Check your distribution’s and desktop’s power-management settings for separate display and system-sleep behavior, and verify the instructions against the versions you use. Starting OBS automatically is not the same as keeping it awake
OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter. It can start streaming when OBS launches in a prepared workflow, but it is not a keep-awake switch and does not provide restart supervision or promise recovery after a crash, network outage, operating-system restart, or power failure. Use it only when you specifically need OBS to start streaming automatically; configure sleep separately. (OBS launch parameters)

Test the complete lecture setup before leaving it unattended
The OBS Quick Start Guide says: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.” For a 24/7 lecture, also run a longer practical check of your own complete setup before depending on it; that longer check is sensible planning, not a duration prescribed by OBS. - Confirm OBS is streaming and the lecture is visible on YouTube.
- Let the display turn off if that is how you plan to operate, and check that the stream continues.
- Verify that the computer remains on power and does not enter system sleep.
- Check the stream again after your intended unattended period; a short test cannot establish day-long reliability.
OBS’s minimum system requirements do not guarantee that a particular computer will stream or record well. Encoding, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity affect hardware demands. (OBS system requirements)

What sleep settings do—and do not—protect against
Keeping the computer awake addresses one interruption: automatic system sleep. It does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. A crash, update or reboot, thermal issue, network or ingest disruption, power failure, or lid-close behavior may still interrupt a local-computer setup. The sources cited here do not establish a complete reliability plan for those cases, so treat them as operational risks to check in your own setup rather than problems solved by changing a sleep timer.
