The right cloud computer for an AI agent depends on what you need it to do. GitHub Codespaces and Replit are cloud development workspaces; E2B and Daytona describe programmable environments for running agent workloads. They are not interchangeable, and the available product information does not establish a universal winner on price, performance, or security.
What kind of cloud computer does your agent need?
“Cloud computer” can mean a ready-to-use coding workspace attached to a repository, an API-driven sandbox where an agent runs code, or a general browser-based development environment. Start by deciding whether a person needs to work inside a development workspace or whether your product needs to create and control execution environments programmatically.

- Choose a repository-linked workspace when developers and agents need a repeatable environment for work associated with a code repository.
- Look at an agent execution sandbox when your application needs to launch isolated environments, run code or desktop actions, and manage their lifecycle through an API or SDK.
- Consider a browser IDE when the priority is an approachable online coding workspace, and verify separately that its runtime fits your agent’s automation and isolation requirements.
These distinctions matter more than a broad label such as “cloud computer.” Similar descriptions from vendors do not establish equivalent isolation or security guarantees.
How do the four options differ?
| Service | What its official source describes | Good starting point | Check before adopting |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Codespaces | Cloud-hosted, repository-configurable development environments, accessed through a browser or IDE | Agent work closely tied to GitHub repositories and dev-container workflows | Current included quota, machine sizes, idle and retention behavior, organization billing, secrets, and network controls |
| E2B | Isolated Linux microVMs for agent sessions, with code execution, desktop use, network policy, persistent storage, and lifecycle controls | Product teams embedding programmable execution or computer use in an agent | Current pricing, regions, limits, security documentation, and the operational requirements for BYOC |
| Daytona | Agent-oriented sandboxes with SDK, API, and CLI access, filesystem and process operations, and stateful snapshots | Teams seeking programmatic agent environments with persisted state | Current documentation, support and deployment options, billing, isolation details, and service terms |
| Replit | A browser-based cloud development environment with framework support and automatic package installation | Individuals or teams seeking an approachable online coding workspace | Whether current agent and runtime features satisfy your isolation and automation needs, plus current pricing and limits |
When is GitHub Codespaces a fit?
GitHub defines a codespace as a development environment hosted in the cloud. Repository-level dev container configuration lets a team specify a repeatable environment, which can make Codespaces a natural starting point when the agent’s work follows an existing GitHub repository workflow. GitHub’s product page and documentation describe the service and its configuration.

The remote development container uses Linux: Ubuntu by default, with other Linux distributions configurable. Windows and macOS are not supported as the remote container operating systems. Personal accounts on Free or Pro have a monthly free-use quota, subject to GitHub’s usage and billing rules. Usage may be billed to an individual or an organization; if a personal quota is exhausted and there is no valid payment method, usage is blocked. Budgets can limit metered spending. Check GitHub’s current billing documentation for quota amounts and your account’s terms rather than assuming a particular allowance.
When is E2B a fit?
E2B says it provides an isolated Linux microVM for each agent session. Its service description includes command and code execution, a PTY and full desktop, network ingress and egress governed by policy, persistent files and buckets, and lifecycle actions such as pause, resume, snapshot, and fork. It names coding, computer use, background jobs, reinforcement-learning rollouts, and evaluations as intended workloads.

The repository states: “As of June 2026, Daytona’s core development has moved to a private codebase.” It also says the public repository is no longer maintained and will receive no further updates, fixes, or releases. The official product site remains available, but verify current documentation, support, deployment, and service details there before basing an implementation on repository material. The repository notice is not, by itself, a comparison of Daytona’s current service with the other options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is Replit a fit?
Replit describes a browser-based cloud development environment with framework support and automatic package installation. That makes it a candidate for people who want an online coding workspace without setting up a local development environment. The reviewed Replit page does not establish that its environment provides the same API-first sandbox model or isolation guarantees as a dedicated agent execution service. If your agent must create, control, and dispose of isolated runtimes programmatically, verify those requirements directly before choosing it.

What should you compare before choosing?
Compare services against the workload and threat model you actually have. A vendor’s use of words such as “isolated” or “secure” is not enough to show that two services protect against the same risks.
- Workspace or runtime: Does the agent need a developer workspace tied to a repository, or an environment your application can launch and control through an API?
- Isolation boundary: What is isolated from what? Ask how the provider describes the boundary for untrusted code and what assumptions it makes about workloads.
- Network and secrets: Can you restrict outbound connections, control inbound access, and keep credentials away from code that should not receive them?
- Persistence and cleanup: Which files or state survive pauses, snapshots, or restarts, and how can you delete them when a run ends?
- Integration and operations: Check the SDK, API, CLI, process controls, lifecycle management, and the work your team must do to operate the environment.
- Location and account control: Confirm available regions and whether the service can run in an account or environment your organization approves.
- Cost model: Check the live billing unit, quotas, idle time, storage, concurrency, and data transfer. Estimate a typical run as well as the time an environment remains idle.
- Support and terms: Review current documentation, support arrangements, service terms, and any security materials required by your organization.
Comparable current prices, independent performance measurements, and a shared security assessment are not established for these four options here. Avoid treating vendor feature descriptions as a measured ranking.
Quick Recap
How do I run an AI coding agent in the cloud?
- Define the job. Decide whether the agent edits a repository in a developer workspace or runs generated code and desktop actions in a managed sandbox.
- Write down the constraints. Specify what data the agent may access, whether code is untrusted, which network destinations are allowed, what state must persist, and any required account or region.
- Shortlist the matching category. Start with Codespaces for repository-centered development, E2B or Daytona for programmable agent environments, or Replit for a browser-based coding workspace.
- Validate the workflow and controls. Use the provider’s current documentation to check environment setup, APIs, access to secrets, network policy, persistence, and cleanup. Confirm the configuration meets your threat model instead of relying on a general security label.
- Estimate a representative bill. Use current provider pricing and include run time, idle time, storage, concurrency, and data transfer. Include organization billing or BYOC operating needs where applicable.
- Confirm operational fit. Check current service terms, support, deployment options, and documentation before committing the agent workflow to the platform.
