Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →FFmpeg can loop a local video file and send it to YouTube Live over RTMPS, but a command by itself does not make a dependable 24/7 station. You also need a live-enabled channel, rights to the specific music recording and visuals, settings that match YouTube’s encoder guidance, enough stable upload bandwidth, and a tested way to monitor and restart the stream.
Before you start: check rights and channel eligibility
Clear the recording, composition, and visuals
Traditional repertoire does not automatically make a particular performance free to stream. A raga or older composition may have a different rights status from a modern performance, arrangement, or recording of it. Confirm that you have permission to use the actual recording and any visual material in your broadcast.

YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can trigger a warning, replace the live image with a placeholder, interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the rightsholder has not added your channel to the Content ID allowlist. Archived streams can receive Content ID claims after the broadcast, too. Ask the relevant rightsholder about both live-stream permission and allowlisting before launch.
Confirm that the channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s access in YouTube Studio before preparing a long-running broadcast; do not assume that a successful FFmpeg connection overrides a channel restriction.

Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live stream, then obtain the ingest URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- Use the exact ingest URL and key in FFmpeg’s output address. YouTube’s recommended secure ingest protocol is RTMPS, which encrypts the connection between the encoder and YouTube. Use the RTMPS address supplied in Live Control Room when available.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not post it, expose it in a screen share, commit it to a public repository, or leave it in logs that others can access. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.
The key is part of the publishing destination, not a substitute for the stream’s channel eligibility or rights clearance. Keep the real key out of copied commands and examples.
Choose and test the video and audio settings
Use a profile supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. For an audio-led stream with a static image or restrained visual loop, a modest supported frame rate is usually more appropriate than choosing a high frame rate without a visual need. The values below are YouTube guidance, not a claim that every music broadcast needs the highest listed bitrate.

| Setting | YouTube guidance in the cited encoder help | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Video rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR) | Set the encoder’s target and maximum rate consistently with the selected profile and your upload capacity. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | At 30 fps, a 2-second interval corresponds to 60 frames between keyframes. |
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps guidance | Check that the source is actually stereo and audible; a configured audio bitrate cannot restore detail absent from the recording. |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Choose based on the visual content and stable upload capacity, not the music genre alone. |
| 480p at 30 fps, H.264 | 0.4 Mbps minimum; 4 Mbps recommended | A lower-resolution option can reduce bandwidth demand when it suits the image and viewers. |
These figures are from YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance; they are recommendations for the stated profiles, not universal requirements for every encoder or input. Compare your actual output profile with YouTube’s current table before going live, because available guidance can change.
Test the whole program, not just the connection
Start a private or otherwise controlled test using the same kind of recording, image, and motion planned for the station. Watch the Live Control Room preview, confirm that audio is present and not clipped, listen through transitions and loop boundaries, and check stream health while the test runs. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality continuously. A connection that appears successful at launch can still develop network or content problems later.

Loop a local file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation demonstrates real-time playback from a file and publishing to an RTMP server in FLV format. For a local video file that already contains the intended audio and visuals, the following is an example command shape:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "music-and-visual.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY"
- Replace
music-and-visual.mp4with the path to your local file. - Replace the example output address with the exact RTMPS ingest address and stream key from Live Control Room. Do not publish the actual key.
- Check the output resolution and bitrate against the YouTube profile you selected. The example specifies 30 fps, a 60-frame keyframe interval, and a 2,500 kbps video rate; it does not scale the source to a particular resolution or establish that those values fit every file, FFmpeg build, or connection.
- Run the command and check both FFmpeg’s output and the Live Control Room preview. Do not treat a process that remains open as proof that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
The command is an illustrative starting point, not a universal preset. The cited FFmpeg documentation establishes real-time file input and RTMP protocol use; it does not establish that every listed option works identically with every FFmpeg build or source format. Verify the installed build’s options and test the complete output. If the source is audio-only, provide or generate a compatible visual source using a method confirmed for your build, then test that complete audio-video output before relying on it.

-stream_loop -1 repeats the input file; it does not guarantee a seamless musical transition. Listen to the point where the file restarts for silence, an abrupt cut, a clipped note, or an unwanted change in order. For multiple recordings, explicitly prepare and test the playlist and transition behavior rather than assuming a file loop will create a gapless program.

Keep the stream running and recover deliberately
Reserve upload bandwidth
YouTube recommends upload capacity about 20% above the total stream bitrate and warns that network disruptions can break a stream. Measure outbound upload performance rather than relying on download speed. For example, the command’s illustrative 2,500 kbps video plus 128 kbps audio totals about 2,628 kbps before overhead; applying roughly 20% headroom means planning for around 3.2 Mbps of stable upload capacity for that example. This calculation is only useful if those output rates match your actual stream, and it does not guarantee reliability.

A wired connection may be worth considering if the computer and network support it, but it is optional and does not guarantee a stable broadcast. Test the path under the conditions in which the station will operate.
Monitor both sides and test restart behavior
- Monitor FFmpeg’s process and logs so you can see whether it exits or reports an input, encoding, or publishing error.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than relying only on the encoder’s local status.
- Prepare and test a restart or failover procedure with the exact FFmpeg build, operating environment, network, and YouTube configuration you will use.
- If your source is an HTTP input, FFmpeg documents reconnect controls including
reconnect_at_eof. Those HTTP-input options are not a blanket guarantee that FFmpeg will reconnect a failed RTMP/RTMPS publishing session.
Do not assume that restarting will always resume the same YouTube session without operator action. Test what happens after a source interruption, network loss, encoder exit, and YouTube ingest drop, and decide who or what will detect and respond to each failure.
Plan for archives separately
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived indefinitely or specify the best current procedure for rotating sessions. If archives matter, plan and test controlled session rotation and local recording, then verify the current behavior in Studio before launch.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot publish or YouTube shows no incoming stream | Ingest URL, stream key, channel eligibility, or connection | Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, check for a key reset or exposure, and confirm the channel is eligible. Read the encoder error and Live Control Room status together. |
| Video appears but audio is silent, distorted, or clipped | Input audio track, channel layout, sample rate, or source recording | Test the exact file locally; verify that it has the expected audio track and stereo layout, and listen to the encoded preview for silence, clipping, or level problems. |
| Stream health falls or the broadcast disconnects | Upload instability, insufficient headroom, or encoder/process failure | Measure outbound bandwidth, leave YouTube’s recommended headroom above the combined stream bitrate, inspect FFmpeg logs and stream health, and test your restart procedure. |
| Music is interrupted or the image is replaced | Third-party content detection or rights/allowlisting | Contact the relevant rightsholder to verify live use permission and Content ID allowlisting. A license does not itself ensure that a live match will not interrupt the stream. |
| A repeated program has a gap or jarring restart | Loop boundary or playlist transition | Inspect and listen to the transition, edit or replace the source as needed, and test the complete repeat before launch. |
| The live stream works but the expected archive is missing or incomplete | Session duration or archive behavior | Check the current Studio behavior. YouTube’s cited automatic-archive note covers streams under 12 hours; test shorter controlled sessions and local recording if archives are important. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer, FFmpeg process, and internet connection to be responsible for continuous playback, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The computer can be off; StreamNeo loops from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera.
