To rotate a Hugging Face access token, create a replacement with only the permissions its workload needs, update that workload, confirm it works, and then delete or refresh the old token in Settings → Access Tokens. If a token may have leaked, revoke it promptly rather than waiting for a planned migration. You can audit your own token roles and scopes in Access Tokens; organization administrators can use Tokens Management and audit logs where their plan and permissions allow.
Choose the right token before rotating
Hugging Face offers three broad token roles: read for read-only repository access, write for creating or pushing content, and fine-grained for limiting access to selected resources and actions. A token’s permissions work alongside the account’s organization membership, so a narrowly scoped token does not grant access the account itself lacks. See Hugging Face’s User Access Tokens documentation.

- Use
readwhen a workload only needs to retrieve accessible repositories or artifacts. - Use
writeonly when it must create or modify content. - Prefer
fine-grainedfor production and other cases where access should be restricted to specific resources or actions. Hugging Face recommends fine-grained tokens for production use.
Create a separate token for each application or use, such as a laptop, notebook, or custom inference server. That lets you revoke or rotate one integration without disrupting unrelated workloads.

Rotate an individual user token safely
- In Hugging Face settings, open Access Tokens and create a token with a descriptive name and the narrowest role or fine-grained scope that will support the workload.
- Update the application, notebook, CI configuration, or secret store to use the replacement. Keep the new value out of logs and shell history; use protected environment variables or files when passing it to a process.
- For a planned rotation, verify the workload works with the new token before removing the previous one. This staged order is a practical rollout approach, not a universal sequence prescribed by Hugging Face.
- Return to Access Tokens, select Manage for the prior token, and delete or refresh it once the replacement is confirmed.
During creation, capture the token securely: service-account token values are displayed only once when created or rotated, so losing the value means issuing another token.

If a token has leaked, revoke it immediately
For your own token, delete or refresh it in Access Tokens. When responding to a discovered token belonging to someone else, Hugging Face documents a global revocation endpoint: POST /api/credentials/revoke. It accepts one or more raw credentials and invalidates matching tokens everywhere. The endpoint always responds with 202 Accepted, whether or not a submitted token existed, so that response cannot confirm whether a credential was valid. The token owner receives an email notification and must create a new token to regain access. Follow the official token security guidance, and do not expose raw credentials in command history or logs.
Organization-level revocation has a narrower effect: it removes a token’s access to that organization but leaves it usable for the owner’s other resources. Hugging Face documents administrator token revocation as an Enterprise-and-above feature. Revocation remains in effect for that organization and cannot be undone; a member who needs access again must create a new token. To invalidate a leaked credential everywhere, use global credential revocation rather than only removing its access to one organization. Details are in Organization Token Management.

Audit token permissions and organization activity
Review your own tokens
Open Settings → Access Tokens to inspect your token roles and any fine-grained scopes. Check that each credential still belongs to an active use, has no broader access than that use requires, and is not shared by unrelated applications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReview member tokens as an organization administrator
The organization’s Tokens Management view can list member tokens and display fine-grained permissions. Use it to identify broad access, credentials that appear inactive, or tokens that have gone a long time without rotation. Team and Enterprise administrators can apply controls such as allowing only fine-grained tokens or requiring approval for applicable fine-grained tokens; exact controls vary by plan. See Tokens Management and the Team & Enterprise documentation.

Use audit logs to track organization events
Hugging Face’s audit-log documentation identifies org.rotate_token as an organization token-rotation event. It also lists events for enabling or disabling token approval and for authorization requests that are submitted, approved, revoked, or denied. Exporting an organization audit log requires the calling user or service account to have Export the audit log permission, identified as org.auditLog.write. See Audit Logs.
Use service accounts for organization-owned automation
For automation that belongs to an organization rather than an individual employee, a Hugging Face service account avoids tying the workflow to a member’s personal identity. Its token can be scoped across the organization or limited to selected repositories. Administrators can update its permissions, rotate its token (the old value stops working immediately), or delete it. Because the token value is shown only once when created or rotated, store the replacement securely at issuance. See Service Accounts.

Consider short-lived CI access instead of a stored token
If a CI workflow only needs Hub access while a run is active, Hugging Face Trusted Publishers can exchange the CI provider’s OIDC identity for a short-lived Hub token at the start of each run. This avoids storing an access token as a CI secret, if the workflow and required scope are supported. See Trusted Publishers.
