If Windows 11’s Settings > System > Recovery > Go back option is available, use it to return to the Windows version you had before the upgrade. Microsoft says the option is available for 10 days in most cases. It keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and changes made to Settings. Back up important files before you start.
Check whether you can go back
Open Settings > System > Recovery and look for Go back. If it is available, select it and follow the on-screen prompts. Microsoft’s usual availability window is 10 days after an upgrade, not a guarantee that every PC will have the option.

The rollback also depends on the previous installation files still being present. Microsoft lists the contents of windows.old and $windows.~bt as requirements. If you used a USB drive to upgrade, have that drive available; Microsoft also says to remove user accounts added after the upgrade before going back. Apps added, removed, or updated since upgrading might not be available or work properly after the return.

Back up files, then run Go back
- Back up important files. Microsoft recommends a backup before any recovery process. You can use OneDrive or an external USB flash drive. This is a precaution even though Go back is described as keeping personal files.
- Open the recovery page. Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
- Choose Go back. If the control is available, select it and follow the prompts to return to the previous Windows version.
- Review what will change. The process keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and changes made to Settings. Complete the return only after you understand those effects.
What each recovery option does to your files
“Will I lose my files?” depends on which recovery option you choose. Go back is specifically for returning to the previous Windows version; other options may repair the current installation or restore the PC to an earlier state.
| Option | Returns to previous Windows version? | Effect on personal files | Effect on apps, drivers, and settings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Go back | Yes, when available | Keeps personal files | Removes apps and drivers installed after upgrading and changes made to Settings |
| Uninstall a recent update | No | Files are not affected | Removes changes from the selected update; Microsoft says apps are not affected |
| System Restore | No | Personal files are not affected | Rolls back system files and settings; recent apps, drivers, updates, or settings may be affected |
| Point-in-time restore | No | Returns the PC, including personal files, to the state of a recent restore point; changes made after that point are lost | Returns apps and settings to the restore-point state |
| Fix problems using Windows Update | No | Preserves personal files | Reinstalls the same/current Windows version while preserving apps and settings |
| Reset this PC | No | “Keep my files” preserves personal files; other reset choices can remove them | “Keep my files” removes apps and settings |
| Reinstall from recovery or installation media | Not necessarily | Effects depend on the method; a clean installation can remove personal files | Effects depend on the method; a clean installation can remove apps and settings |
If Go back is missing
First identify what caused the problem: a recent update, the Windows version upgrade, a particular app or driver, or broader system damage. Pick a recovery option for that issue rather than treating every option as a way to downgrade.

- You need to undo system-file or settings changes: consider System Restore if a restore point exists. It does not affect personal files, but can undo recent apps, drivers, updates, or settings.
- Windows needs repair, but you want to keep the current version: Fix problems using Windows Update reinstalls the same/current Windows version and preserves apps, files, and settings. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet while it runs. This repairs the current version; it does not roll back the upgrade.
- You are considering Reset this PC or a reinstall: check the specific keep/remove choices and back up first. A clean installation can remove personal files, apps, and settings.
Microsoft recommends trying less disruptive recovery choices before Reset this PC. For most recovery options launched from Windows Recovery Environment, an encrypted device requires its BitLocker recovery key. If this is a work- or school-managed PC, contact your IT administrator before changing its installation.
Windows.old can help retrieve files, but it is not rollback
Windows.old has a separate use in one documented situation: if you chose Nothing in the upgrade’s “Choose what to keep” step, personal files were not migrated to the new installation but may temporarily remain in that folder. Microsoft says those files are retained for 10 days after the upgrade, after which most content is automatically deleted. Another installation, upgrade, refresh, or reset can delete the old contents sooner. This retrieval method does not work after a fresh installation from media that formats the drive or after Reset this PC.
