Yes—an Oppo phone with an unlockable bootloader can usually be rooted without TWRP by patching its own stock boot-related image in the official Magisk app, then flashing that patched image with Fastboot. This is not a universal method for every Oppo model: bootloader policy, region, ColorOS build, chipset, partition layout and flashing mode must all match.
Magisk’s current guidance treats custom-recovery installation as deprecated and recommends image patching instead. See the official installation documentation.

What you need before starting
- An exact Oppo model number, market/region, ColorOS version and build number.
- A bootloader that the device and region actually allow you to unlock.
- A Windows, macOS or Linux computer with the official Android SDK Platform-Tools.
- The official Magisk APK from the Magisk project.
- A reliable USB cable, adequate storage and, on Windows, an appropriate device driver if Fastboot is not detected.
- The exact stock firmware package for the build currently installed, or the exact build you intend to install.
Do not use one-click root utilities, repacked Magisk APKs or patched images downloaded from forums, messaging channels or video descriptions. Magisk warns that an image patched for one device must not be flashed to another, even when the retail model names look identical.

Unlocking the bootloader normally performs a factory reset. Android’s documented unlock flow warns the user and erases existing data to prevent unauthorized access. Back up photos, videos, contacts, messages, WhatsApp and other app data, authenticator seeds or recovery codes, eSIM details, password-manager recovery information and the original firmware files before you continue. If your model has a trusted, device-specific method for backing up modem or persist-related data, consider using it.

An unlocked or modified boot chain can affect warranty or official support depending on your region. Banking, streaming, enterprise-management and DRM-dependent apps may detect the state and stop working; root hiding is not a guarantee. Modified read-only partitions can also interfere with future over-the-air updates, and relocking a modified phone can brick it.
Check whether this Oppo can be unlocked
OPPO’s support portal offers model and regional support, but it does not establish one current unlock procedure for every Oppo phone. Check the exact model, market, chipset, ColorOS release and build through official documentation or support before issuing an unlock command. Some phones expose standard Fastboot; others require a model-specific authorization or service process.
Enable the Android-side options
- Open Settings → About device and tap Build number repeatedly until Developer options are enabled. Labels vary by ColorOS release.
- Open Settings → System settings → Developer options (the location can differ), enable USB debugging and, if present and available, OEM unlocking.
- Connect the phone, unlock its screen and accept the computer’s RSA authorization prompt.
OEM unlocking is permission for the bootloader to consider an unlock; it does not mean the bootloader is already unlocked.

fastboot flashing unlock
Confirm the warning on the phone. Android specifies that this command should be denied when the device’s unlock-ability flag is not enabled and that physical confirmation is required. If the command is rejected, unsupported or requests an authorization service, stop and follow the exact model-and-region procedure. Magisk cannot bypass an ununlockable bootloader.
Find the correct stock image
The image must correspond to the build installed on the phone, or to the exact build you plan to install. Depending on the boot architecture, Magisk may require one of these:
Recommended Free Tools
| Possible target | When it may apply |
|---|---|
boot.img |
Devices whose kernel and ramdisk are in the boot partition. |
init_boot.img |
Devices that place the generic ramdisk in a separate init_boot partition. |
recovery.img |
Devices without a boot ramdisk that use recovery-mode installation. |
vendor_boot.img |
Supported layouts where the vendor boot partition carries the required boot components. |
Oppo firmware packages are not uniform. An image may be inside a payload, a partition-image set or a vendor-specific container rather than exposed as a standalone file. Extract it using instructions for that exact package and preserve the untouched original. Magisk’s boot architecture documentation is at magisk/docs/boot.md; its image handling is implemented in boot_patch.sh and util_functions.sh.
Patch the image with Magisk
- Install the official Magisk APK on the same Oppo phone that will receive the image.
- Copy the matching stock image to the phone.
- Open Magisk, tap Install in the Magisk card, then choose Select and Patch a File.
- Select the required
boot.img,init_boot.img,recovery.imgorvendor_boot.img. - Wait for patching to finish. Keep the original image unchanged.
- Copy the generated file back to the computer. The filename is random, for example:
adb pull /sdcard/Download/magisk_patched_[random_strings].img
Never patch on one phone and flash to another, and do not substitute an image from a different build unless a device-specific method explicitly supports it.
Flash the patched image without TWRP
First confirm the partition name and active slot. The following are examples, not universal commands:

