I write again because producing a finished paragraph is not the only point of writing. The work of finding what I mean, testing whether it holds together, and deciding what I am willing to say is part of the result. Generative AI can help make fluent text; it cannot make those choices on my behalf.
Writing helps me find out what I think
Sometimes an idea feels clear only while it stays in my head. Putting it into sentences makes its gaps harder to ignore: a claim needs support, two points may contradict each other, or the conclusion may not follow from the beginning. Revising is not simply polishing what I already know. It can change what I understand.

That is one reason I return to the page. I want the finished piece, but I also value the thinking that gets me there. Duncan Brumby of the UCL Interaction Centre describes writing as both a way to communicate ideas and a way to develop them. He notes that drafting, reading, revising, and restructuring can help writers clarify arguments and expose gaps. That is an account of writing’s potential, not proof of a universal cognitive effect. UCL’s commentary on writing and AI puts the distinction plainly: “The cognitive work does not disappear; it moves—from generating prose to reading and editing it.”

I do not think using AI makes writing pointless, or that human-only writing is automatically better. The more useful question is what kind of work I want to do, and what I am asking a tool to do for me. An assistant might help me get unstuck, offer a structure to challenge, or surface a phrasing I would not have considered. But accepting a sentence is different from deciding it is true, fair, and worth publishing.

In a controlled online experiment, Doshi and Hauser asked 293 participants to write eight-sentence short stories. On average, access to generative AI ideas increased the stories’ novelty and usefulness in that task. There was a trade-off: AI-inspired stories were more similar to the ideas supplied by the AI, which points to possible anchoring and less variety across outputs. The study reported similarity results of 5.2% for the one-idea condition and 5.0% for the five-idea condition, relative to the human-only condition. Those are study-specific findings, not a general creativity score. The task was short fiction, and participants could not customize or repeatedly interact with the AI; the results do not settle what happens in other genres or in long-term writing practice. That combination matters to me: help can expand what one person produces while nudging different people toward more similar starting points. Neither result dictates what a writer should do. It does make the choice of when to seek suggestions—and when to step away from them—part of the writing itself.

Using a tool does not outsource judgment
When I write, I remain responsible for the claims I publish, even if a tool helped me draft or revise them. Brumby argues that faster production increases the need for oversight, judgment, and accountability. I take that as a practical point: the easier it is to produce words, the more important it is to ask whether those words are accurate, relevant, and actually mine to stand behind.
That responsibility includes being honest about assistance when the context calls for it. A 2024 vignette study found that the amount of AI assistance affected how people assessed a human writer’s authorship, creatorship, responsibility, and disclosure. It used hypothetical scenarios, and its authors note limits in sampling and vignette design. It does not establish a legal standard or a universal disclosure rule. It does suggest that “AI-assisted” can mean very different things, and that readers may care how much of the work a person contributed. The study on AI assistance and perceived authorship is a useful reminder that using a tool and claiming sole credit are not necessarily the same question.

Why I choose to write again
My reason is simple, even if the work rarely is: I want to know what I think well enough to say it clearly, and I want to take responsibility for saying it. A machine can offer fluent possibilities. I still have to decide what deserves attention, what needs evidence, what should be cut, and what I mean to leave with the reader.
That is a personal judgment, not a claim that everyone must write the same way or that every sentence needs to be produced without assistance. In education, one 2025 perspective proposes a spectrum of assessment practices, from human-only work through bounded AI use to full integration, and favors transparent declaration over relying only on AI detection. It is a proposal for thinking about assessment, not an experimentally validated universal standard. Its underlying question—what it means to “write” when a machine can do it—also applies beyond school. The answer depends partly on the task, but for me it begins with who is making the decisions and who stands behind the result. Read the 2025 perspective on writing and AI in education.

I write again not because AI cannot write, but because deciding what I want to say—and revising until I can stand behind it—remains worth doing.
