How to Run a 24/7 Kids’ YouTube Stream on Ubuntu Server with systemd

Run a prerecorded children’s YouTube stream continuously from Ubuntu Server with an encoder managed by systemd—and understand the settings, monitoring, and archive safeguards it needs.

You can run a prerecorded kids’ YouTube stream continuously from a headless Ubuntu Server by having an encoder send a looped video to YouTube Live and managing that encoder as a systemd service. The service can restart after an encoder exits, but it cannot by itself detect every frozen feed or fix a bad key, unusable media, or persistent network failure. Configure the stream for its actual child audience, verify it in YouTube Studio, and keep a separate recording if you need a complete archive.

Before you start: YouTube Live eligibility and audience settings

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, and streamers must be at least 16. Check current eligibility and enable Live well before the planned broadcast in YouTube’s live-streaming help and live-streaming restrictions guidance.

In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream using an encoder, then set its audience accurately. If the material is made for children, select “Yes, it’s Made for Kids”; do not choose a different setting to retain engagement features. YouTube disables or restricts features on made-for-kids content, including live chat, comments, reminders or notifications, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and personalized advertising. Contextual ads may still appear. See YouTube’s made-for-kids feature guidance.

Copy the ingest details securely

Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio. The key is a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not put it in a public repository, a world-readable service file, or routine logs. Use a root-readable configuration or environment file and restrictive permissions.

Prepare the Ubuntu host and media

This setup is an operational pattern, not a release-specific tested FFmpeg recipe. Exact package names, executable paths, options, and systemd unit syntax depend on the Ubuntu release and installed encoder build. Validate them on the target machine before relying on the broadcast.

  • Install an encoder package suitable for the Ubuntu release and confirm the executable path.
  • Create a dedicated unprivileged service account and a working directory it can read.
  • Put the prerecorded video and any local recording destination in directories with appropriate ownership and permissions.
  • Test every media input for readable video and audio. Normalize mixed source formats if they cause inconsistent output.
  • Design the encoder input so prerecorded material loops continuously and audio and video remain synchronized.

Keep enough disk capacity for any local recording and monitor its growth. A process can continue running even when its input has stalled or its output is not usable, so a successful process launch is not proof of a healthy public stream.

Choose an encoder format and test capacity

Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings as the baseline. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video encoding, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Select bitrate for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; match the stream’s configuration in Studio when using manual settings.

H.264 format YouTube recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that your server, encoder, or network will sustain the stream. Choose a format your host can encode continuously, leave upload bandwidth headroom, and test the actual route to YouTube with representative motion and audio. Monitor the stream during operation.

Create and manage the encoder with systemd

Use a systemd unit with an explicit service user, working directory, executable, configuration, and restart policy. Keep the stream key in a protected file referenced by the encoder configuration rather than exposing it in public source code or logs. Because the right command and unit details depend on your Ubuntu release and encoder build, verify local paths and options instead of copying an untested command.

  1. Validate the media and encoder first. Run a short test using the intended input, output settings, ingest URL, and key. Confirm that the encoder reads the file and YouTube receives usable audio and video.
  2. Write a dedicated unit. Specify the service account, working directory, command or protected configuration, and a restart policy appropriate for an unexpected encoder exit.
  3. Enable it at boot. Enable and start the unit using systemd, then check its state with systemctl status <unit>.
  4. Inspect service logs. Use journalctl -u <unit> to diagnose startup failures and unexpected exits. Ensure the key is not printed by the command or application.
  5. Confirm the actual broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, then periodically verify the public viewer experience.

Systemd can restart a process that exits when the unit is configured to do so. It does not treat an intentional systemd stop or restart as a process failure. Restarting also does not repair a wrong key, broken media, a persistent network outage, a YouTube ingest problem, or a feed that has frozen while the encoder process remains alive. See systemd service documentation.

Monitor more than whether the process exists

A watchdog that checks only for a running process can miss a stalled or silent stream. Use several signals together:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • systemd unit state and recent encoder progress;
  • YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health indicators;
  • periodic checks of the public watch page, including sound and moving video;
  • growth of the local recording, if one is configured.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance advises testing the encoder and monitoring audio and video quality. A preview that looks correct at startup is not evidence that an unattended stream remains healthy indefinitely.

Keep a complete archive independently

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on one continuous 24/7 broadcast becoming a complete YouTube archive. If preserving the full program matters, record locally or to another storage destination and monitor disk use and retention. Check YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The unit fails at startup Incorrect executable path, permissions, working directory, or encoder configuration Review systemctl status <unit> and journalctl -u <unit>; verify the service account can read the files and protected configuration.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Wrong ingest URL or key, channel not enabled for Live, or network/ingest issue Recheck the URL and key in Studio, confirm channel eligibility, and inspect Studio’s preview and health status.
The process runs, but video is frozen or silent Stalled input, unsupported or problematic media, or audio/video configuration issue Check encoder progress, test the source file, inspect Studio’s preview, and verify the public stream’s picture and sound.
The service repeatedly restarts The encoder is exiting, potentially due to invalid settings, unreadable media, or connectivity problems Read recent journal entries and test the same input and settings outside the unattended service before restarting it.
The archive is incomplete or missing A continuous stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold Use an independent recording for a complete archive and monitor its storage and retention.

Or let it run in the cloud

For prerecorded video going to YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops the uploaded video from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
