Use FFmpeg to send a playlist of local videos to YouTube Live, keep FFmpeg running under a service manager such as systemd, and use cron for bounded jobs such as refreshing the playlist or running a health check. Cron alone is not a reliable owner for a process that must stay live: it starts scheduled jobs, while a service manager can supervise FFmpeg and restart it if it exits.
How the pieces fit together
A 24/7 stream involves three separate jobs: FFmpeg reads and sends media, a process supervisor manages FFmpeg’s lifetime, and cron runs tasks at chosen times. Combining those roles avoids treating a short-lived scheduled command as if it were a persistent streaming service.

- FFmpeg: reads the video inputs and sends the outgoing media to YouTube Live.
- systemd or another service manager: runs FFmpeg outside an interactive shell and can restart it after a process failure.
- Cron: invokes a defined maintenance script, such as one that rebuilds a playlist or checks for a stalled process.
- Monitoring: checks both local progress and the public YouTube playback. A running local process does not prove that viewers are receiving fresh video.
This is a practical arrangement, not a YouTube-mandated design. A community setup illustrates systemd supervision alongside cron watchdog and restart jobs; its choices should not be treated as universal requirements (cooscreations’ 24/7 YouTube Stream setup notes).

Choose an FFmpeg input method
Put the video files on storage the Linux host can access, then choose an FFmpeg playlist method that matches the files and how you expect the list to change. FFmpeg’s official formats documentation describes concat demuxing and other input formats, but does not prescribe a ready-made cron recipe for rotating a YouTube playlist (FFmpeg Formats Documentation).

Do not assume a list of dissimilar clips will transition cleanly just because FFmpeg can read each file individually. Inspect the codecs, container formats, dimensions, frame rates, audio streams, and durations. If the files differ substantially, normalize them ahead of time or choose an input and encoding approach that can accommodate those differences. The right profile depends on the files and channel; there is no single setting established for every playlist.
Decide how updates should work
Playlist formats and FFmpeg input behavior differ. Before building a cron job around updates, establish whether the running FFmpeg process will see a changed list or whether it must be restarted to load it. The playlist-generation script should write a complete, valid list in a controlled way; avoid leaving a partially written file for the streaming process to read. Test the exact behavior with your installed FFmpeg version rather than assuming a file update reloads automatically.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the FFmpeg configuration. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses these values to connect the encoder; follow the Live Control Room steps to check the preview and go live as applicable (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not commit it to a public repository, put it in a world-readable configuration file, or expose it in logs. The community setup notes also warn against committing a real key.
- Test the connection in the Live Control Room before leaving the stream unattended. Confirm the expected video and audio arrive at YouTube, not merely that FFmpeg started locally.
Keep FFmpeg running under a service manager
Run the FFmpeg command as a long-lived service rather than launching it from a shell that may close. Configure the service manager to restart the process if it exits, and keep its logs accessible for diagnosis. The precise unit configuration depends on the Linux distribution and the command you use, so use the service manager’s documentation and verify the resulting service state on your host.

Use cron for playlist refreshes and checks
Good cron jobs for this setup
- Rebuild the playlist after new media arrives.
- Run a health-check script that looks for a stalled progress signal and reports or acts on it.
- Schedule deliberate maintenance, including a controlled restart when you have decided the interruption is acceptable.
Make scheduled jobs predictable
Cron jobs run with a limited, predictable environment rather than inheriting your interactive shell setup. Use explicit paths to scripts, media, configuration, and logs; ensure the job runs as the intended user; and handle errors visibly. A watchdog or refresh job must not launch a second FFmpeg process while the service-managed process is already running. Use a locking or service-control strategy appropriate to your system.
The exact cron syntax, process locking, and playlist reload behavior depend on the distribution, shell, FFmpeg command, and playlist type. The FFmpeg and YouTube documentation cited here do not define those details for this particular arrangement, so validate them on the target host.
Test before relying on unattended playback
- Run a short test stream and confirm that the playlist advances in the intended order.
- Check audio synchronization and transitions at clip boundaries, especially where codecs, dimensions, or frame rates differ.
- Change the playlist using the same refresh process cron will use. Confirm whether the running FFmpeg process picks up the change or needs a controlled restart.
- Stop the FFmpeg process deliberately and verify the service manager’s recovery behavior.
- Run the watchdog and confirm that it detects the condition you intend without creating duplicate FFmpeg jobs.
- Check the public YouTube playback for fresh video and audio. Local process health alone cannot establish what viewers receive.
These are validation steps to perform on your own setup, not reported test results for a universal Linux configuration.
YouTube broadcast and archive behavior
YouTube distinguishes the incoming stream—the audio/video connection and its settings—from the viewer-facing broadcast, which is the video or event viewers watch. Its API documentation describes a 24/7 feed with a separate interview broadcast, illustrating that the two concepts are not interchangeable (YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC).

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee that a continuous stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived in full. If you need a complete archive, plan and verify a recording workflow separately rather than relying on an assumption about a 24/7 broadcast.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg runs, but YouTube does not show the expected incoming video | Server URL, stream key, or Live Control Room workflow | Recheck the URL and key in the selected stream’s settings, protect the key, and verify the preview and go-live steps in YouTube Studio. |
| A clip fails or transitions break | Playlist format or differences between media files | Inspect container, codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio streams, and durations; test the exact playlist method and normalize incompatible clips if needed. |
| A playlist edit has no effect | Input format may not reload a changed list while FFmpeg is running | Test reload behavior for the installed FFmpeg version. If a restart is required, make it controlled and account for the interruption. |
| A cron job works manually but not on schedule | Different environment, user, or paths | Use explicit executable and file paths, confirm the cron job’s user and permissions, and write errors to a log you can inspect. |
| More than one FFmpeg process appears | A cron job or watchdog starts another encoder instead of managing the existing service | Have maintenance jobs check or control the service, and use an appropriate lock so they cannot launch duplicates. |
| The service is active but viewers see stale or missing video | Local process status does not confirm public playback | Inspect FFmpeg progress and logs, then verify the actual YouTube playback and incoming status. |
| A scheduled restart interrupts the stream | The restart is an intentional process interruption | Schedule it only when acceptable, or remove the preventive restart if it is not justified for your setup. |
When a hosted workflow is a better fit
If you do not want to maintain a Linux host, FFmpeg service, cron jobs, and media storage, YouTube’s encoder list includes hosted options. It describes Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming; that is an alternative workflow, not a required part of the cron method (YouTube’s encoder information).
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
