If you have a supported Google Pixel, you can leave Android Beta in one of two ways: wait for and install the stable release, then opt out during Google’s limited no-wipe window, or flash a public build now and reset the phone. Flashing erases user data, so back up first. These steps are for eligible Pixel devices—not a universal Android downgrade method.
Choose the route that fits your timing
| Route | When it works | Data impact | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Install stable, then opt out | After the stable public release reaches the Pixel, while Google’s limited opt-out window is available and before installing another beta update. | Google says opting out in this window can avoid a data wipe. | Wait for the stable update and follow the option presented in the current Android Beta program page or device update prompt. |
| Flash a public build | When you need to return to a public build without waiting for the stable-release opt-out opportunity. | Requires a full reset and removes all user data. | Android Flash Tool or manual flashing of the exact device’s factory image; both require careful device-specific steps. |
The no-wipe option is conditional, not a general promise that opting out will preserve data. Google says the opportunity follows installation of a stable release and ends if you apply the next beta update. Check the current Android Beta program page and the update prompt on your phone, since release timing and available prompts change. Google’s Android 16 QPR2 guidance describes that cycle as four stable public releases: the platform release followed by three Quarterly Platform Releases. That count is specific to Android 16 QPR2, not a guarantee for later cycles.

Can you leave the Android beta without losing data?
Potentially, if your supported Pixel has received and installed the stable public release and you opt out before applying another beta update. Google describes this as a limited window. Use the opt-out option shown for your device and verify the current instructions before proceeding; do not install a later beta update first if your goal is to preserve data.
If that window is not available or you cannot wait, returning to a public build by flashing is the other documented Pixel route, but it erases the phone. Google’s Android 16 factory-image instructions warn: “Flashing to a beta build from a production build—or going back to a production build from a beta build—requires a full device reset that removes all user data on the device.”

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).

How to return to stable Android on a Pixel
Option 1: Install the stable release and opt out
- Confirm that the phone is a supported Pixel and check the Android Beta program page and the phone’s system update prompt for the stable-release status and available opt-out instructions.
- Install the stable public update offered to the device.
- Use the available option to opt out of future beta updates during Google’s limited window. Do this before installing another beta update.
- Read the confirmation and any on-screen instructions before continuing. Prompts and timing can vary by release cycle.
This path is an exit from future beta updates, not a license to install an arbitrary older build. Follow the current device prompt rather than trying to select a different image.
Option 2: Flash a public build with Android Flash Tool
Google documents Android Flash Tool as a guided, browser-based route for supported Pixel devices. It connects the phone to a computer over USB and requires the device to be unlocked and USB debugging enabled in Developer options. A compatible USB data cable is needed for the connection; this is not required for the stable OTA opt-out route.

- Back up data you want to keep. Flashing from beta to a public build resets the device.
- Check Google’s current factory-image instructions and use the Android Flash Tool linked there for a supported Pixel.
- Unlock the device and enable USB debugging in Developer options, then connect it to the computer over USB.
- Follow the tool’s on-screen steps for the exact device. Do not choose a build for a different Pixel model or improvise the process.
Option 3: Flash a factory image manually
Manual flashing is intended for users who need more control over the test environment. It is not simply the same as opting out of beta updates, and Google’s factory-image route resets data. Select the image that matches the exact Pixel model and follow Google’s device-specific flashing instructions; do not substitute a file or commands intended for another device.
- Back up the phone before beginning.
- Use Google’s device-specific factory-image listing and instructions to identify the correct image and process for the device.
- Follow those instructions exactly, including any device-specific steps. Stop if the listed model or build does not match the phone.
Check device eligibility before choosing
The opt-out and image guidance discussed here is for supported Google Pixel devices. Google’s Android 16 QPR2 list includes Pixel 6 and newer listed models, Pixel Tablet, and Pixel Fold family devices; eligibility changes with release cycles. Check the current list and the relevant build listing rather than assuming an older or newer Pixel is eligible.

These instructions do not establish a rollback procedure for Samsung, Motorola, or other Android manufacturers. Their update and downgrade procedures can differ. If you have a non-Pixel phone, identify its exact model and use that manufacturer’s current instructions instead of applying Pixel flashing steps.

Flashing a beta build can enroll a Pixel for continuing beta over-the-air updates. To stop receiving future beta updates, you need to unenroll through the available program option. This is why installing a beta image and leaving the beta program are separate actions.
