If an Ubuntu upgrade leaves Wi-Fi, graphics, or another device unusable, there usually is no general supported command to undo the completed upgrade on ordinary Ubuntu Desktop or Server. First protect your files, then decide whether you need to diagnose a kernel or driver problem, restore files, recover a complete pre-upgrade system image, or install an older Ubuntu release. Those are different recovery jobs.
What “roll back” can—and cannot—mean
On conventional Ubuntu Desktop and Server installations, the available guidance does not establish a universal in-place procedure that returns a completed release upgrade to its exact earlier state. An older-kernel boot, a file restore, a full-system image restore, and a fresh installation have different effects:

| Option | What it can do | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Boot an older installed kernel | Test whether the issue may be associated with a kernel or driver change. | Return the Ubuntu release, packages, and settings to their previous state. |
| Restore a file backup | Recover files included in that backup. | Recreate the complete former operating system unless the backup is a full-system image. |
| Restore a pre-upgrade system image or snapshot | Return the system to the captured state, subject to the image or snapshot method. | Recover changes made after that capture unless they were separately saved. |
| Install an older Ubuntu release | Put that release on the machine as a fresh installation. | Downgrade the existing installation in place; installation can overwrite data. |
Ubuntu’s backup and restore guidance describes restoring files from a backup, not a universal full-system rollback. For a release change, follow the applicable upgrade notes and upgrade guidance; do not try to downgrade by changing repository codenames.

Before changing anything, establish what still works and what recovery goal matters most. A hardware failure immediately after an upgrade may be related to the upgrade, but timing alone does not prove the cause.

- Record the Ubuntu release you upgraded from and to, if known.
- Note whether the computer reaches GRUB, the login screen, or neither.
- Identify the affected device and whether the problem began immediately after the upgrade.
- Decide whether you need one device working again or the complete former Ubuntu installation restored.
- Check whether you have a file backup or a full-system image made before the upgrade; they are not interchangeable.
If GRUB appears, try an older kernel as a diagnostic
If the boot menu is available and an older kernel remains installed, selecting it can help determine whether the problem is tied to a kernel or driver change. Ubuntu’s GRUB documentation describes older kernels under “Previous Linux versions” when those entries are available. Menu contents vary, and older kernels may have been removed.
- Restart the computer and open the GRUB menu. The key or timing needed to reveal it varies by system.
- Choose “Advanced options for Ubuntu,” if shown, then select an older kernel under “Previous Linux versions.”
- Check whether the affected hardware works after booting.
If the device works with the older kernel, that is useful evidence of a kernel-related problem to investigate for your release and hardware. It is not a release rollback: the upgraded Ubuntu release and its other packages remain installed.
Protect personal files before repair or reinstall
Do not start a potentially destructive repair or installation until important files are safely copied and verified. If Ubuntu still boots, use your existing backup method where possible. The Ubuntu restore guide says backups can be restored from a device such as an external hard drive, USB drive, or another computer on the network, and recommends using the same backup application that created them.

If the installed system will not boot, a live environment may let you access the disk and copy readable files. Ubuntu’s live recovery guidance covers recovering data from a live session. Confirm that the important files open from the backup destination; a backup that has not been checked may not be usable when needed.
Choose recovery based on the outcome you need
Only one device stopped working
If the rest of Ubuntu works and your priority is restoring one device, investigate the release-specific kernel, driver, or firmware issue for that hardware. An older-kernel test can help narrow the cause, but the exact fix depends on the Ubuntu release and device; the available guidance does not establish one repair command for all hardware failures.
You need the complete former system state
Use a full-system image or snapshot made before the upgrade, if you have one and know how to restore it. A file backup alone generally restores the files it contains, not the former release and complete system configuration.

You have no full-system image and want the earlier release
After preserving personal data, a fresh installation of the desired release may be the practical option. It is not an in-place downgrade and can overwrite data, so follow the installer instructions for that release and verify the backup before proceeding. Avoid trying to force a downgrade by substituting older repository versions: Ubuntu’s upgrade guidance is based on supported release paths, not an improvised package-repository reversal.

Canonical’s Ubuntu Server upgrade guidance recommends backing up data before an upgrade and identifies do-release-upgrade as the recommended process for Server and cloud images. It also notes that third-party software can be a common source of upgrade problems. Ubuntu’s release guidance stresses using supported upgrade paths and checking the relevant release notes.
For current context, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS was released on 23 April 2026. Canonical’s 26.04 LTS release notes state that users on some older releases, including 22.04 LTS and 25.04, must first move to an eligible intermediate release before upgrading to 26.04. Check the notes for your starting release rather than assuming every older installation can upgrade directly.
Ubuntu Core is a separate case
Ubuntu Core has distinct recovery modes, including recovery, reinstall, and factory reset, with different effects on data. Those procedures are for Ubuntu Core and should not be applied to ordinary Ubuntu Desktop or Server. Consult Canonical’s Ubuntu Core recovery modes overview and recovery mode instructions only if the device is actually running Ubuntu Core.
