To rotate a Chromebook screen quickly, press Ctrl + Shift + Rotate. Each press turns the screen by 90 degrees; repeat until it is upright. You can also choose an orientation for a specific display in ChromeOS settings.
Rotate the screen with a keyboard shortcut
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Rotate on the Chromebook keyboard. Google labels this shortcut “Rotate screen 90 degrees” in its Chromebook keyboard shortcuts documentation.
- Repeat the shortcut to cycle through orientations until the screen is positioned as you want.
Google’s shortcut reference is written for US customers using a standard English QWERTY keyboard, so key placement may differ on other layouts. If you cannot identify the Rotate key, check the keyboard layout and use ChromeOS’s on-device shortcut viewer.

Choose an orientation in Settings
- Select the time or status area in the bottom-right corner of the screen, then open Settings.
- Go to Device > Displays.
- Select Built-in display or the connected monitor you want to adjust.
- Choose the required option under Orientation.
ChromeOS lets you select the display before changing its orientation, so check that the intended screen is selected when a monitor is connected. Google’s instructions are in Connect your Chromebook to a monitor.

If you want the screen to rotate as you move the Chromebook
Manual rotation and automatic rotation are different. A 2021 answer in the Google Chromebook Help Community suggests searching Settings for “rotate” and looking for an Auto-rotate option. Because this is community guidance rather than a current official help procedure, the setting may differ or be unavailable depending on the Chromebook, its mode, or ChromeOS version.

Which method should you use?
- Quick adjustment: Use the keyboard shortcut to rotate by 90 degrees at a time.
- Specific orientation or external monitor: Use Displays settings, where you can select the screen and choose its orientation.
- Automatic rotation in tablet use: Check Settings for Auto-rotate; availability can vary by device and mode.