fastboot getvar current-slot
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
fastboot flash init_boot magisk_patched.img
fastboot flash recovery magisk_patched.img
fastboot flash vendor_boot magisk_patched.img
On some A/B phones the partition may require a suffix:
fastboot flash boot_a magisk_patched.img
fastboot flash boot_b magisk_patched.img
Do not blindly flash both slots. The correct target depends on the device and Magisk’s instructions. Flash only the partition and slot confirmed for your phone, then reboot:
fastboot reboot
If Android starts and Magisk reports that additional setup is required, open Magisk and allow its environment-fix step to complete.
Do not disable verification by default
Some devices may require matching stock vbmeta.img, but this is not a universal prerequisite. Magisk documents this optional example:
fastboot flash vbmeta --disable-verity --disable-verification vbmeta.img
Use it only when the exact device method requires it, and only with the matching build’s stock vbmeta.img. It can wipe data, weakens verified-boot protections and may complicate updates.

Verify root
adb shell
su
When su is run, Magisk should display a permission prompt on the phone. A successful result means the Magisk daemon can grant a root shell; it does not mean every module works or that security-sensitive apps will accept the device.
Troubleshooting and recovery
Fastboot shows no device
- Try another known-good cable and USB port.
- Confirm Platform-Tools is current and install the appropriate Windows driver if required.
- Verify that the phone is in true bootloader/Fastboot mode, not recovery or a vendor download mode.
- Check whether that Oppo model exposes Fastboot over USB at all.
Do not treat Qualcomm EDL or random service drivers as a universal fallback.
The unlock command fails
Record the exact error. “Unlock not permitted,” “command unsupported,” “critical partitions protected,” “OEM authorization required” and “wrong mode” indicate different eligibility or procedure problems. A failed unlock is not something Magisk can fix.
Invalid image or partition not found
Likely causes include the wrong image type, wrong partition name or slot, an image extracted incorrectly, firmware intended for a non-Fastboot flashing mode, or an unsupported vendor layout. Do not guess between boot, init_boot, vendor_boot and recovery.
The phone boot-loops after flashing
- Return to Fastboot.
- Flash the untouched stock image to the same confirmed partition, for example:
fastboot flash boot stock_boot.img
Use the corresponding init_boot, recovery or vendor_boot command when applicable, then reboot. If it still fails, restore the complete matching official firmware through Oppo’s supported update or recovery route, or a model-specific service procedure.

Do not relock until every relevant partition is official, matching and fully tested.
Magisk patches successfully but Android will not start
Check for a different build, wrong partition or slot, an already modified source image, omitted device-specific vbmeta handling, transfer corruption or an unsupported boot chain. Magisk’s patching scripts distinguish several image structures and reject some previously modified images.
Recovery-only root behavior
On a device with no boot ramdisk, Magisk may use recovery. In that design, root is enabled only when you boot through the documented recovery-key sequence; a normal boot can start Android without Magisk. See Magisk’s boot documentation.
OTA updates fail
Modified read-only partitions can prevent an OTA from applying. Before updating, follow Magisk’s current OTA procedure at magisk/docs/ota.md, restore what the device requires, install the update, then patch the new build’s image. Never flash an old patched image onto a new build.
Return the phone to stock
- Where possible, use Magisk’s uninstall option from the installed Magisk app.
- Otherwise flash the untouched image that matches the installed build to the same partition and slot.
- If necessary, restore the complete official firmware using Oppo’s supported recovery or update process.
- Boot and verify the phone is fully stock before considering a relock.
Relocking a device while any modified or mismatched partition remains installed can cause an unrecoverable boot failure.
When this method does not apply
Some Oppo phones use vendor download, recovery or service modes rather than a conventional Fastboot flashing path. MediaTek and other vendor-specific procedures are highly model-dependent and carry greater brick risk. If the phone has no usable Fastboot interface or no legitimate unlock path for its exact region, this guide cannot turn it into a supported Magisk target.
