To hear and speak on a phone call through a Bluetooth speaker, pair and connect a speaker that supports phone calls, then select it from the call’s audio controls. On iPhone, choose Audio during a call or set a default under Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing. In Google’s Phone app on Android, tap the call-audio control and choose the connected Bluetooth device. A speaker that plays music may not support calls.
What you need before routing a call
- A speaker with call support: Check the exact speaker’s manual for phone calls, hands-free calling, speakerphone, or call audio. Bluetooth music playback alone does not establish that a speaker can handle calls; Google notes that not all Bluetooth accessories support calls (Google’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance).
- A paired, connected speaker: Keep the phone nearby and make sure the speaker is connected to that phone, not another paired device.
- An app with an audio-output control: Menus depend on the phone and calling app. The steps below cover iPhone call controls, Google’s Phone app on Android, and Google Voice on Android; other apps may use different controls.
Pair and connect the speaker
If the speaker is not already paired, open your phone’s Bluetooth settings, put the speaker in pairing mode, and select it from the available devices. On Android, Google documents the path as Settings or quick settings > Bluetooth > Pair new device. To reconnect a previously paired speaker, open Bluetooth settings and select it under saved devices. Labels and steps can vary by Android version and manufacturer (Google’s Android Bluetooth setup guide).

Once connected, check the speaker’s settings if your phone offers separate controls for media and calls. On Android, the relevant switch may be labeled Phone audio. A speaker can remain connected for music while call audio is disabled.

Route a call on iPhone
Choose the speaker for the current call
- Start or answer a call.
- On the call screen, tap Audio.
- Choose the Bluetooth speaker from the available audio destinations.
Apple documents the Audio control for changing the destination during a call (While on a call on iPhone).

Set a default call destination
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing.
- Choose the destination you want calls to use, including a Bluetooth device when available.
This setting changes the default routing behavior. Use the in-call Audio control when you want to choose a different destination for a particular call. See Apple’s call routing and automatic answering guide.
Route a call on Android
In Google’s Phone app
- Start or answer a call in the Phone app.
- Tap the call audio or speaker control.
- Select the connected Bluetooth speaker.
Google documents this control as switching among the earpiece, the phone’s speakerphone, and a connected Bluetooth headset. The exact label or layout may differ by device (Google Phone app: Make and receive phone calls).

If the speaker is missing or calls stay on the phone
- Open Settings > Connected devices or Bluetooth, then open the speaker’s device settings.
- If available, turn on Phone audio.
- Confirm the speaker is connected to this phone and that another paired device is not handling the call.
- Return to the active call and open its audio selector again.

During a Google Voice call, tap Sound and choose the external device. These controls apply to Google Voice; they are not instructions for every Android calling app (Google Voice: Change your microphone or speakers on Android).

Troubleshoot common call-routing problems
Music plays, but calls do not
Check the accessory settings for Phone audio or Call Audio, and confirm the speaker’s manual says it supports calls. For example, Bose says disabling Call Audio on the cited SoundLink Home model family disables speakerphone functions (Bose SoundLink Home: Music interrupted by incoming call).
The speaker does not appear in the call menu
Confirm that it is paired and connected, then check whether another paired device is receiving calls. Reconnect the speaker if necessary and reopen the call’s audio selector. A connection shown for music does not necessarily mean call routing is enabled.

The call switches back to the phone
Verify that the speaker’s call function is enabled, then select it again from the active call screen. Sony’s SRS-XE300 guide describes call routing over HFP/HSP and directs users to switch the call device from the smartphone when needed; this guidance is specific to that model (Sony SRS-XE300 Help Guide).

For the Sony SRS-XE300 in Stereo Pair or Party Connect mode, call audio comes from only the speaker whose Bluetooth indicator is lit blue. This is model-specific; behavior may differ for other speaker systems (Sony SRS-XE300 Help Guide).
Keep calls off a Bose SoundLink Home speaker
Bose says Android users can turn off Call Audio in that speaker’s Bluetooth settings to prevent calls interrupting music, but doing so disables its speakerphone functions. For iPhone, Bose recommends setting Call Audio Routing to iPhone to keep calls off the speaker. These directions are specific to the cited Bose model family (Bose SoundLink Home support instructions).
Choose the right audio destination
The earpiece, phone speakerphone, and Bluetooth speaker each serve a different need. A Bluetooth speaker is useful only when it supports call audio and has a usable microphone; an in-call selector lets you choose the destination for that call, while iPhone also provides a default routing setting. In a stereo group, check the speaker’s own instructions to learn how calls are handled.
