SOCKS5 relays supported traffic between the client and a requested destination; it does not automatically capture every device’s traffic or encrypt application data. The “Layer 5” description is a useful architectural shorthand, not a strict OSI classification.
What SOCKS5 does in an automation setup
SOCKS5 is a client/server relay protocol: an application that understands SOCKS asks a proxy server to connect to a destination on its behalf. That can let an automation client use one relay mechanism for different target applications without each target needing its own application-specific proxy protocol.

RFC 1928 describes SOCKS as a “shim-layer” between the application and transport layers and says it does not provide network-layer gateway services such as forwarding ICMP messages. The IETF security glossary describes SOCKS as layered under the application layer and above the transport layer. These descriptions indicate where SOCKS fits in a system; they do not establish that it belongs exclusively to a numbered OSI layer. [RFC 1928] [RFC 2828]
In practice, the application must support SOCKS and be configured to use the proxy. Setting up a SOCKS server alone does not redirect unrelated programs, system traffic, or ICMP.

How a SOCKS5 connection is negotiated
For a TCP client, the standard flow is a connection to the SOCKS service, method negotiation, any authentication required by the selected method, and a relay request. That request identifies a command, destination address type and value, and destination port. SOCKS5 defines IPv4, IPv6, and domain-name address forms. TCP port 1080 is conventional for SOCKS, but a server may listen on another port. [RFC 1928]
The standard defines three commands:
- CONNECT: Request a connection to a destination; this is the common pattern for TCP clients.
- BIND: Ask the proxy to support an incoming connection, for protocols or applications that need that behavior.
- UDP ASSOCIATE: Establish an association for UDP traffic. Both the client and server implementation must support the required UDP behavior.
A protocol’s support for a command does not guarantee that a particular automation library exposes it. Check the client and server documentation for the traffic mode you need.
Configure curl to use a SOCKS5 proxy
curl’s SOCKS options demonstrate the client-side configuration. Use socks5:// when curl should resolve the target hostname locally, or socks5h:// when the proxy should resolve it. Proxy-side resolution can be useful when the automation environment cannot resolve a name that the proxy can, or when the intended DNS path is through the proxy. If no proxy port is specified, curl assumes 1080. [curl manual]
| curl proxy setting | Where the target hostname is resolved | Example |
|---|---|---|
socks5:// |
Locally, by the machine running curl | curl --proxy socks5://proxy.example:7000 https://example.com |
socks5h:// or --socks5-hostname |
By the SOCKS proxy | curl --socks5-hostname proxy.example:7000 https://example.com |
These examples configure curl as a client; they do not install, configure, or secure a SOCKS server. Use your chosen server software’s current documentation and your operating system’s package and service instructions for those steps. A universal daemon installation recipe or configuration cannot be inferred from the protocol specification alone.
Choose the right DNS, traffic, and security behavior
Decide where DNS should run
With curl, the distinction is explicit: socks5:// resolves the destination locally, while socks5h:// delegates resolution to the proxy. Consider which side can reach the relevant DNS names and which resolution path your automation is intended to use. This setting concerns destination-name resolution; it does not, by itself, encrypt DNS or other traffic.

Match the traffic mode to client support
For ordinary TCP requests, determine whether the client supports SOCKS CONNECT and configure the server endpoint it is meant to use. For UDP workloads, verify UDP ASSOCIATE support in both the specific client and server. The fact that SOCKS5 defines both TCP and UDP use cases does not mean every library implements both. [RFC 1928]
Keep authentication separate from encryption
SOCKS5 does not guarantee that proxied application data is encrypted. RFC 1928 says security depends on the authentication and encapsulation methods an implementation provides and the peers select. RFC 1929 defines a username/password authentication method, but choosing that method alone should not be treated as encryption. Distinguish proxy authentication, protection of the client-to-proxy connection, and application-level protection such as TLS to the destination. Confirm which methods your implementation supports and actually negotiates. [RFC 1928] [RFC 1929]
Deploy the server with implementation-specific controls
The SOCKS specification defines protocol behavior, not a current installation recipe for every operating system or a production configuration for every daemon. When selecting a server implementation, use its official documentation alongside your distribution’s package, service, firewall, and authentication guidance. Avoid exposing a listener more broadly than intended.
- Allow connections only from the client networks that need the proxy, using the controls supported by your server and hosting environment.
- Verify the configured listening interface and port rather than assuming that the conventional port 1080 is in use.
- Confirm the selected authentication and any client-to-proxy protection instead of assuming SOCKS provides encryption.
- Check logs and monitoring available in the chosen implementation so you can detect unexpected access or failures.
These are operational precautions, not a substitute for the server’s own hardening instructions. Exact commands, defaults, and firewall rules vary by implementation and operating system.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot a script that does not use the proxy
- The request still appears to resolve locally: In curl, use
socks5h://or--socks5-hostnameif proxy-side DNS resolution is intended. With other clients, check their documented DNS behavior. - The connection cannot reach the proxy: Check the hostname, configured port, listening interface, and network access rules against the server’s actual configuration.
- TCP works but a UDP task fails: Verify that the application supports SOCKS UDP ASSOCIATE and that the server supports the needed UDP behavior.
- Authentication fails: Confirm that client and server agree on an authentication method and that credentials are configured as expected by that implementation.
- You expected all machine traffic to be redirected: SOCKS is used by applications configured to speak to the proxy; it is not, by itself, a network-layer gateway or automatic system-wide traffic capture mechanism.
