If the result conflicts with a mailed notice, map listing, text, or social post, contact the local election office using contact information from an official government website. Polling-place notification rules and voting arrangements vary by jurisdiction; there is no single practical notification procedure established nationwide.
How to verify your polling place
- Start with your state election office. Use the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s state and territory voter resources to reach the official state election website. Follow its link to the relevant local election office when needed. The EAC identifies local election officials as the best source for practical registration and voting information (EAC guidance).
- Look up your location for the right election and address. Use the official polling-place lookup, entering your current address. Confirm the election date, voting hours, and any other instructions. USAGov also directs voters to look up their polling place at Voting on Election Day.
- Check what kind of voting location applies. Some states assign a voter to a specific polling place; others have vote centers where eligible voters in the jurisdiction may cast a ballot. Early-voting locations may differ from Election Day sites. A nearby location is not necessarily valid for your address or election, so check local rules in the official lookup or with election officials (EAC voter FAQs).
- Resolve conflicting information directly. If the lookup does not answer your question, or a notice gives a different address, contact the local election office through the official state or local government site. Ask which location is valid for your address and election and whether the office has issued a correction or late change. This is a practical way to resolve conflicting information; it is not a universal legal procedure.
Treat a text, social-media post, search result, map listing, or third-party message as a lead rather than confirmation unless it points to a current election-office source. The official-source guidance does not establish that every jurisdiction uses every communication channel.

What a polling-place change notice may tell you
Notification methods and required notice details depend on state and local rules. Do not assume that every change must be announced by mail, telephone, text, email, social media, or signs nationwide. When reviewing a notice, check whether it identifies the election and provides the exact location information required locally. Then confirm the address through the official lookup or election office.

A 2025 Texas Secretary of State advisory addresses counties using the countywide polling-place program for specified 2025 elections. It says participating counties must submit a communication plan explaining how voters will be notified of the change and new locations. It also describes election notices that identify Election Day polling places and provide detailed location information, including a street address and any applicable suite, room, or building name. These are requirements in the Texas program context described by the advisory, not a nationwide template. The advisory notes that its information may change because of legislation (Texas Secretary of State advisory).

The same advisory says the Texas countywide model requires a computerized voter registration list capable of instantly verifying that a voter has not already voted at another polling place. That is a requirement of this state program, not a description of every vote-center system.
Is there a national rule for announcing polling-place changes?
The reviewed federal guidance points voters to state and local election officials rather than establishing one nationwide practical notification procedure. Election administration is decentralized, and local rules determine which channels are used, what a notice must include, and how late changes are handled. For a particular election, the state or local election office is the appropriate source for the applicable information.

H.R. 7182, titled the “Minimum Notification Requirements for Voters Affected by Polling Place Changes Act,” is marked “Introduced in House” in the bill text. It is a proposal, not proof of a current nationwide mandate. The introduced text proposes individual notice at least seven days before a federal election for a registered voter assigned a different location, by mail and telephone and, if available, text and email. It also proposes general notices on a state or jurisdiction website, social media if available, and signs at the former polling place. For late assignments, it proposes reasonable efforts to let a voter who appears at the former location vote that day. These are provisions in the introduced bill, not requirements established as currently effective by the bill text itself (H.R. 7182 text).
Why checking the official location matters
The Election Assistance Commission’s 2024 Election Administration and Voting Survey report, released June 30, 2025, reported 95,815 physical polling places for the 2024 general election. It separately reported 87,736 polling places for Election Day and 13,163 for in-person early voting; those categories may overlap within the overall total. The EAC cautions that previous reports underreported polling-place figures, so the total should not be used to claim a year-over-year rise or fall. It also does not show how many locations changed or how many voters were affected (2024 EAVS Comprehensive Report).

Those figures provide election context, not a measure of how often polling places change or how reliably voters receive change notices (EAC report release).
